"Amazon has temporarily suspended the shipment of all items from independent merchants to its warehouses that are not medical supplies or "high-demand" products. "

Only affecting third party sellers sending products TO Amazon warehouses, unless I'm reading this wrong?

Birdyfly · 17/03/2020 15:36

I have a family member who works in a supermarket and I'm so worried... She had a son who has asthma too. She obviously can't work from home but she is terrified :(

nellodee · 17/03/2020 15:36

I'm really concerned by them modelling this based on cases doubling every 5 days. Cases are doubling roughly every 4 days. Deaths are doubling every 3 days or so.

Is twatface on at 4pm?

MurrayTheMonk · 17/03/2020 15:44

Update-still no testing for service user.

LA found us some masks though!

And I've cobbled together a staff team as the county council issued a mysterious rehash of the advice to staff to self isolate. They don't need to now as long as they wear PPE.
So a few have agreed to come back in.

I think it's all being made up as we go along tbh...but as long as service is covered for now....

ClientQueen · 17/03/2020 15:46

I've been sent home with immediate effect to isolate for 12 weeks

Spiraeah · 17/03/2020 15:50

people will have to stop buying soon, surely?
First they said isolate for a couple of weeks so people bought a little extra food. Then they said four months so people bought more food. Now they’re saying 18 months so people are shitting a brick and buying all the food they can get their hands on. What else can anyone do to prepare or protect their family?

Rinoachicken · 17/03/2020 15:55

If a member of your household has to isolate for 12 weeks due to underlying health, does that include the rest of the household??

riotlady · 17/03/2020 15:56

I think I might start planting some veg tbh. Gives us something to do when DD is feeling better and could be useful if we do end up having food shortages in the next year

Youngatheart00 · 17/03/2020 15:57

@MurrayTheMonk please to hear the positive developments at your place

juneybean · 17/03/2020 15:57

Also interested in the answer to that @Rinoachicken a chap at work is wanting to isolate as his wife is pregnant.

PleaseStopCrying · 17/03/2020 15:58

To my knowledge they don't need to isolate too only if the household member shows symptoms of a cough or fever. I'm socially distancing for 12 weeks and my husband is still at work.

NeverSurrender · 17/03/2020 15:58

I've been out today for an essential medical apt with my dc and was really shocked at the amount of people going about their normal days - old and young. Everywhere I drove past just seemed as busy as it usually is.

InSomeKindOfWakingNightmare · 17/03/2020 15:59

People are just not getting it. I really despair, I really do

MurrayTheMonk · 17/03/2020 16:00

DD's school shut from tomorrow (they were at home anyway already as they are both feverish)

Quartz2208 · 17/03/2020 16:01

I imagine a combination of the amount of chemical warfare Sadaam Hussain used in the Iraq-Iran war and the other Gulf Wars plus the state of the prisons the Iranian death rate could be much higher and not necessarily the same as everyone else

AvocadoOwl · 17/03/2020 16:01

Just read this (account from a British GP who has recovered from the virus) and my ears pricked when she mentioned a odd metallic taste in her mouth afterwards. www.pulsetoday.co.uk/views/blogs/as-a-gp-whos-overcome-coronavirus-heres-what-i-want-you-to-know/20040354.article

Several weeks ago I was ill with a corona-like virus and I had this weird metallic taste thing!!! Lasted for days and was really odd, horrible!

Has anyone read anything else about a metallic taste? I feel like I'm quite keen to convince myself that I have already had it 😆

juneybean · 17/03/2020 16:01

I was pretty irritated with my dad yesterday he rang to ask me if I was taking my mum out for mothers day.... I wasn't, as generally don't, I usually just buy her something but when I said definitely wouldn't be doing so now, he seemed shocked and told me to behave that it's nothing. Is it a generational thing? Him and my mum just don't seem bothered?!

nellodee · 17/03/2020 16:05

From the Guardian:

Q: Does the modelling show that, if all goes according to plan, we will have enough ventilators?

Stevens says it will be easier to say once we have seen what impact the changes announced yesterday will have.

---------

But we KNOW that there is a 10 day between making a change, and seeing its effect. We have seen this explicitly in the data from Wuhan. The government are either ignorant, or lying. Or both, of course. If they wait 10 days between each separate measure, we are completely screwed.

woodpigeons · 17/03/2020 16:05

@defthand I read about Amazon. It was quite unclear but took it to mean they are only shipping their own items and not those ‘fulfilled by Amazon’.
It said they would send those already in transit to their warehouses but otherwise other sellers could open their own selling account.

TheGlaikitRambler · 17/03/2020 16:06

I think the Amazon thing is US anyway, not UK>

Twasbambam · 17/03/2020 16:09

Is Bojo still talking to the public today?

littledrummergirl · 17/03/2020 16:10

Riot lady, we are doing the same. Dh has built raised beds and I've got seeds ready to go in. I definitely haven't bought any for next year as well, I feel that with a potential shortage of people to plant and harvest, prices will rise. I also feel there will be more in the shops for others who don't have the space to grow their own.

defthand · 17/03/2020 16:11

@WhyNotMe40

At the height of their outbreak the Chinese in Wuhan made a serious effort to round up all suspected cases in the city and isolate and test them because their prior interventions had not been enough to suppress the virus (in more scientific terms — to get its R0 below 1).

This involved dispatching 1800 teams of 5+ people to temperature check all citizens. Anyone with mild symptoms and all of their contacts (even if asymptomatic) were isolated in quarantine centres (they were relocated to proper hospitals if they became seriously ill). You can read about their approach here:

drive.google.com/file/d/14tGJF9tdv4osPhY1-fswLcSlWZJ9zx45/view

So this is some of our best data for mild v severe confirmed case breakdowns, and there’s plenty of asymptomatic confirmed cases too, due to contact tracing. But the overall asymptomatic case ratio is still unknown. A retrospective Chinese study from a different city tested flu swabs and found no greater concentration of Covid-19 cases then they were confirming at large.

In general I think the Chinese are running with a stat of 30-40% of all cases are asymptomatic. This correlates with the Diamond Princess data (possibly our best data source as all onboard were tested).

@RedToothBrush

I also worry about Trump potentially using this as a way to 'punish' blue states with the emphasis on individual states to look after their own

Trump will not be punishing people because they live in a Blue State.

Take our state; its considered a 'Blue state' because the majority of our population is the west side, especially King County (Seattle) and they mostly vote Blue. In eastern half of Washington State, where I am at it's red. Our county is deep red. Trump will not punish us because of the Dem voters in King County.

Government and the private sector worked together to create a CV test and are also working together to find a cure or vaccine. There's is great cooperation here.
