The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

So you think the queen, at 90odd with her husband of 90 odd should have a full tv film and sound crew troop through their home? Okaaaaay

Biscuit

Would you let a group of strangers into your or your parents house now?

daisychain01 · 25/03/2020 15:29

@Lifeisabeach09 interesting that you equate the ability to contribute meaningfully to supporting your country solely to money in the bank.

IpeartreeI · 25/03/2020 15:29

Harry and Meghan are good value for money because their goings on are quite entertaining 😄

The rest of the Royals are rather dull and they're all of no use whatsoever in a crisis.

DCITennison · 25/03/2020 15:29

You don’t sound like someone who’s morale would be boosted by a message from the royals, op.

My morale wouldn’t be boosted either, what difference would it make to anything?

Whingeing about the lack of a royal address is really just another way to express resentment (justified or not).

“I pay for you, therefore I own you, now perform!” That’s basically it, isn’t it? Which is pretty unpleasant really.

Personally I’d rather they just concentrate on keeping themselves safe , the same hope I have for everyone else.

Lindy2 · 25/03/2020 15:30

I think the Queen has done a huge amount over her many years. If now, in her 90s, she needs to step back a bit and protect her and her frail husband's health, then that's ok with me.

Are you doing anything to help anyone OP or just whinging on about others?

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 15:31

Why don't they buy ventilators a la Elon Musk? Or donate food from their estates (Duchy of Cornwall), and buy testing kits for the NHS staff they so praise?
I agree with you, OP.

minniemoll · 25/03/2020 15:33

Would you be happy for a film crew to visit your 93 year old mother at home at the moment? Somehow I doubt it.

And I doubt that HM could manage a selfie type video with her iPhone....

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 15:33

@daisychain01, I do in this instance because they don't have anything else to offer.

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 15:34

@minniemoll
I highly doubt the Queen is isolated from her staff.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 15:37

@Lifeisabeach09

Fantastic ideas! Hadn't thought of those, fair play. Ways they can really help without exposing themselves to the virus. Really good suggestions.

Can anyone argue with those..?

@Lindy2 see my previous post about what I am doing. I wont ask you back as it's not relevant to the thread

Dyrne · 25/03/2020 15:37

Funny you should mention that, Lifeisabeach09 ... the Royal family have been delivering supplies to some hospitals...

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 15:38

@Dyrne, if so that's great! Source?

Eastie77 · 25/03/2020 15:40

I'm no fan of the RF but no idea why you
think it would be useful for the Queen or any other family member to issue a "morale boosting message". Whose morale would be boosted? Only a minority of people in this country have any time for the RF and if you are going through the stress of a loved one in hospital or losing your job then what is a prepared statement from the Queen supposed to do for you? She's almost a hundred years old and possibly self isolating due to Charles coming down with CV. He obviously can't deliver a speech and it seems unlikely William would want to so thankfully we don't have to hear from them and any nonsensical "we're all in this together" type crap.

june2007 · 25/03/2020 15:41

So Charles and Camilla should self isolating, so should the queen, Members have been delivering supplies as well. But hay lets not get in the way of a good moan.

PicsInRed · 25/03/2020 15:42

It was plainly obvious that PC was ill due to his sudden disappearance from both view and reporting, and PW being designated standin for the Queen, rather than PC.

The fact that the Queen released only a written message also gives me pause for her status.

All this "remains in good health" slogan rinse and repeat business gives me further pause.

Ted27 · 25/03/2020 15:43

Euegenie and her husband and Sarah Ferguson have apparently been delivering care packages to NHS staff in London and getting criticised.

Whatever they do I suspect they can't win. I'm not a Royalist but many people are and quite frankly the death of the Queen, Philip or anyone in the direct line of succession is the last thing we need.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 15:44

Ok forget the video messages etc for a minute. But what about beach's suggestions above? Can any of you argue with those..? Heres a few more (just thought of them off the top of my head, acknowledge they might need tweaking):

  1. PC can waive/freeze all rent on the Duchy
  2. Younger royals without health problems can join NHS volunteers
  3. They can auction a painting/jewels to raise money for ventilators
  4. They can pledge to open all their stately homes and gardens once the pandemic is over to raise money for relief funds, help local businesses etc

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 15:45

If Charles pulls through, he would be in great position to make a speech based on his experience, and survival, of corona. It might give people hope.
As for the queen making speeches, even just an upload from an IPad that was aired on the evening news, would be welcomed by a lot of the elderly.

SunshineCake · 25/03/2020 15:45

Oh good. Another pointless thread complaining about the royal family.

PicsInRed · 25/03/2020 15:45

If now, in her 90s, she needs to step back a bit and protect her and her frail husband's health, then that's ok with me.

They don't normally live together. Prince Philip lives with his long term partner Penny Mountbatten and has done for years. I know, I know. But the Queen and PP are actually separate households.

alloutoffucks · 25/03/2020 15:46

Yes I agree that this is needed.

Rinoachicken · 25/03/2020 15:46

She did send out a lengthy message last week, they read it live on the BBC news.

Or do you want a new message every day? Hmm

widdioisright · 25/03/2020 15:46

What on earth do you expect the Queen to do,she is 93!!!!

She helped out in the Second World War,when she was young.

She should not be recording any messages at this present time,if she did the Mumsnet Police would complain about that as well!

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 15:47

@SunshineCake are you able to refute any of beach's or my ideas above?

OP posts:
snowyforest · 25/03/2020 15:47

I'm not a royalist, far from it and I really think they are on their way out as they should be but Charles is an old man, the Queen is an old lady so they are doing what their told. Quite frankly they are irrelevent at present, as they have been for a very long time.
