Lockdown Rumours

Anyone else bombarded by people saying we are going full lockdown at the weekend?
I can't work out if fake news or not!

@Helenj1977 do you work in the government? How close are you to the source of the information? Can you give us any more info?

lubeybooby · 18/03/2020 21:21

Don't worry. Even in countries on lockdown, people can still go out for shopping, medical care and pharmacies etc. And an hour a day for health/dog walking in open spaces.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 18/03/2020 21:21

There have been meetings at my trust about it.

And from what I have heard it won't be long. That's just logical looking at what other nations have done without the rumours etc.

I would say after the weekend.

Straycatstrut · 18/03/2020 21:22

My mid 60's parents will not stay inside. I hate the idea of them being forced to but I'd much rather that then they catch it Sad - and at least they have each other for company. My Grandma is 90 and on her own. I haven't a clue what will happen to her if my mum & sisters cannot visit her and make sure she's okay.

People will not stop gathering in pubs/gyms until they are forced either.

I do worry so much for people's mental health though, inc my own. Being so isolated is really damaging - believe me, I'm a shadow of who I was.

RhymingRabbit3 · 18/03/2020 21:23

@Straycatstrut
In countries where lockdown is in place, people are still able to deliver packages and check on elderly relatives. Or could you suggest that your grandma moves in with your mum or sister for the time being to keep her from being too isolated?

Derbygerbil · 18/03/2020 21:25

If they don’t, at the very least, lock down London by the weekend I’d be surprised and very concerned.

If they don’t, we’re fucked.... and we’ll be in a far worse position than Italy. If people think we can wait another week or two before this happens then they’re deluded.

Look how quickly things have ramped up. This time last week we were all being told to wash our hands, Liverpool played Athletico Madrid in a full stadium, the Cheltenham festival was in full swing, and we had eight deaths....

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/03/2020 21:26

I read in the Guardian today that it was (I paraphrase) “not planned within the next few days”, which I took to mean it would come after the weekend. That was either BJ or NS - I’m in Scotland - speaking.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 18/03/2020 21:26

It all happened fairly quickly here in France. They announced school closures on Thursday night, the Friday being their last day.
At 7:30 on Saturday evening they announced all non essential shops and all restaurants, bars cafes were to close at midnight that night.
Then on Monday we were told that as of midday Tuesday were on total confinement for a minimum of two weeks.

We are allowed out for essential trips to the supermarket and pharmacy and we can walk the dog quickly in very close proximity to the house.
When we leave we have to take a form with us incase we stopped by the police or army.

All elective surgeries and medical appointments have been cancelled.

Derbygerbil · 18/03/2020 21:27

I think that would be way too harsh to go straight to the military. It would scare people and cause panic. I think they’ll start with just the police.

Yes, it will be civil enforcement at first... they’ll only call in the military if the police can’t cope.

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 21:27

Even IF the army is deployed on the streets they aren’t going to be shooting people. It’s not Northern Ireland in 1972. They MAY help the police if there’s a lockdown. I live on a military base so I am used to showing a pass to go home and being guarded by men with weapons! It’s really not scary. My whole life (home and work) is military. Perhaps I’m just used to it. I can see why it’s frightening if you have no knowledge or experience of the armed forces.

Bloomburger · 18/03/2020 21:28

I've heard it'll happen Friday evening after we've gotten over the shock of the kids being at home for the next 4 months!

Derbygerbil · 18/03/2020 21:29

I read in the Guardian today that it was (I paraphrase) “not planned within the next few days”, which I took to mean it would come after the weekend. That was either BJ or NS - I’m in Scotland - speaking.

It will be before the weekend... probably at Friday’s press conference, but quite possibly as early as tomorrow. Our numbers aren’t looking good. They won’t want a weekend full of people gathering together.

Daffie19 · 18/03/2020 21:32

I'm guessing in lockdown essential keyworkers. Are. Allowed to go to. Work. And home. Again?
Were half. Way through 14 day isolation, and. Running out of. Food.
No delivery slots available . 0

taptonaria27 · 18/03/2020 21:33

@briochebriochebrioche are you allowed to go to work if you can't work from home?

Deelish75 · 18/03/2020 21:33

I think we'll be in lockdown by Monday. I'm hoping they lockdown the whole country rather than just London, it will stop the selfish idiots leaving and spreading it to other parts of the country where medical care isn't as good.

Hippywannabe · 18/03/2020 21:34

But how will that work with schools, first of all they are closed, next they are open for key worker children (but the list of key workers isn't ready yet), then we will probably have to open over Easter, then it will be lockdown.

liberoncolours · 18/03/2020 21:34

Why would you think it’s a military lockdown?! That’s a bit OTT for something that can be managed by police I think it is to do with manpower, there is a greater presence on the streets in france, making sure that people know what they are supposed to be doing and why and issuing fines if they don't.

housepurchaseanger · 18/03/2020 21:35

Someone just sent me a picture of lots of army trucks on the outskirts of London - wouldn't have believed it otherwise

StuckBetweenDarknessAndLight · 18/03/2020 21:35

I think London will be by the weekend with the rest of the country to follow. But London first. I'm as prepared as I can be but worried about my mental health as I suffer from anxiety and depression. And I don't live with my boyfriend, I won't be able to see him Sad

Helenj1977 · 18/03/2020 21:36

The bill will go through tomorrow, announced Friday, actioned Saturday along with the vulnerable.

They can't give much notice. They don't want people to flee before it starts.

theflushedzebra · 18/03/2020 21:36

We should have closed the schools and locked down 2 weeks ago. The writing was on the wall - Europe was doing this - we waited. I think this was probably a mistake. Many, many more people will have contracted this virus than needed to.

Helenj1977 · 18/03/2020 21:37

This is too late. Way too late.

liberoncolours · 18/03/2020 21:37

@StuckBetweenDarknessAndLight in france we were given half a day's notice of "no non essential travel" so that people could go to the place they wanted to be, I guess, so if you and your bf wanted to be together can you arrange that?!

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 21:37

Helenj1977 and housepurchaseanger - what are your sources?

Can we see the photo of the army near London please?

TwelveIslands · 18/03/2020 21:38

They can't tell us too early. It will create mass panic. They'll do it gradually.

That's where the rumours will have come from. Getting us used to the idea so that when they announce it, it won't come as a massive shock. We'll be somewhat prepared for it to happen.
