The doctors telephoned one of the ladies I care for today and told her to self isolate. They were very polite and informative but she is worried as can be.

They will call you if you need to self isolate.

DD1 was let go by work this afternoon.

DD2 is a MH nurse and is about to start a crash course in ICU skills

Rinoachicken · 16/03/2020 22:09

Bump for those looking for the thread

BatSegundo · 16/03/2020 22:13

Fluffy from your post on the last thread, can you just take your kids out of school. I'm also in a vulnerable group and that's what I've done.

RedToothBrush · 16/03/2020 22:13

Jennifer Williams @jenwilliamsmen
Got no answer from anywhere in govt today re GPs finding themselves with PPE equipment that’s three years past its expiry. Also fears that lack of community testing is already leading hospitals to be overwhelmed
www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/gps-using-out-date-masks-17935754.amp
GPs 'using out of date masks' as health and social insiders raise concerns over lack of coronavirus testing - despite drive-through plans

I get that press offices are overwhelmed right now, so would be good to see some of these specifics raised at the press conferences. Agree with people saying health eds should be invited too - this needs command of detail.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 22:14

Things are getting scarrier every hour.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 16/03/2020 22:15

I've taken mine out already - my list of health problems is like bingo on that .gov list!

The school must be rushed off their feet, I didn't even get a call back

Quartz2208 · 16/03/2020 22:16

Yes and its hard to know now when it will end

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 22:19

Chris Mason - ':It’s expected that the government will announce significant additional financial measures tomorrow to help support the economy during the corona virus crisis. The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, is likely to appear at the daily Downing Street press briefing.'

Sam Coates - 'Summary of the Imperial College document about Covid-19. It suggests only two paths possible:
“Mitigation” that may still lead to healthcare overwhelmed and hundreds of thousands of deaths
“Suppression” which means lockdowns until a vaccine which cd be 18 month.'

Fluffyblanket287 · 16/03/2020 22:20

@BatSegundo as in deregister them?

The school is close to over subscribed and nervous about losing a place.

Just not sure what I am meant to be doing. Feel lost and no real guidance.

FranticBanana · 16/03/2020 22:20

Not sure if this is just local advice but in our school as of today all absences will now be authorised whatever the reason. So any of our parents choosing to keep children at home will be fine.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 22:23

My dad has voewed to go out even if him or one of us gets symtpoms and wont let us ask for others phone numbers ( We only have one other family member within walking distance.)

SpencerReidsMistress · 16/03/2020 22:23

I can confirm that people where i'm from are not avoiding pubs and clubs in fact a pub I know was busier than usual. Also was contacted by my doctors today to say that the Asthma nurse would ring me because they weren't accepting patients into the surgery. Nobody rung me back, so I rang them. I was told in a snippy voice that they hadn't finished ringing everyone (fair enough) however no call back :( I need asthma pumps.

lau1998 · 16/03/2020 22:26

Evening all, was wondering if I could get some opinions please. I've got no one to turn to. I'm 22 and have 2 children aged 3&4 and we only live approx 25 miles from my hometown and had to move away due to my situation at the time. I go to see family every weekend (usually) but haven't done now for a couple of months as often. However, we went down there about 8 days ago to see my 85 year old grandfather but didn't go this weekend due to the care home he is in being on 'lockdown' so I assumed they were being safe rather than sorry but I was informed today that a lady on the floor above him was confirmed with coronavirus. I am so concerned for him and the other residents, I'm trying to accept I am potentially not going to see him again but then trying so hard to think positive. But also, as we were there 8 days ago, should I put my children and myself into self isolation? None of us have any symptoms but I'm dreading the thought of maybe carrying the virus and passing it on if I've been in contact with someone who has it, I would not be able to live with myself if I was to potentially pass it on and put this dread onto someone.

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 22:27

Interestingly I've had an email from school this evening asking teachers to confirm whether we will be in tomorrow given the new advice. They're also sending out an email to parents tomorrow with plans for home learning and students who are self isolating.

I think there is possibly some anticipation the school will have to close due to lack of staff.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 22:30

What is the main reason does anyone think for not closing schools?

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 22:31

@lau1998 I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope your grandfather is OK - it's possible he will be, although it's worrying, this isn't a death sentence. Even if he does get ill, he has a higher chance of recovering than dying.

According to government advice, you don't need to self isolate. However if you were in close contact with someone who was/is ill, then I would isolate as much as possible. Do keep an eye out for any symptoms, no matter how mild!

Quartz2208 · 16/03/2020 22:32

lots of schools in our area are closing down partially, ours has stopped reception and year 1, the high school all but years 11 and 13. Not enough staff.

Max 4 days I reckon.

I just cant see how any country can survive an 18 month lockdown - all eyes will be on China I guess. The fear though of a second wave is there

TokyoSushi · 16/03/2020 22:33

Thank you!

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 22:33

Susanna Reid - 'I am currently well but due to the new advice today I will be self-isolating for two weeks due to symptoms in my household. Stay well everyone.'

danni0509 · 16/03/2020 22:35

Thanks for new thread

Calmonthesurfacebut · 16/03/2020 22:37

@lau1998.

I’m so sorry to hear about your Grand dad, I hope he will be okay. The fact he’s on a different floor, is a good thing.

If you haven’t had any symptoms after those 8 days, I would think that you’re fine. If you do get any going forward then you would all need to self isolate.

Fingers crossed for you. Maybe you could write him a note, or get the children to draw some pictures, might make you feel better and he’d probably love that Flowers

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 22:37

@MarshaBradyo I think closing schools is a very complicated decision - and closing schools on its own wouldn't be that effective.

I think the government doesn't want too many people taking time off work to look after their children until it can't be avoided. I think they also are aware that if schools are closed too early there will be a lot of pressure to reopen them - and reopening them at the wrong time would be disastrous.

I think there also needs to be an understanding that we are in this for the long haul - Arlene Foster talked about 16 weeks on Sunday. That is a really long time for schools to be closed for.

I don't know if it's on the government's radar but for some children that would be pretty disaterous in it's own way due to their home lives.

I do think it's something the government will have to do, but I can see why they are putting it off for as long as they can.

tryingtoprep · 16/03/2020 22:37

Why the sole focus on a vaccine? Several drugs have shown promise in treating it. Obviously a vaccine is the best option to avoid needing treatment, but in the meantime why would it necessarily be 18 months if a good drug that successfully treats it is found?
