Anyone else bombarded by people saying we are going full lockdown at the weekend?
I can't work out if fake news or not!

OP posts:

"London is facing a lockdown, possibly before the weekend, as Boris Johnson prepares sweeping new measures — including school closures — to tackle the rapid spread of the coronavirus, the FT is reporting.

A decision on whether to lock down London — similar to the shutdown in force in cities such as Paris and Brussels — would be based on the latest advice presented to the Cobra emergency committee, which has its latest meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Restrictions could include the closure of public transport, with pharmacies or supermarkets among the only outlets to remain open."

(FT article they mention is behind a paywall, but can be read on their app for free if you register).

everythingbackbutyou · 18/03/2020 21:51

Why would we lock down one of the best albums of all time?

MagisCapulus · 18/03/2020 21:51

an article not behind a paywall www.ft.com/content/e8c98d1c-6926-11ea-a3c9-1fe6fedcca75

OublietteBravo · 18/03/2020 21:51

Logically it should happen simultaneously with the schools closing - to stop everyone travelling and spreading the virus around. Possibly 24 hours earlier in London.

daffodilsandblossom · 18/03/2020 21:53

I reckon it will be announced tomorrow or Thursday. Everyday this week there has been something announced

  • Monday: 12 weeks self-isolation of elderly and vulnerable
  • Tuesday: business/financial stuff
  • Wednesday: school closures
  • Thursday: ???
  • Friday: ???
Eckhart · 18/03/2020 21:53

Can anybody who isn't just guessing post a link?

IrisAtwood · 18/03/2020 21:53

Now I am a bit freaked out. A close member of my family is quite senior in NHS England. They hardly ever ring but have just rung me to see how we are and asked me to ring them later in the week to let them know that we are OK.

Windyone · 18/03/2020 21:55

@IrisAtwood. Can you call them back and ask if they have officially been told about a lockdown

MrsXx4 · 18/03/2020 21:56

@housepurchaseanger I’ve seen the same photo as I think you are talking about.....on fb 🙄

LimitIsUp · 18/03/2020 21:56

Being on a lockdown as far as i am concerned. Gets it all done and dusted so much quicker

IrisAtwood · 18/03/2020 21:56

@BlueChangling To be honest, I can’t tell where or when that photo was taken. So I’m hoping that it isn’t a sign of things to come.

I have watched far too many pandemic, zombie, apocalypse movies! Wish I’d stuck to romcoms!

Daffie19 · 18/03/2020 21:57

I know someone in the fire service who's seen an email warning then. London lockdown Friday, rest of the country 48 hours later.
It's. Gonna happen.

MagisCapulus · 18/03/2020 21:58

@Eckhart I literally just posted TWO links to the financial times. Quite a reputable newspaper last I heard.

Roussette · 18/03/2020 21:58

It's all PR. Boris wants something to announce every day.

IrisAtwood · 18/03/2020 21:59

@Windyone I asked what they thought might be coming next and how things might pan out, but they gave a very political reply of ‘Well, it’s hard to know. We’re discovering new things everyday.’

Goldencurtain · 18/03/2020 21:59

For countries on lockdown have food businesses been able to continue deliveries?

Anotheruser02 · 18/03/2020 21:59

To be honest, I can’t tell where or when that photo was taken. So I’m hoping that it isn’t a sign of things to come.

I'm guessing it's not local based on the side of the road they are driving.

Kungfupanda67 · 18/03/2020 22:00

Everyone knows someone high up in the military/NHS/government/police in times like this, and they all seem to know more than the rest of us.

Just to prove my own point, someone very close to me is pretty senior in the MoD and I’ve heard... absolutely bollocks all, and even if I had I wouldn’t be telling Mumsnet! The same as any genuine ‘I know someone high up in...’ person!

WhatDoIDooDIoDtahW · 18/03/2020 22:00

I think I’m being thick as thieves here but can someone explain how if we go into total lockdown and everyone has to isolate for 2 weeks... but we are allowed to mow essential trips to the shops... people working shops? Who and how is it decides who is going to be the cashier at Tesco? Who’s going to stock the shelves? Why has Mr XYZ got to go to work and serve people and open a shop while everyone else isolates for two weeks?

Who’s sacrificing being infected to open the co-op? Genuine question I just don’t understand

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 22:00

That photo is fake news.

  1. That’s not the English flag, it’s a medical symbol (the Red Cross).
  2. The British Army don’t operate those vehicles.
  3. That’s the wrong side of the road for the UK.

HermioneWeasley · 18/03/2020 22:01

In countries with lockdown supermarkets are still open and food supplies are still flowing.

There is no need to panic

KoalasandRabbit · 18/03/2020 22:01

Would expect a full lockdown this Saturday. I would imagine if it is just London will be whole country very shortly after as some Londoners will leave to escape lockdown. Just hoping can still get cat's renal cat food from Pets at Home, not in until Tuesday. Cat is hoping not and that only tuna is available. Grin

Justaboy · 18/03/2020 22:01

Well what good will it do as most of the population is in a melee or a scrummage at Tescos sharing the germs!?.

LizzieMacQueen · 18/03/2020 22:01

Is a Marks and Spencers Foodhall a supermarket?

TheGreatWave · 18/03/2020 22:02

I know it is all a bit 'my next door neighbour, sister's cleaner, dog walker knows' but a few colleagues have family members in the armed forces and they have been on 'standby' , something will happen, it is just a case of when.
