I need one loo roll a day

So I have been keeping track of it. I need one a day (if I'm working from home) and more when on my period.

My friend lives in a houseshare with two other people. She says they have 16 rolls at home, which is more than enough. She says that will last them a long time. How?

The drill:2 squares for a wee. That's it.
3 squares on repeat (approx x3-4) for a poo until clean.

That's not enough. Not for a poo.
I use far more than that nearly a whole roll.

Peanut55 · 21/03/2020 05:32

There are normally 320 sheets on a roll.

I have 3 toilets in my house, me and DH and 6mo baby. DH tends to use en suite, I use one bathroom, and the downstairs loo is for guests. I use a lot less than DH does and told him to begin thinking about how much he uses.

I use a loo roll every 3/4 days. More if on my P. He uses one every 2/3 days.

I don't bunch, I fold. Have kidney problems so sometimes I am peeing like a heavily pregnant woman but still don't use masses.
One a day seems alot to me.

Peanut55 · 21/03/2020 05:36

We use 3ply if that makes a difference.

2 for a wee is plenty. Wipe, fold, wipe, fold, wipe, fold flush.

Jigsawpuzzle · 21/03/2020 06:01

Use kitchen roll for a wee and periods BIN never flush. Save the toilet paper 🧻 for other business.
I have a Bidet and shower at home.
My DD who is an International teacher currently lives in Thailand. They have spray gun attachments and you don’t flush any paper. She previously lived in Beijing where we used wipes and toilet paper then in to pedal bin.
Unfortunately we have to put on hold any trips and Skype regular as their schools 🏫 are now closed. She has 2 girls and hand washing a regular routine before this.

Jenasaurus · 21/03/2020 06:05

Ive never really thought about this until now, but as an IBS sufferer and also now I have no gall bladder I can go about 12 times a day which made things awkward at work, now I am WFH I have realised how quickly I have to change the roll.

okiedokieme · 21/03/2020 06:13

We get through around 8 a week, sometimes more. Lots of adults, mostly female.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/03/2020 06:14

We use one a day here, 3 adults. I think it must be Dd and have ranted at her a bit about this. But she has got serious bowel issues and says it’s because of her constant diahorrhea so don’t feel I can continue ranting.

endofacentury · 21/03/2020 06:25

I use one a day also, but then I have ibs so 🤷🏼‍♀️ can't understand how 1 a week could last a couple?

HoffiCoffi13 · 21/03/2020 06:29

We use a roll a day between 5 (well 4 as 1 is in nappies), and I thought that was a lot!

DoubleAction · 21/03/2020 06:33

We use around 2 per week for a family.of 4 adults nut we are.all out during the week (with no weird hangups about pooing at work!)

Ridiculous as it sounds I am worried about how our supplies will stretch once everyone's at home especially with two young men in the house

NuclearWinter · 21/03/2020 06:40

• In an average household, the average roll of toilet paper lasts approximately five days.
• Consumers use approximately 8 - 9 sheets of paper per toilet usee_.

slipperywhensparticus · 21/03/2020 06:40

I bought flannels and a lidded bucket just incase

Toomboom · 21/03/2020 06:41

Try living in a household with two people with bowel conditions, then you realise just how much loo roll you can go through :)
We use on average one loo roll a day. Not panic buying, just hoping there is some there when we need to replace.

Icecreamdiva · 21/03/2020 06:42

My mind is boggling at using a loo roll a day!

After reading a thread about reusable loo roll on here earlier this year I bought these to use for weeing. Very comfortable. They go in the hot wash with sheets and towels so not adding to laundry costs. I would prefer not to use them for pooing as I don’t want buckets of bleach and napisan hanging around but it’s reassuring to know that’s an option if shortages continue!

I was in shock at the one a day until I remembered ex h who used to wrap it round and round his hand, wipe once then start again.

I however use a few sheets, wipe them fold and wipe again. If it's messy wetting the paper a bit can help clean quicker

And for periods you can't beat moon cups

AmelieTaylor · 21/03/2020 06:48

We use Andrex original. I have no idea how many ply it us (and cba to go and look) but I think it’s 3 ply?! I dislike anything too thick or anything too thin. Cheap loo roll is false economy.

I have no idea how many rolls I/we use pw or per wee/poo. I’m using more than I usually would becayse the loo roll holder hadn’t been put back up since the bathroom was tiled (large tiles and despite knowing how to do it, I’m still nervous of cracking the tile!) so I tend to wrap it around my hand, rather than
Just take a few sheets.

Before CV I had been buying quite a bit as Tesco had it on special & I was getting some with each shop. No panic buying for CV

I have started being a bit more ‘aware’ of not wasting it, but no way is 2 sheets enough for a wee these days. And until you’re peri menopausal you might not appreciate the amount you might need for a period. Until there’s an actual nationwide shortage I’m not using a jug/cloth/whatever. The mess I make I might as well shower!

To the person using kitchen towel - only in an absolute emergency and never flushed.

The raw material is the same as toilet paper

Using TP to dry your hands at home is mad though.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 21/03/2020 06:52

We get through loads! At least 2 rolls a day - more sometimes. 10 people. DH has ibs and can go 7+ times a day and eldest DS (17) has colitis and can be the same. We are definitely going to run out in the not too distant future. My plan is to cut up towels into wipes and wash them if necessary.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 21/03/2020 06:54

This is why I love Mumsnet. Where else can you get these kind of insights!!! Some of you on here are in for a ride awakening. You're going to HAVE to start being more conservative with your loo roll use cos you can't simply pick up 20 packs of it now, so you'd better get to grips with rationing. Some of you are just so dam decadent!!!

LittleLittleLittle · 21/03/2020 06:55

I realised I was using too much loo paper when I have heavy periods so I use toddler wipes then. They go into the bin with my used sanitary products. After decades of having heavy periods I have limits on what washing I'm prepared to do.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/03/2020 06:56

I saw a tiktok video yesterday about some cultures not using loo roll and using a shower type attachment instead.

We have one of those old 1970s rubber shower head attachments that push on the bath taps. I use it for the dog. I now have visions of us all having to stand in the bath and hose off after a poo! 😂😂

Pteuropa · 21/03/2020 07:00

Small jug of soapy water and a towel will do the job.

Pteuropa · 21/03/2020 07:02

Loo roll is actually not very effective at cleaning you if you’re having a heavy period/bowel trouble. Sit over the side of the bath and shower your bits down, towel or dry flannel to dry and then bit of talc to finish off. Fresh as a daisy!

EggysMom · 21/03/2020 07:05

I have no idea how much we get through but I'm going to keep track now that I've read this thread Grin New roll went on this morning, only DH and I use it (DS still in pads). DH did comment last week that he now finds himself thinking about how much he uses and is trying to cut down.

In general I use 2 or 3 sheets for a wee, looking to consistently use 2 sheets by remembering to do the 'shameless shuffle' to shake excess. (This was a tip I picked up from an early episode of Shameless when the pub toilet had no paper.) For a poo, it's multiples of 3 sheets until clean, so generally 6 sheets unless I've had a curry! I've no idea how much DH uses but I've persuaded him not to give the ends of rolls to our son to play with, as they generally have 2 or 3 sheets still attached - in my mind, I can use those!

We don't have 'other uses' for toilet paper as our toilet is separate to our bathroom, the temptation isn't there. Noses are blown on kitchen towel.

Figgygal · 21/03/2020 07:07

That is absolutely ridiculous One roll a day you must have an undisclosed medical condition because otherwise that’s just not possible
