To feel upset about holidays

MadameBee · 15/03/2020 22:29

I know this is really selfish and entitled but is anyone else feeling a bit devastated that their holiday is probably totally fucked this year?

Due to go to Spain (Benidorm!) in 8 weeks and it’s looking very unlikely.

😭😭😭😭

It's supposed to be our wedding day end of june and then going to kefalonia for a week immediately after. If course theres worse thi gs that could happen but if neither end up going ahead we will be devastated as weve worked so hard to pay for it, and after a few hard years this is supposed to be the start of better times

Furrydog7 · 16/03/2020 14:10

I am disappointed about my holiday. Yes there are bigger issues but i was looking forward to my holiday for most of last year and i feel as though i have got nothing to look forward to now.

Dieu · 16/03/2020 17:39

Due to take my kids to Rhodes in July. I'll be gutted if it doesn't go ahead, as I'd originally booked through Thomas Cook! (and as such already had to cancel before).

siriuslydog · 16/03/2020 17:52

We had the holiday of a lifetime booked for Easter hols, longhaul destination combined with a relative's wedding. DH had saved up leave and bought more and can't use later because it is the end of the leave year.

TBH I'm relieved now that the country has said we definitely can't go as it takes the decision out of our hands but still feeling sorry for ourselves and even more so for the wedding couple.

Obviously it is all for the best but I think we can all feel a bit sad about our cancelled plans.

LettyBriggs · 16/03/2020 17:57

I'm kind of pleased that I don't have to go on holiday any time soon. I love a holiday but hate booking them. Like the idea of taking holiday without actually going anywhere which under normal circumstances I would never do and find a complete waste of holiday entitlement. A bit #firstworldproblems, I realise.

VenusOfWillendorf · 16/03/2020 18:05

I was worried first, then disappointed when it was looking more and more likely that my Easter holiday wouldnt happen.
Got an email from the travel company this afternoon to say its cancelled and I have to say am relieved. The decision has been taken out of my hands; its a stressful time for travel.

isseywith4vampirecats · 16/03/2020 18:20

ours isn't just holidays we have booked Joe Satriani, Joe Bonnamassa, Whitesnake gigs all paid for, two motorbike rallies, had planned to tour Scotland on our motorbike in June, Naples at the end of September don't know if any of them will happen now and yes I am bitterly disappointed

Monkeynuts18 · 16/03/2020 21:30

It’s perfectly possible to understand that there are far more serious consequences of this virus than having to cancel a holiday - but also to feel very disappointed and sad about not being able to go on holiday/go to special events.

YANBU OP. It is really crap and really disappointing. We’ve had a really tough 12 months and were so looking forward to going to Greece in June.

Monkeynuts18 · 16/03/2020 21:36

Also, the bigger picture is something we really have very little control over. Trying not to obsess over it and focus on finding the positives is a perfectly healthy response. Certainly more so than rushing out to buy as much pasta and toilet roll as you can find and calling it “stockpiling”.

@catsmother I think you’re right. I’d care to bet quite a lot of loo roll that the self-righteous virtuous people on this thread are also stockpilers.

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/03/2020 21:41

I'm meant to be flying to London to see Family in April and going to Harry Potter Studio. It's all off now and I feel so disappointed about it. Nothing to look forward as no point booking anything. Ireland has more or less shut down so I am bored and over thinking things. I need something to look forward too.

Crazycrazylady · 16/03/2020 21:45

We were meant to fly to France last week on a skiing holiday as a family and I was supposed to be taking my elderly dad away to Germany at Easter as he is a big WW 2 history buff. Neither will be happening now and I'm really disappointed . We both work full time and life is very frantic and I really really value our family holidays so yes I'm gutted.
Having said that of course I'm really worried about the virus. My parents are in the 80s. My job may be in jeopardy with all the shutdowns
I can be disappointed about my holiday though and not be a terrible person as some people on here are implying 🙄🙄

OlaEliza · 16/03/2020 21:48

I’m in Ireland and we have schools, bars, restaurants, and all attractions closed. Gyms are closing, hairdressers too. It feels strange being outside -and the hardest thing is that we don’t know when it’ll end. We have plenty of things in our shops (tinned goods, toilet paper, hand soap, etc) so that’s one good thing anyway. The hardest thing is thinking about people who, if they contract the virus, will become seriously ill or perhaps die. It’s a horrible, unreal time and hard to stay positive. Our churches are closed too and I have to say I miss that more than I’d have believed possible!

