Lockdown Rumours

LanguageAsAFlower · 18/03/2020 20:53

Anyone else bombarded by people saying we are going full lockdown at the weekend?
I can't work out if fake news or not!

@Helenj1977 unfortunately he's not a reasonable person and won't agree to that. It's court ordered contact and he's of the impression it's all just a big fuss about nothing.

Helenj1977 · 19/03/2020 07:08

Surely he still can't believe that?

midnightstar66 · 19/03/2020 07:12

Last night he was adamant he wouldn't have to stop work at any time throughout this 'because he's self employed and no one can stop him going to work' he works on building sites and didn't seem to comprehend that these would be closed. Typical narcissist who lives in whatever world he wants to believe as it suits him at the time

skodadoda · 19/03/2020 07:15

Most of the measures taken have been preceded by ‘rumours’ generated in order to soften the blow when it happens.

SoupDragon · 19/03/2020 07:32

But what if the virus gets in there with you - we all know what happened to Jeff Goldblum in The Fly

There's always someone who has to spoil it...

😂

alloutoffucks · 19/03/2020 07:33

@midnightstar66 He is going to get a shock then when it is enforced.

I am another one who doesn't live with her partner, we are in the same city and around a 30 minute walk from each other. Both of us live alone so I not sure one of us temporarily moving in with the other would work, as certainly in my case being away from home for more than a certain number of days in a year invalidates my contents insurance. If we knew it was just going to be 2 weeks that would be fine, but if it could be closer to 2 months and I presumably would be banned from going back to my flat at all, then we are going to have to stay put in our respective homes.

As I said I live alone, and from yesterday am probably mostly working at home too. Yesterday I felt a bit like I was in solitary confinement in prison. I am an introvert but I do need some social interaction and to be able to spend time with the people I love. I was in tears yesterday - partly about this whole surreal feeling situation and the number of deaths which could result from it, but also at the prospect of no human touch or interaction in person apart from with supermarket cashiers for an unknown length of time. And amazing as those cashiers are, still doing their job right now, they aren't my partner or my friends and there won't be any hugs or comforting touches from them.

Fartintheloft · 19/03/2020 09:40

What happens if you live in a rural area? How are they going to get people to adhere to the lockdown in tiny villages?

You would think people would be sensible, but nope! And there are cases near by, so it’s not like it isn’t reaching us. Will they send army/police to remote areas?

ThanksForAllTheFish · 19/03/2020 09:48

I watched Nicola Sturgeon speech yesterday. At the end she took questions. One of them was about lockdown. Her answer was basically some parts of the U.K. might go into lockdown but others might not and it will depend on outbreaks in individual areas.

What I took from that is London will most likely go into lockdown sooner rather than later. London has the largest population and the highest number of cases. The rest of us won’t for the moment but might if the cases get higher in our areas. I’m in a fairly large city in Scotland so I suspect we will be in lockdown at some point.
I’ve also spotted the Navy driving to the large police station headquarters earlier this week (loads of them). Others have reports of the army being spotted out and about in the area. They are obviously getting prepared for the inevitable lockdown that will happen in the coming weeks.

Helenj1977 · 19/03/2020 12:31

The bill has been passed... Maybe I will be right.

PlomBear · 19/03/2020 12:34

Downing Street have said there isn’t going to be a lockdown.

Marieo · 19/03/2020 12:35

They aren't just preparing for potential lockdown, they are preparing to provide logistical support, and manpower if needed. I know most people think the military just go to war or whatever, but they do plenty in peacetime of value aside from patrol and enforce order.

PlomBear · 19/03/2020 12:35

Zero prospect’ of London lockdown
There is "zero prospect of any restrictions being placed on travelling in and out of London”, the UK government has said.

A spokesperson said there were also “no plans to use military personnel for public order during the coronavirus pandemic”.

Asked to comment on the suggestion only one person would be allowed to leave a house at a time, Downing Street said this was "not true”, according to BBC political correspondent Chris Mason.

It comes after speculation London could face a lockdown by the weekend.

Discobar · 19/03/2020 13:03

Won't be a full lockdown, instead enforced closing of all business, shops, bars, pubs along with massively reduced public transport.

Only supermarkets/chemists will be open.

So not a lockdown, but also no point going anywhere.

In my opinion..

PlomBear · 19/03/2020 13:15

Discobar- probably.

I’m unsure why so many people think the military will be patrolling and there will be road blocks.

“Lockdown” sounds so dramatic.

UYScuti · 19/03/2020 13:21

Lockdown also goes hand-in-hand with 'prison'

UYScuti · 19/03/2020 13:23

Imo Boris thinks people will rebel against enforced lockdown leading to a risk of civil disobedience, he thinks it's better if we voluntarily imprison ourselves

Glaceon · 19/03/2020 13:49

People here are laughing about it and think that even if the rest of the uk goes into full lockdown it wont effect our town.

PlomBear · 19/03/2020 13:52

124,000 police.
146,500 members of the armed forces.

Population of 66 million!

tryingtoprep · 19/03/2020 13:53

@Discobar that sounds like the best solution. Keeps essential services going and enables emergency travel, for instance a woman fleeing domestic abuse.

It needs to be UK wide - and asap, or pointless. Waiting until it gets worse is beyond stupid. The while point of any kind of lockdown is to prevent things worsening.

JustAnotherMumTho · 19/03/2020 14:22

@midnightstar66
This is my big fear too, I'm not far away from DS's dad and in theory would have plenty of time to collect him if we were warned. Problem is he sounds much like your ex and would probably make it difficult or refuse to give him back if lockdown was to interrupt his contact.

I'm hours away from London and part of me is hoping that rumours about there first and the rest of us after the weekend are true, even though I agree with others that it would make sense to lock down all at once!

tinytemper66 · 19/03/2020 14:35

What about caring for someone who is unable to look after themselves fully for lockdown. Can't give too many details but I have a relative who cannot live at home and is usually supported every other day by family for shopping , showeinf and shaving plus laundry and cleaning the flat. Could the main'carer' bowed to visit daily or every other day?

PlomBear · 19/03/2020 15:02

It’s all speculation. But we are not on lockdown. Let’s take it down a notch.

Nobody will force you (or your ex) to hand the children over at a time like this. Best to ignore the arrangement and keep them safe with you. You are acting appropriately, CLEARLY in their best interests. There's no way you'll be penalised for it later.

newnamenumber7 · 19/03/2020 16:31

(IANAL, but surely....?)
