Boris is trying to kill off the old and infirm

"you will loose loved ones". Get over it. We are not taking any action to stop it. The old and vulnerable will die. 80% of us will catch coronavirus.

I do not like these messages. It's like he doesn't care about the elderly or vulnerable at all.

Is he trying to kill them off to make some savings in the NHS? It certainly feels like it.

AIBU to make this assumption?

Ok but do you not understand why they are saying that’s not the best approach right now?

JeepersC · 14/03/2020 09:33

If you were to compare governments to parenting, it's like the UK is that one parent who allows their children out to ramble and roam around the place unchecked, while every other parent has a good eye kept on their children. Who is most likely to come to harm? The delinquent Brit or the more controlled European?

Binterested · 14/03/2020 09:35

He’s not doing that because the expert advice he has received is that it wouldn’t help in the way we want it to. We have the advantage of being slightly behind Spain and Italy and can see there what’s working and what’s not.

I am a former civil servant. I have worked with ministers and prime ministers and hundreds of other civil servants. Not one of them is a murderous cynic who doesn’t care. They care just as much as you do. They are just having to make hard decisions for our long term good - they must not play to the gallery.

All these armchair epidemiologists who also happen to have diagnosed psychopathy in our Prime Minister are going to really get on my wick.

JeepersC · 14/03/2020 09:36

Do you disagree that allowing people to die means you're a cold hearted cunt? Please do offer an alternative descriptor! I love a good intelligent discussion.
Stupidity? You'd hardly call it intelligence - would you?
Embarrassed to announce having voted Tory? Goes without saying I'd have thought...

Binterested · 14/03/2020 09:38

This is not an intelligent discussion Jeepers.

MigginsMrs · 14/03/2020 09:39

Because he has to balance the well-being of the economy as well. No matter what people say about lives being more important, whilst true, changes that. For one thing, if the economy nosedives, who pays for the treatment required for those with the virus?

People’s common sense has completely gone to pot.

JeepersC · 14/03/2020 09:40

Posted on another thread that Boris studied Classics (I believe that's useful stuff like Greek and Latin?) whereas the Irish Taoiseach studied medicine, worked as a hospital doctor and then as a GP.
If you were a betting man, who would you put money on getting this right?

LuckyAmy1986 · 14/03/2020 09:40

Ok you are clearly too wound up right now to have the intelligent discussion though.

JeepersC · 14/03/2020 09:41

For one thing, if the economy nosedives, who pays for the treatment required for those with the virus?

Who is going to pay for the treatment anyway?

MigginsMrs · 14/03/2020 09:42

If only the PM had medical and scientific advisers eh.

Bathroom12345 · 14/03/2020 09:42

Jeepers - you sound a bit of a twit. So you want all schools to close down, lockdown like Italy. All flights grounded. Lock the door to the UK? Just like Trump?

Do we all stop working because we will need childcare or do we pass to GP who we do know are more at risk.

If you are working do you behave like this with people you work with?

MigginsMrs · 14/03/2020 09:42

Who is going to pay for the treatment anyway?

Well, people being able to remain in work and pay tax for the NHS would be a start.

JeepersC · 14/03/2020 09:44

Nobody is stopping anyone from working? Everyone is being encouraged to WFH.

MigginsMrs · 14/03/2020 09:44

@JeepersC you are being utterly ridiculous and making no sense. You need to get a grip. Have a look at what I read up on last night about malaria and the 400000 people it kills a year and maybe get this into perspective.

MigginsMrs · 14/03/2020 09:44

Yes, because “everyone” can wfh

JeepersC · 14/03/2020 09:45

If only the PM had medical and scientific advisers eh.

I'd say his Greek mythology proved useful in interpreting the data.

PlomBear · 14/03/2020 09:45

I used to be a nurse and we had to keep patients alive no matter what basically. I believe that pneumonia used to be called “the old man’s friend” because it hastened the death of the elderly and unwell.

I have performed CPR on people in their 90s. I have seen people in their 80s go for joint replacement surgery.

I’ve been shouted at by family members of patients in their 90s. “You let my dad/mum die!”

There seems to be an obsession with not talking about death and presuming we will all live forever.

Why on earth would I look up malaria?

WorriedAboutMom · 14/03/2020 09:46

Yes allow the virus to spread to the vulnerable for the "greater good" so we can achieve herd immunity. Which will result in more deaths.
Anyone who has a vulnerable family member should encourage them to self isolate from NOW IMO. There's FaceTime, WhatsApp Video or Phone to communicate. Make sure they've got enough essentials stocked up. The government isn't going to protect them, they are not a priority.
Also I don't understand why people think children will be congregating outside if schools close. It's not the 1980s. Most children I know would be more than happy staying inside with an IPad, Gaming, Telly, Facetiming friends and playing in the back garden.

jasjas1973 · 14/03/2020 09:47

We have the advantage of being slightly behind Spain and Italy and can see there what’s working and what’s not

If that were the case, we'd be following Korea,
what has the Govt done to "flatten the curve" ?

They wont even help care workers (and others) on zero hr contracts who may have to self isolate, esp given the new advice, this is outrageous! these workers aren't going to stay at home to live on air!!!
Johnson should treble SSP for the first 2 weeks and make it available to all who need it.
We should have the money, always being told we are the 5th richest country in the world.....

EsmeeMerlin · 14/03/2020 09:49

If the economy crashes, more people will he dying because of that than Coronavirus. You will have people die from hunger, poverty and from lack of services that have now had to cut even further back to try and claw back some money.

I don’t understand how many think we can lockdown for 2 months but then be ok after. Yes we may slow the rates of Coronavirus but we won’t eradicate it and now we are still dealing with Coronavirus with mass unemployment and poverty to also deal with surely. And we will then be dealing with more Coronavirus cases during winter.

Bathroom12345 · 14/03/2020 09:49

So you CANNOT work from home
Supermarket workers
Delivery drivers
Doctors and nurses
Care home workers
Police
Rubbish collectors
Driving instructors
Gardeners
Plumbers
Electricians
Heating Engineer
Painters
Builders
Dog walkers

Jeepers please calm down and take a break.

MigginsMrs · 14/03/2020 09:50

Why on earth would I look up malaria?

Yeah, why indeed. Just continue to be hysterical about this blip and ignore the fact that the fear we’ve had here for a couple of weeks about illness stealing our loved ones before their time takes place all day, every day, forever elsewhere in the world, despite the illness being curable and preventable. Clearly you think those lives matter less than those in this privileged society. Shame on you.
