I need one loo roll a day

catflapuk · 21/03/2020 00:30

So I have been keeping track of it. I need one a day (if I'm working from home) and more when on my period.

My friend lives in a houseshare with two other people. She says they have 16 rolls at home, which is more than enough. She says that will last them a long time. How?

OP posts:
Onesailwait · 21/03/2020 02:04

Wow thats a lot. We use about 1 roll every e days or so days 2 adults 3 kids. Mind you we have a septic system that is 30yrs old & we cant afford to replace it so my kids know they have to use it really sparingly. We just got a bidet attachment and we will fit it this weekend.

ArriettyJones · 21/03/2020 02:06

Drip dry?! One for a wee, two for a poo?

Is this some kind of MN COVID nadir?

Stop telling people how to wipe their own bottoms: Confused Shock

Metabolisms, health conditions, anatomies and toilet paper quality vary hugely.

So maybe we could - erm - stop this bonkers conversation?

notangelinajolie · 21/03/2020 02:13

OP I think you have a problem.

lborgia · 21/03/2020 02:16

We have been told that the “average“ family in australia needs 10 rolls a week. When I posted this, my friends all said “what the hell are they using it for?”

Maybe they’re all using it like you?

Whatever, it’s ridiculous.

lborgia · 21/03/2020 02:17

...x-post - Gerbils notwithstanding.

KatesMott · 21/03/2020 02:19

@ PotholeParadise no bits of toilet roll left on hands- not with the thick 4ply I use. Think not using towels stemmed from when I first started wearing contacts and occasionally fluff or fibre from towels would be transferred onto the lens when inserting after washing and drying my hands and it just became a ‘thing’ from there. Silly really I guess but just habit now. I’ve never really thought about it much until this thread, although it is a long running source of eye rolling and wonderment from my DP.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 21/03/2020 02:25

I wasn't far off you OP,
I start trying to make it last longer and it's fine, I was using too much and bunching and rolling it around my hand .

Womanistaken
The drill:
2 squares for a wee. That's it.
3 squares on repeat (approx x3-4) for a poo until clean.
Paper neatly folded, no bunching allowed.

This is a really good guide.

EBearhug · 21/03/2020 02:27

I live alone and I get through about a roll a week. Consumption does go up in period week, particularly as I'm in my 40s. I do sometimes use it to blow my nose or for wiping mud off my shoe, but it's still about a role a week.

If you wee a lot and drink a lot, have you been tested for diabetes?

HoppingPavlova · 21/03/2020 02:33

The only possible way an adult can use 1 roll a day is if they have IBS or food poisoning or something OR are using 1 ply and having to use a lot more due to needing an excessive amount to scrunch due to the thinness. Wee’ing excessively does not require a lot of toilet paper.

Maybe change to 3-ply, use it in the normal manner and you may get 3 days out of it unless you have IBS or maybe 2 days if you have your period.

We have several adult sized people in our household and would average 6/week and that’s some with periods. Maybe an extra roll or so if someone has a dodgy tummy. As far as I am aware everyone’s bits and bobs are clean. Should add that’s also with the guys using it to wipe after a wee. Given the current situation I am trying to enforce shaking only for them but not really something you can enforce .........

lemontreebird · 21/03/2020 02:40

2 sheets for a wee? 2?!

MissyJane2 · 21/03/2020 02:40

I have sometimes have irritable bowel syndrome and have to go more often and when I do I need more toilet roll.

But 16 rolls should last about 2 weeks but then I live on my own so there's only me.

StoppinBy · 21/03/2020 02:42

I am at home all day with my almost 3 year old. Daughter is here outside of school hours and husband gets home round 4:30 each day. We use maybe 1 toilet roll every 3-4 days. We don't ration to 1 sheet per wee lol, more likely 4 sheets a wee and whatever you need for a poo.

Are you eating TP OP? It's not good for your system lol.

1forAll74 · 21/03/2020 03:04

You are using too much toilet paper, I suppose it's okay under the circumstances that were, but now, you may not be able to get many toilet rolls.. If Boris, or any Supermarket, declare that you can only have one toilet roll a month very soon, what are you going to do then.? you have to prepare for some great changes. You will have to use newspaper. like the daily mail haha, but not magazines, like take a break etc, as they are two thick and shiny.

AbsentmindedWoman · 21/03/2020 03:13

Crawls off to die of minty dribbly shame

Grin

I do think 1 a day sounds wasteful.

Can't understand people using it to blow their nose or dry their hands or eyes. That's not hygienic to me - ridiculous but makes me squeamish.

PotholeParadise · 21/03/2020 03:40

16 rolls should last about 2 weeks

What the hell are you all doing with it?!

We've used less than that in the last three weeks for a family of 4-5 people!

Mary1935 · 21/03/2020 03:51

This is funny.😀
OP buy some baby wipes and use them to ensure it’s clean.
My sons sings a song “wipe and wipe till brown leaves town!!”
I used to scrunch a lot but I’m limiting it more.

CornflakeBreath · 21/03/2020 03:53

Threads like this make me wonder if I have an enormous fanny. A square or two for a pee? Only on Mumsnet Grin

PotholeParadise · 21/03/2020 03:55

Don't flush the wipes!

ExhaustedFlamingo · 21/03/2020 04:09

^"I always buy the cheapest loo roll available. Because of the loo roll shortage we have found ourselves with some super thick quilted stuff.

I must say it’s a bit of a revelation. Far less is needed though, maybe not even half as much as I would normally use."^

@TinklyLittleLaugh - I discovered this a while back and it's a game-changer, isn't it?! Normally, the quilted stuff doesn't cost much more especially if you look out for offers/deals and you use WAY less because it's much thicker. I buy so much less toilet paper now (partner has IBS so we use a fair bit).

Having said all of that, I cannot begin to get my head around using a roll per day. I also, like a PP above, didn't realise I had such strong views on how much toilet roll is appropriate to use daily 😅😅

PieceOfMaria · 21/03/2020 04:35

Modify, I repeat NOBODY needs one loo roll per day. Whatever your medical condition, even if you diarrhoea or IBS, your perception of need is skewed.

PieceOfMaria · 21/03/2020 04:35

Nobody, not modify!

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/03/2020 04:39

My 11 yo dd uses a lot of loo roll in comparison to me. She also washes her bum after a poo. Perhaps you could buy a few flannels and use a bit less loo roll that way.

I scrunch for wees and fold for poos. I hate the quilted stuff btw. Seems so wasteful. We get through for more than the normal stuff with dd.

Drying your hands on loo roll. I couldn’t think of anything worse. Ewww. I use hand towels changed daily...

squeekums · 21/03/2020 04:57

Drip dry and use 2 sheets max for a wee

Drip dry? Ahh no.
2 sheets? That's no where near a comfortable amount.

We about a roll a day between 3, sometimes more.
Never counted how many sheets but I make sure I've scrunched a comfortable wad if you will
I can imagine counting sheets lol, pedantic much?

HannaYeah · 21/03/2020 05:04

I can’t wrap my head around hand drying with it. It’s going to keep me awake.

Bookworm83 · 21/03/2020 05:15

I use one roll a day too, but only because I'm heavily pregnant and pee all the bloody time.
Normally I wouldn't use this much.
