To feel upset about holidays

MadameBee · 15/03/2020 22:29

I know this is really selfish and entitled but is anyone else feeling a bit devastated that their holiday is probably totally fucked this year?

Due to go to Spain (Benidorm!) in 8 weeks and it’s looking very unlikely.

😭😭😭😭

This year was the first year we could afford to take dc abroad. Have booked time off work after ds1 finishes his GCSEs and arranged to take ds2 out of school. Can't see it happening now.
Most gutted about missing a family weekend next month though and not being able to see my folks.

carlywurly · 17/03/2020 18:24

We are walking away from an imminent holiday to Thailand - can't believe anyone would happily go in the current circumstances- totally irresponsible and I totally get it's gutting to lose both the money and the holiday.

Watching the news tonight, and seeing all the people stuck all over the world, I would not enjoy a holiday knowing I might get stuck.

And not being checked at airports is far from reassuring - shows they aren't taking this nearly as seriously as they're making out.

Cam2020 · 17/03/2020 18:24

No, you're not BU. Lots of people are disappointed about a lot of things - we work hard for holidays and big events, but it is just one of those things, unfortunately.

BlackberryGin · 17/03/2020 18:28

I was looking forward to getting away on holiday after completing my radiotherapy treatment after my hysterectomy for endo cancer.
Thankfully I hadn't booked it yet so somehow it doesn't feel quite so bad Smile.
Even more thankfully, we have friends who have a holiday lodge in the Lake District and we are able to use it as often as we like, so I'm not complaining.

Not attending festivals and gigs or having a holiday abroad will save us quite a lot of money this year. Every cloud has a silver lining at times!
But no, you are definitely not being unreasonable to feel disappointed. I feel so sorry for those people who have saved for a trip of a lifetime as my friends have done, as the virus has completely ruined their 6-week trip around the Far East, Australia and New Zealand and they have found themselves quarantined. Ouch!

Uk holiday booked for Easter, forgot to renew annual travel insurance and the company who claim to be agents and given money to owners say I can't claim back as less than six weeks away.... bit pissed off i have lost the money but also in the high risk category for being very ill/dying when not if I catch it at the rate it's spreading

OJZJ · 17/03/2020 18:32

Ps on the plus side reckon as we do Disneyland paris several times a year I will save thousands.... although will need the money to live on if everything collapses

DIYBother · 17/03/2020 18:35

Of course YANBU - that’s so disappointing Flowers

Kayagh · 17/03/2020 18:37

It’s totally ok to feel bummed we are booked to go to Florida in June but my husband works in shipping they all had reliefs cancelled but I’m super proud of them all they are keeping the world going. Ie my husband carries lng which is due to be delivered U.K. ie heating the freaking power on and they will all but be forgotten when this is over

Iamclearlyamug · 17/03/2020 18:52

I'm gutted as I was meant to be flying out to visit my fiance next weekend with my daughter, would have been her first time seeing him in a year. Its not so much the cancelled trip, it's the not knowing when I/we will get to see him again - 1 month, 3 months, a year?! I don't know how to cope with the not knowing 😔😔

Longpinknails · 17/03/2020 20:00

My husband is 60 in early May....unfortunately I think it will now be a very quiet birthday for him.

leesylou · 17/03/2020 20:03

YANBU. I’m feeling upset for my DD11 who was supposed to be going to France at the end of April with school. It’s the one school trip all the kids look forward to from starting there in Yr5. It’s a Yr7 trip so she’s been talking about it for 2 years. Our summer holiday this year is to Norfolk end of July, so hopefully we can still go there.

wooo69 · 17/03/2020 20:03

We have a fortnight in Lanzarote booked for 14 April, the email with everything came this morning but I can’t even open it because I know we won’t be going. We haven’t been abroad for 16 years so it has meant new passports as well. We are disappointed but not devastated.
The world will take time to recover from this and tourism will be hit greatly, some economies will be financially unstable for many years but we will all get over not having our holiday

Gingercat86 · 17/03/2020 20:23

Was supposed to be going away at the end of March, holiday booked year in advance - Am so so sad about it but have tried to remain calm/positive but deep down am entirely gutted! Lots of factors as to whether we’ll actually be able to book it for another time. Am devastated mainly for the kids xx

FelicisNox · 17/03/2020 20:32

It's not selfish or entitled. You've every right to be upset. Try and get it moved to another point in the year so it's not a dead loss.

I'm fed up too. I've got tickets for Hamilton and Witness for next week and a family trip to London for a HP bus tour and meal in the half term and the whole lot has been lost. FFS!

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 17/03/2020 20:33

I have a big holiday booked for husbands 40th and even though it’s not till near the end of the year I just can’t see it happening and yes I am gutted! I would sacrifice my lovely holiday though if I could wake up tomorrow and this nightmare to be over...feels like I’m living in a scary movieConfused

nicky7654 · 17/03/2020 20:35

@MadameBee Totally understand. I am meant to be away beginning of May to Croatia with my sis and Floria in June for my 50th. Doubt if I go to either and am gutted. Have saved a long time for them and needed it after looking after my mum whom had cancer. Need a break and sounds like you do too xx

ilovechocolate07 · 17/03/2020 20:57

Major holiday has been cancelled and I'm not bothered. Yes, would live to have gone but better not to set off and stuck in hotel room/fighting for flight home. Also... friends family member who is very sick has to self isolate for 12 weeks and no contact with her new baby and a mother hundreds of miles away with lung disease. I've cried over this, not my holiday.

tiredofbeingalone123 · 17/03/2020 21:00

We lost a 14k Disney holiday but Disney have been brilliant in refunding and rebooking people

Thankssomuch · 17/03/2020 21:03

I totally agree OP. I am totally gutted about having to cancel our holiday in Cyprus in May. I was so looking forward, after an awful year at work.

I am holding on to hope for our August trip to Turkey. Really gutted about so many plans going wrong.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 17/03/2020 21:08

Im using old school carbolic soap. Screw the stupid handwash. Ebay. Carbolic soap (pink) antiseptic in it its the best. Your hands squeak they that clean 😉

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/03/2020 21:25

I didn't realise you can still get it, I can feel my hands cracking at the thought of it!

M2B19 · 17/03/2020 22:03

It’s perfectly acceptable to feel upset about these things and obviously disappointed, I feel the same. That’s not to say I don’t worry about my colleagues who work in the NHS, it’s patients and the impact this will have on everything else but that doesn’t mean to say you can’t be disappointed about this drastic new ‘lifestyle’.

amispeakingenglish · 18/03/2020 00:49

HollyGoLoudly1

The Chinese, who caused all this, could now make respirators for the rest of the world and make fast amounts of money.

Personally think they should be paying the rest of the world compensation as their disgusting eating habits caused all this. I also think we shouldn't be paying private hospitals for beds so Boris's friends can make more profit. He is not a leader at all, failing us and by not giving clear instructions re closures people, businesses can't claim on insurance, perhaps his rich mates are all Lloyds underwriters!!!

amispeakingenglish · 18/03/2020 00:51

Sorry Holiday thread, yes two of our family has lost holiday too. Very sad as both were special.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 18/03/2020 01:31

Hardly any business will be able to claim on Insurance, forced closure by the government for contagious disease is one of the get out clauses on insurance policies so Boris and co not forcing closure won’t have made much difference.
