Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

If you aren't bringing it down as quickly, it HAS to rise higher. The only benefit in terms of lives to that would be if you were hoping to get less overall infected. But we're not. So the only benefit that's being aimed for has to be economic.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 21:39

No I disagree. But there are two camps I know.

I thought it was but enough last week and felt the same but I can see that changing behaviour is crucial. Especially when you look at how people react - Italy to lock down for eg.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 21:40

Not enough

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 21:40

That was to Jas

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 21:53

@MarshaBradyo
You are right: we all learn better when the threat affects us.
My dh works for an Austrian company. When he raised the issue of the virus back in January it was suggested he was panicking over a sniffle. The Austrians are now closing schools as the sniffle is in their backyard...

mathanxiety · 14/03/2020 22:05

So here is what is happening in my local high school (US) wrt students receiving free and reduced price school meals:

We would appreciate everyone's help getting out the word about our meal-distribution schedule for students who receive free and reduced lunch.

• Today, Friday, March 13: From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., we will have tables set up in the Student Center to pick up meals that contain perishable ingredients.

^• Monday, March 16: From 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. families may pick up a package of either 5 or 10 shelf-stable meals from the [schoolname] van parked on the south side of the building [at X campus landmark].

• Friday, March 20: From 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. families who did not pick up 10 meals on Monday may pick up a package with an additional 5 shelf-stable meals from the van parked on the south side of the building.

Thank you for your support as we work to make an incredibly stressful time a little less difficult for our school community.

This is for those of you wondering how on earth students receiving free school means could be served if schools closed in the UK.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 22:08

Shanghai I reckon if it happens again in our lifetime you’d hear the shutting of borders from the moon after first case. We’d be so fast.

Shutting them now isn’t that helpful when we’ve got homegrown cases.

Ilovetravelling · 14/03/2020 22:10

Yes people who travel anywhere especially abroad are just plain stupid & entirely selfish. 😬

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 22:11

Yes, I think you are right!
Mathanxiety- great example there with the meals.

France, Spain, US and others have all declared states of emergency.
No matter what closures they’ve done over us we’re all in the same place or will be.
(Bar those who’ve been through similar before)

alloutoffucks Sat 14-Mar-20 20:57:03
No other countries will be in a much better place than us. Wait for the deaths to stack up in the UK way more than other countries.

MarshaBradyo Sat 14-Mar-20 21:00:57
Do you think that’s because they’ll have a lower proportion of cases? Or something else

Germany is doing well so far but even Merkel says 70% will get it

There won't be as many deaths per 100,000 of population elsewhere because all the acute cases won't be appearing in hospitals at the same time as they will in the UK.

In the UK the big spike will happen and people will die in their thousands because hospitals will be completely overwhelmed.

In other countries, the numbers needing ICU treatment will be kept steadier and health services will have a better chance at saving lives.

Not sure why this is so hard to understand. It has been explained multiple times.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 22:13

Fgs Math you don’t have to explain it it’s obvious Hmm

I didn’t say otherwise

I was asking All what she thought the proportion would be

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 22:14

So you can save your time and not write me long posts

Here is how the local high school is doing online learning, with some FAQs thrown in:
............
Frequently Asked Questions about E-Learning

For Parents
(Scroll Down for Student FAQs)

What is e-learning?

On school days when attendance is not possible due to severe weather concerns or other emergencies, students will complete learning experiences at home. Student attendance will be based on digital check-in procedures. Learning experiences will be communicated through Google Classroom or Skyward.

Why are we planning for e-learning?

E-learning allows school districts to expand learning outside the school walls. In addition, rules surrounding what “counts” for a day of attendance have changed at the state level, providing Illinois districts with flexibility to determine the structure of a school day. An e-learning day is now considered a day of attendance.

What are the attendance expectations for my child?

Each e-learning day begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m. By 10:00 a.m. students must submit a Google Form for each class they receive a grade in. Teachers will report attendance in Skyward by period and class.

How can I contact teachers, counselors, and other professional staff?

Email them directly.

How will my child’s accommodations be met?

Teachers received an IEP snapshot for each student at the start of the school year. The IEP snapshot indicates what accommodations should be followed. If a student is enrolled in a single-semester class and has any new classes for the second semester, the new teachers received the IEP snapshots as well.

How will parents and/or students get tech support at home?

Please call the Emergency Helpdesk Phone: xxx-xxx-xxxx.

How can I help my child?

School closures for any reason are stressful for students because their routines, social supports, and physical activities are different. Parents and guardians can help by reassuring children that e-learning days are opportunities to take responsibility for learning, engage meaningfully with teachers and classmates, and manage their time by continuing practice routines, reading independently, and completing assignments.

For Students:

What if my chromebook doesn’t work? OR What if I don’t have a charger?

Email the Helpdesk at helpdesk@ schoolname or call the Emergency Helpdesk number: xxx-xxx-xxxx.

What if I do not have Internet access at home?

Email the Helpdesk at helpdesk@ schoolname Emergency Helpdesk Phone: xxx-xxx-xxxx.
(Emailing obv not going to be possible if no internet)

How do I let my teachers know that I am present?

You will receive a link to a Google Form on the e-learning website. You will need to complete the form for each class that you attend.

What if I turn in an assignment late?

Contact your teacher regarding late or missing assignments. You also may want to refer to your classroom syllabus regarding policy on late or missing work.

