To feel upset about holidays

MadameBee · 15/03/2020 22:29

I know this is really selfish and entitled but is anyone else feeling a bit devastated that their holiday is probably totally fucked this year?

Due to go to Spain (Benidorm!) in 8 weeks and it’s looking very unlikely.

😭😭😭😭

@OJZJ Take care and stay isolated. The reason you are not going, is it because of your health? We are going to a 'Sleeps 12' on 3rd April with daughters, sons in law and grandchildren. Only from West Dorset to North Devon. I have paid for it because I like us getting together for longer than just an afternoon at a time, it has cost a lot!!! And I really need this holiday, booked 10 months ago. We usually just camp in a tent in August. My husband and I are early 60s with no apparent underlying health problems, so not that worried from health point of view but quite concerned that Boris may restrict travelling within England in next 2-3 weeks. Would that have been a concern of yours too?

amispeakingenglsh, it's hardly the fault of the Chinese people that this horrible virus originated there. Nobody knows why these things happen and it could not have been anticipated. They certainly did their best to contain it.

Apportioning blame is hardly helpful.

BunsyGirl · 18/03/2020 07:14

I was initially disappointed about not being able to go on our Easter holiday to Abu Dhabi. However, a lot of it was the thought of losing so much money at a time when we are going to be stretched due to my DH being self-employed. When I heard the change on FCO advice yesterday, I felt nothing but relief as it means we will get the money back.

justlliloleme · 18/03/2020 09:52

Yes I’m upset about mine, we were due to fly to Florida in May but have had to cancel & we’re going to lose about £2k. However i also have perspective & know we’re very fortunate compared to some so I’m not feeling too sorry for myself. They’ll be time for holidays when this is all over.

Iblinkedandiamold · 18/03/2020 10:09

I cant believe you're all losing so much money, it's unfair. My flight was cancelled, I didnt loose anything. I'd say I'll be getting a refund from Harry Potter too, but if I dont it's only about 50 euro.
Everything is going to shut down.
Here in Ireland everything is so quiet. Nobody is going out unless they have to. It's all so surreal.

ralfeesmum · 18/03/2020 11:14

Of course you're entitled to be deflated but (and this isn't taking away from your disappointment) how about the thousands of couples who planned their wedding for this Spring/Summer, paid all the deposits and now it's all up in the air?

They now have the slog of trying to wrangle back the deposits plus the emotional fall-out to cope with.

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 18/03/2020 11:22

Make it something to look forward to? Like a reward for reaching the goal of "back to normal" and an incentive to do everything you can to support this?

This is what we've done.

My daughter is with her father in ROI. I'm stuck in Switzerland. My sisters are both in the US and also can't get out. Mum is in the UK.

We've promised to each other that, once this is all over - we're going on a "women only" family holiday (sister 1 has daughters, too, sister 2 has no kids). We've not done this together since my eldest sibling moved out.

It helps keep us sane, knowing that we won't see each other for many months.

So, yes, it sucks not to be able to go - but use being able to as a bit of a carrot to fangle in front of yourself!

My travel insurance only covers if FCO advice is don't travel to that specific country at the time you leave. They've also announced anything booked from now on isn't covered, not that anyone sensible would be booking anything else. Atm my travel destination has no travel warning other than the general one so insurance won't pay out.

If the airline is still in business and cancels we should get our money back as we booked direct. Italy school trip again insurance is refusing claim as in June, we can pay the full amount and risk seeing if insurance company pay out but if no FCO travel advice in place they won't. Not even sure the insurer won't go bankrupt atm. I'm expecting to lose all the money on ours that's non-refundable which is £2.35k plus the £285 deposit on Italy school trip. If airline goes bankrupt there's another £1.5k we won't get back and insurance won't pay out for that as I didn't purchase the bankruptcy option. There's lots of people losing lots of money. Of course there are worse things than losing money. And just because someone has lost money doesn't mean they won't be badly affected by coronavirus too. Or that they can't worry about more than one thing.

winniestone37 · 18/03/2020 16:45

Gosh of course it’s ok to feel disappointed!! Blimey you’re human and holidays are lovely and the alternative isn’t that great. More sympathy for you then the women who was offended that her gp sent a text in capital letters ....

