Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

To be fair, I live in a democracy (Spain) and we are under quarantine and know exactly what we can and can't do and are complying. The problems in the UK is not democracy, it's that the government is doing FUCK ALL.

liberoncolours · 17/03/2020 11:21

the countries in europe taking measures are democracies.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2020 12:40

China took action that probably only they were capable of taking in terms of strict measures which were implemented quickly with clear guidelines.
Ironically, of course, the style of govt stopped this nightmare scenario from being addressed/prevented way back in December.

liberoncolours · 17/03/2020 13:52

I think that your first para might be wrong, actually, France is being pretty strict and the measures have been implemented speadily. The motivation for the public to adhere is also the hope that the measures will be effective. France and Spain are being strict too. Measures being enforced by the police/army where necessary. Can you give some examples of how was China stricter? Obviously only in early days in Europe.

AnneKipanki · 17/03/2020 14:11

I am sure you can research that yourself @liberoncolours . It might noty be prudent for someone to go into details if they live there .

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2020 14:14

Stricter as follows:

  • everyone with symptoms has to go to the hospital, no exceptions and legal consequences if you did not
  • quarantine measures between cities
  • no access to compounds for non residents so if your parents live in a different compound they cannot visit you
  • door were taped up to identify if quarantine had been broken
  • if you had contact with someone who was then identified as having a temp you have to be isolated until they have been tested, even if you have no symptoms.
  • I also had to take my dd’s Daughter every day and send it to the school who sent it to the local govt. this was for all children at school regardless of symptoms. Thankfully we now have weekly instead of daily reports, but still have to complete the information even though we are not in China at the moment.
Sounds like France is also being strict which is definitely a positive.
AnneKipanki · 17/03/2020 14:17

That will be why there are videos of packed hospital corridors then .

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2020 14:22

Yes.
All private clinics were closed to ensure that all cases could be registered and monitored.

liberoncolours · 17/03/2020 16:50

shanghai that is really interesting, thanks. I am guessing that more will be implemented here if current arrangements don't have affect. A key thing is the temperature taking from the sound of it.

annekipanki I had read a few posts by shanghai and was confident that it was ok to ask the question! first hand testimonies about how the virus has been successfully limited are really helpful.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2020 17:17

Yes, the temp taking seems central to the way the process is managed. There are clearly weaknesses in this approach as you could have a temp for an entirely benign reason, but this is how it works in China.
Happy to answer any questions.
My experience and those of my friends is that measures are tough, often frustrating, sometimes unpleasant but generally fair.

AnneKipanki · 17/03/2020 17:20

Yes , first hand knowledge is best . I did not want SD to be compromised in any way.
As you thought, she was happy to answer your queries.
It's all good then.

mathanxiety · 18/03/2020 14:44

But governments have to consider minimizing the impact to livelihoods and ensuring that people comply.
Lweji

There are more ways and far better ways of doing this than refusing to close schools to ensure that people keep on going to work.

Lweji · 18/03/2020 14:49

There are more ways and far better ways of doing this than refusing to close schools to ensure that people keep on going to work.

That was my point.
Governments have to set up safety nets for parents to be allowed off work.
And be very clear that children off school means stay at home. Their home. Not with grandparents.

mathanxiety · 18/03/2020 14:52

The US is a democracy and several states postponed their primary elections yesterday in the interests of public health.

Measures like this on the part of government have educational value as well as public health value during an epidemic.

The cheerful gung ho approach of Boris Johnson's singing Happy Birthday twice while washing his hands is monumentally stupid and possibly also criminally stupid.

Lweji · 18/03/2020 15:02

My government has been heavily criticised and has had a few blunders, but the UK and the US (the orange one) are 1000s x worse

liberoncolours · 18/03/2020 15:04

Lweji I was tempted to set out the transcript of the Macron speech here, so that you can see the measures taken - re key workers, re the economy, it is referred to in Monday's speech. I have a suspicion that Boris wants to match Europe so people knowing how it is being done elsewhere might be helpful!

liberoncolours · 18/03/2020 15:08

Sorry posts crossed - I thought you were in the UK.

mathanxiety · 19/03/2020 02:18

My municipality and two neighbouring municipalities are now under a shelter in place order thanks to a confirmed case who had lots of contacts. A formerly healthy young man.