What if I need to be absent from e-learning for a day?

Have your parents report your absence per email at attendance@ schoolname

How do I contact my teachers?

You will be able to access your teachers via email between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If your teacher uses Google Classroom and you have a general question, you can ask a question in the Google Classroom.

Can I access my counselor and social worker?

You will be able to access your counselor or social worker via email between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

What if I don’t understand an assignment and need help?

Your teacher will be available for support via email during the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

How will I know the grades for my assignments?

Teachers will be posting grades in Skyward as usual.

If I am on free/reduced lunch, how do I access my pre-packaged meal?

Someone from the school will be reaching out to you to let you know how to access those meals.

What if I left something I need at school?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to enter the school until it officially reopens.

How will I find out my Quarter 3 grades?

The school will send you information about how to access your Quarter 3 grades in Skyward.Teachers will receive an extension for posting Quarter 3 grades. More information will be sent to students and families.

Can I access the Helpdesk if I need assistance?

Yes, send an email to helpdesk@ schoolname. Alternatively, you can contact the Emergency Helpdesk at xxx-xxx-xxxx.

How will my teacher contact me?

Your teacher will contact you via email. Stay logged in to your school account and school each day we are doing e-learning.

What if I need library resources?

You can email the librarian at librarygroup@schoolname for questions you may have regarding resources.

Can I talk to my teacher on the phone?

Communication with your teacher will need to be via email. Be specific when you send an email to your teacher and they will respond to you during the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

How will I know what is happening and when school is reopening?

We strongly suggest that you keep your school email open during the e-learning day and that you check carefully for all messages you receive from schoolname.

Do I still attend my job shadowing, field-based or off-campus course?

Due to the fact that schoolname personnel will not be available to supervise or accompany students as is required, students are not required to attend these courses.
.........
(Note - students are issued with chromebooks at this school).

masterchef98 · 14/03/2020 22:45

Not read it all, i will do but first post resonates. I said exactly this for why Italy took the whole country into lockdown. I live on costa del sol, we weren't doing too bad til they locked down madrid now we have loads of madrileños here, (rumoured) cases in our town and whole country going into lockdown.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 22:51

For those pp saying they should have done lock down see the reaction on the 70s lock down thread.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 22:58

People think they want the govt to do something extreme but when it happens we act irrationally and want to flee being controlled.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 14/03/2020 23:32

For those of you in Ireland, who is looking after the kids? Do you have more SAHPs than the UK?

masterchef98 · 14/03/2020 23:56

Some people might want to flee being controlled. I have been waiting prepared for it for a month. In southern spain, schools close, lockdown ready to start and we are ready for it, all I need now is the final word from my employers that I can work from home and we will lock down.

Griefmonster · 15/03/2020 01:10

Why do people think UK are such outliers with their approach? They're not. Sweden is doing very similar, Germany not that different. WHO person on ch4news was keen to explain that we are all in unknown territory here.

The problem I think on UK has been some unfortunate "explanations" of the approach from BoJo (and some very selective editing - the "get covid done" meme is cut off midway). He is dreadful at explaining nuance and this is one of the most complex situations any government has had to manage for at least a generation.

Bit they are actively managing it. From the outset they have been clear it is a staged approach (contain, delay, mitigate etc) and that timing from one set of actions to the next is critical. When people say UK is doing nothing that does a great disservice to the thousands of workers who have been testing, tracing and now treating and preparing. Life is going to look very different once it takes hold and we will see more obvious "things" being done.

And that is not because UK is "finally listening" it is because the evidence suggests the timing is right to move to that stage. If you Google Jason Leitch STV flatten the curve you will see on of the medical experts advising on the response explaining the delay phase.

Thank you to everyone who is on the front line and behind the scenes who must be silently screaming at the fear and panic that is being spread by some discussions online.

Bool · 15/03/2020 01:33

@Griefmonster Flowers

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 01:45

@Griefmonster No Germany are very different. All schools closed on Monday. They are widely testing and contact tracing.

Britain is an outlier. They are the only country saying it is too hard to tackle this virus, so we just let most people get it and half a million die.

I am getting so tired that so many people keep repeating that other countries are also doing nothing when that simply is not true.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 01:47

@bool You already know that it is not true that other countries are doing nothing. Why are you agreeing with what you already know is untrue?
Is there a deliberate attempt here to spread lies?

Allaboardthemagicbus2020 · 15/03/2020 02:00

I just don't get this - European countries are taking one approach, we are taking another but if there is travel still between countries to and from here it will completely mess it all up. Are any countries closing their borders? None in Europe that I know of.

Heathrow etc still open, Eurostar, ferries - the transmission from travellers will counteract the measures sort by those countries trying containment so why don't they close borders?

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 02:17

I suspect they will soon We don't know what is going on behind the scenes.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 02:20

@Oblahdeeoblahdoe
No, there are many, many WOHPs in Ireland. But people are working from home as much as humanly possible, and it is accepted and appreciated that fewer hours will be logged because you just can't be as productive when bothered by small children as you could be in an office. Schools have sent work that needs to be done and there are classes online too. Secondary schools are online.

Here is Irish government advice wrt children and childcare:
www.gov.ie/en/publication/178c07-covid-19-coronavirus-health-advice-for-children/#childcare

They suggest you might have someone come to your home to mind your children, but not to task people older than 75 with childcare.