We are in complete lockdown in Spain. The borders are being closed at midnight tonight apparently, to non-residents. Only essential services are open, so supermarkets, chemists, petrol stations, vets, the gas bottle places, banks. Hairdressers are open for people that can't wash their own hair but lots are choosing to close. Launderettes are open for people without washing machines. People are only allowed out to go to these or for a quick dog walk or to go to the bins (collection is from big communal bins rather than each dwelling) and then only one person can go, or one per dog. I think if you have a garden you aren't supposed to walk your dog in the street. The police are out stopping cars questioning people. The supermarkets are only letting so many people in at a time. There are queues outside to get in with markings on the floor to keep everyone 1.5m apart. Everyone is supposed to keep that distance apart inside. Someone is on the door using alcohol gel on the trolley handles and giving out gloves and squirts of gel. There is a limit on the number of each item you can buy. Stuff isn't selling out now and it's all very civilised. It seems much better than what I'm hearing about from the UK.

Fluffybutter · 16/03/2020 21:48

We always book lots of different things at the beginning of the year to give us something to look forward to but now means we have lots that face being cancelled .
Have an overnighter at a theme park for dd’s birthday next month.
Harry Potter tour in 2 weeks , British grand prix in July, a huge blow out holiday to Cali and Hawaii in August for dh’s 40th and a trip to berlin in October .
All probably up the swanny.
Very depressing on top of all the other doom and gloom ..
Really hope everyone stays safe though ,ultimately

Glitterb · 16/03/2020 21:53

I am due to fly to Greece in 9 weeks, it is looking unlikely we will be travelling as Jet2 has suspended all flights until atleast 1st May....

However I am currently sat by my mothers hospital bed whilst she is on life support. Quite frankly the holiday can take a running jump as I couldn’t care less.

pinkpanther84 · 16/03/2020 21:54

My April wedding and May honeymoon/holiday to Greece with the kids are off

MaryShelley1818 · 16/03/2020 21:55

I'm absolutely devastated that people are dying, that businesses are going to fold, that the economy is being decimated and that my wonderful parents are now in isolation and my mam was sobbing down the phone earlier that she isn't going to see my DS now for months as he's all that keeps her going.

However my holiday to Barcelona was cancelled this morning and it looks like our trip to Holland won't be going ahead in May either, and tbh I'm pretty upset about those too. YANBU x

midnightstar66 · 16/03/2020 22:13

I'm a little sad, our holiday for Easter was a brand new experience and won't be in a position to rebook, probably going to lose all the money which as a single parent on a low income is not great. It was also DC's Xmas present. We are all fine with it though - it is what it is! Definitely wouldnt use the word devastated, everyone is still alive.

BelfryBat · 16/03/2020 22:15

I think we are all going to be in such deep shit for the next few months that a few cancelled holidays will seem trivial.

PicnicPie · 17/03/2020 05:09

YANBU OP. Holidays are what we work hard for and look forward to. After many years we had finally booked to go to NYC as a couple and my mum agreed to look after our kids for us. I've always wanted to go and was so excited. But looks like it wont happen now. Hoping I can use deposit to rebook for a future date, but who knows...

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2020 05:19

The headlines will soon make this seem trivial.

ValleyoftheHorses · 17/03/2020 05:29

I am a bit sad about holidays but I do feel we need to man up.
Talking to over 70s about self isolating “it isn’t fair” he said. None of this is fucking fair. It’s shit. You’re 75. Man up!
I guess I feel the same about my holidays to myself. Self pity won’t help.

mininionsteve · 17/03/2020 06:01

While it's fine to be disappointed, devastated you are not. An entire industry lost their job last night, and becuase our illustrious leader refused to enforce it there will be no payout. It's not just the likes of Harry Potter that go dark but every venue in the land. So fine be upset that you aren't going on holiday or going to see a show, but think of the people that wake up this morning with no idea of when they are going to earn money again.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 17/03/2020 06:45

The mental health of pretty much the whole
Of Europe is taking a huge battering right now
Putting aside the illness , to have a whole continent experiencing stress , worry , job anxiety and such uncertainty is HUGE

Booboostwo · 17/03/2020 06:59

This is the kind of thread you look back on and think I can’t believe people were so short-sighted.

fuzzyduck1 · 17/03/2020 08:03

Just got to the first hotel in Thailand and all the scare mongering about 14 day quarantine is a load to tosh. They didn’t even check out temperature at the airport. Not saying the situation won’t change over here but the news is just out to sensationalise any news to instil fear.
