Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

I'm in Ireland and this response is not what we have seen. The kids have all been sent home either with work packs or are logging in to virtual classrooms /email taught classes at usual class times.

Parents/children have been advised to limit social interaction by young people as otherwise it will defeat the purpose of them being at home. So far, this seems to be being observed on a widescale basis.

Whether it lasts more than two weeks will be very tricky unless people see real benefits of the social distancing policy - i.e. slower growth in cases here compared to elsewhere.

But no mad rush to take holidays - travel is currently dramatically curtailed by social pressure....strong appeals by Govt for community solidarity and action seems to be reasonably successful (with some notably idiotic exceptions e.g. panic buying)

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2020 15:18

They would need to put strict travel bans in place at the same time.

Lumene · 13/03/2020 15:18

The govt say they want most to get it but slow the spread. Pretty consistent message.

Not sure if it’s the right one but it’s pretty clear!

BirdandSparrow · 13/03/2020 15:18

Same here in Andalucía. Kids have been sent home today with two weeks' work to do and we are being told to isolate as much as possible.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:19

Honestly well off people with second homes will be more likely to be able to work from home. They will head to second homes whether the Government closes schools or not.
Only us plebs are supposed to keep sending our kids there. Because we have to keep the economy going.

AutumnRose1 · 13/03/2020 15:19

Growing oh, you’re in a posh bit? My rough area of London is the same except the shops are heaving.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:20

@Lumene They are doing nothing to stop the spread. Allowing Cheltenham to go ahead?
It is about the economy. Nothing more.

Jespers · 13/03/2020 15:20

No, that's what happens when you close schools to stop your children getting or spreading a virus in a pandemic and selfish friggin people decide it's a holiday and they should congregate on beaches.
Idiots.
People are told it's for the safety of themselves and their families but don't stay put...

BigFatLiar · 13/03/2020 15:21

Closing for two weeks? What happens then? They did say that they expected the peek in a couple of months. If you're isolating to reduce the risk of catching it then you need to be of for months.

Pumpkinpie1 · 13/03/2020 15:21

“Many of you will die” says a glib Boris ...... That’s The aim of the last 10 years of conservative austerity policy surely?
Another clueless short term policy disciple of a PM .
Will he be starting paternity leave early I wonder?

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:21

I am taking my kids out of school from Monday. Seriously consider it everyone if you can. I do know not everyone can.

HollowTalk · 13/03/2020 15:21

If they're providing care for the kids then they might as well stay in school!

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:22

@BigFatLiar China is seeing a real decline in cases now. So not 4 months of closure. And they had far more cases than we currently have.

justasking111 · 13/03/2020 15:22

Double whammy here, we live in a retirement area, with second homes and a lot of tourism. Our hospitals/gps/residential homes struggle with the pensioners needing a lot of care add the whammy of tourism at the end of this month from camping through to hotel accommodation/secondhomes/airbnb, we are pretty stuffed.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:23

@HollowTalk It will be for essential workers. So lots of kids will not be in childcare. It is a balancing act.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:24

And some countries are closing schools for 2 weeks and then assessing. They need to analyse information and decide what to do. After 2 weeks is easter holidays anyway, so one month kids will be away.

Growingboys · 13/03/2020 15:26

Yep @AutumnRose1 - I said it's very MC. Most of the 4x4s have left, it's just the occasional Ocado van now...

Bumfuzzled · 13/03/2020 15:28

Even if they don’t close the schools, I’m worried about Cornwall (where I live) getting a huge spike over the Easter holidays. According to the reports there are only 5 cases here as of yesterday. I’m sure that will all change in a few weeks when everyone heads down here for the school holidays. Our main hospital goes on black alert at the drop of a hat every year. It’s not going to cope.

Is the solution banning all non essential travel? Or do we need as a county to get more infections to get some immunity to it? If travel is banned over Easter it would financially cripple a lot of businesses.

I’ve no idea, it’s such a head fuck.

BigFatLiar · 13/03/2020 15:29

China is seeing a real decline in cases now. So not 4 months of closure. And they had far more cases than we currently have.

Yes but they didn't do much until it was getting out of hand. There was a woman on local radio talking about her visit to friends in China and she was saying that she knew before she went about the virus in China but the advice at the time was still to go. When she got there her friend knew nothing about it. They went touring around China and it was only at the end of her holiday that China started telling the people about it and putting in measures, several weeks after the rest of the world knew.

koshkatt · 13/03/2020 15:30

Never, I have been so glad not to live in a democracy...

What a fucking stupid comment.

TheOrigBrave · 13/03/2020 15:33

We just got this from my son's primary school "A school closure would not be a holiday and the children will be expected to continue their learning. The expectations for their learning will be provided via parentmail from their class teachers and TAs."

I suppose it's easy enough to do that from somewhere other than home, but we will be staying put for sure as 1) it's what you're meant to do 2) I work from home anyway so no change for me.

BirdandSparrow · 13/03/2020 15:34

Closing for two weeks? What happens then? They reassess. There's only a week between then and the one-week easter break, so they may extned and make it a total of a month without school.

wantsomeanswers · 13/03/2020 15:38

My daughters uni is closing from Monday and lectures will be online , lots of students will head home on public transport

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:39

Lots of universities have plans to close. They are putting staff and students first.

Caspianberg · 13/03/2020 15:39

All schools and shops apart from supermarkets and pharmacies will be closed here as from Monday. All but essential workers to work from home. It will become illegal to rent air b and b, hotels etc so nobody can go on holiday to another part of the country.
There is no 2 week deadline either, just as from Monday, until further notice. There was no panic buying at shops yesterday when I went, loo roll and hand sanitizer plenty, and shelves all stocked. Most people only seemed to be buy that days worth of groceries as no full trollies.