But it is their fault... it's what they eat, bats. etc. It came from bats. They boil dogs alive and eat live monkey brains, and are responsible for the killing of many rhinos for their horns plus other atrocities, among other things. It's not about political correctness which can at times be harmful when not acknowledging truths. Look at Trevor Phillips documentary.

Justsaynonow · 18/03/2020 23:29

I've been organizing the cancellation of a big trip that was to have started April 5. The covid19 cancellation policies have been evolving over the week.

Hotels.com is now offering full refunds even on non-refundable reservations (within set criteria), Airbnb is being reasonable, and the flights had been offering free date changes or a time limited voucher if I cancelled. The problem with vouchers is that they don't allow you to keep the credit balance if the new flight is cheaper, there's an admin fee/booking fee mentioned on KLM voucher info, and they're time limited.

Today, the EU clarified policy EC261 that if the airline cancels the flight, they must give the option of a refund in the same form as was paid - not just a voucher. So I'm going to hang onto my tickets as they'll most likely be cancelled - but it looks like it may only be flights originating in the EU (?). 3/4 of mine are.

midnightstar66 · 19/03/2020 07:36

So I'm going to hang onto my tickets as they'll most likely be cancelled

Yes same, my ferry for the same trip has been cancelled so I expect the flight to follow. The ferry email was vague in regards to this and was encouraging a rebook but I assume I am actually entitled to a refund. They just didn't want to encourage it?!

To feel upset about holidays
Mittens030869 · 19/03/2020 10:24

Our wedding anniversary is in April and we always celebrate it by arranging a sleepover for our DDs and go away to a hotel. This year, they were finally able to both go away to an Easter Christian camp, as they're both in Key Stage 2, so we were going to stay at a hotel with Tesco club card points and I'd been looking forward to it. Sad

But I have what's probably COVID-19, which I've spoken of elsewhere so I won't go into that now. But that means I don't have the energy to feel disappointment right now.

Chista · 19/03/2020 10:50

amispeakingenglish what a nasty thing to say. So because it broke out at a livestock market in China they somewhat deserve it. What's your answer for MERS and H1N1 then? Horribly ignorant comment.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/03/2020 13:25

DownstairsMixUp I've got a two week holiday booked for Cornwall at the beginning of May. I've got the chance to reschedule but I'm going to leave it as late as possible as we're still hoping to go. If we can't, I don't actually want to reschedule, I want to cancel as I won't get time later in the year. Not sure how that will work though!

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 13:27

Pink you won’t want to be going in May

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/03/2020 13:40

Well things can't carry on like this indefinitely, there'll be nothing left, so I'll hold out until the last minute in the hope I get a refund rather than be told I have to reschedule as I can't go later in the year.

Booboostwo · 19/03/2020 15:02

amispeakingenglish enjoy CJD, I am sure you are equally deserving of that.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 20:08

On another thread there are people
Claiming it’s completely irresponsible to go on holiday anywhere at all all this year. Regardless of the money lost.

carlywurly · 22/03/2020 07:07

I'd totally agree Roses. Even though I'm one of those who may lose a lot of money. I think this thread has moved on at pace since it was started. 2-3 weeks ago things looked very different and we were still planning to travel next week. Unimaginable now!

I keep wondering about the poster on here who did go to Thailand last weekend and whether they had to come straight home Confused

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 07:13

Or stuck. These people got stuck in Peru. Wouldn’t want to be without health care.

Woman in Bali dies with CV.

BBC

Not to mention FCO says don’t go

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 07:14

I think Roses is one of the few who still want to go.
