Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

Sorry @MarshaBradyo . I did not have time to read the whole thread.
I dip in and out of things .

AnneKipanki · 14/03/2020 14:48

At least we agree though!
That's always a nice thing 👍🏻

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/03/2020 14:49

We will have developed natural immunity as a population.

This is a hypothesis. It's unknown, it's untested, it's unproven, there is no hard evidence of this at all. This is one giant experiment and it isn't one the WHO are standing behind.

If natural immunity develops after catching it once, why did so many young, fit health care workers die in China? What about viral load?

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 14:51

Ha Anne yep 😀

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/03/2020 14:52

And why aren't other countries going the 'let's get Covid 19 Done' route like the UK if herd immunity is so likely and this is such a great idea?

I don't see Germany rushing towards this, or France, or the US, or anywhere really. I don't think they're unaware of the economic issues or the risks of issues re emerging when a lock down has to end, and yet they're still choosing lockdown over chicken pox party approaches.

peeledplumtomatoes · 14/03/2020 16:02

@Michelleoftheresistance, I think UK are taking a long term measured view (12+ months) with the aim of achieving population wide immunity, as opposed to a panic response such as lockdown.

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/03/2020 16:10

Yes, we all think they are - since they're not being that open with us. I understand the concept. The fact remains it's one massive gamble based on nothing more than a hypothesis and if it fails the effects are likely to be devastating. And no other countries - presumably with equal intelligence and science - are seeing this as the best option.

It's not that I'm insufficiently educated, it's that I'm not convinced this is a viable plan, or that any other country thinks this is a viable plan.

peeledplumtomatoes · 14/03/2020 16:57

It is a gamble. Perhaps BJ really is callous enough to put the economy over people's lives. But I find it hard to believe the CMO and CSO would have the same attitude.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 17:06

They are not putting the economy over people’s lives.

Dreamprincess · 14/03/2020 17:15

Problem is that the most likely people to cop a packet or worse are the very people who apparently voted Brexit and for his Conservative government. So in theory he might save the economy but kill off his voter base, including Stanley his dad.

BirdandSparrow · 14/03/2020 17:49

I don't think it's as simple as putting the economy over people's lives, but I do think they've badly misjudged how to handle it.

Dreamprincess · 14/03/2020 18:13

they've badly misjudged how to handle it.

As I have indicated before, I am in one of the high risk groups. Personally I am glad to have a few more days when I can go out, following current guidance of course. Soon enough I will be closeted in my home for possibly months on end, apparently without visits from my children, grandchildren etc. in case they infect me.

My Ocado delivery driver wanted to leave my order on the doorstep, but as I was in déshabillée, he kindly broke the rules and placed it inside my front door. Every day I can go out now is precious at my age.

If you are younger, please follow the current advice and self-isolate yourselves instead of constantly moaning at the government's advice.

BirdandSparrow · 14/03/2020 18:28

You might not like quarantine, we're hardly thrilled here in Spain, but it IS coming. The UK has done bugger all, has only in the last few hours banned large gatherings and pretty much nothing else. Not even testing most people. It's about to explode in your faces. Deaths may be low, but they doubled in one day yesterday. Once it passes the tipping point you'll have no choice.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 18:29

Bird no one can avoid it spreading. Not even countries that have banned mass gatherings or shut schools.

They can only flatten the peak same as everyone else. There are a few tools to do it and you need to use them at the right time.

BirdandSparrow · 14/03/2020 18:31

The UK isn't using any tools as far as I can see.

Devlesko · 14/03/2020 18:32

marsha

Have you evidence of this? The scientists and other countries don't agree with Boris.
There is absolutely no proof of herd immunity to this virus.
The WHO have stated this, and should know more than Boris and his gov scientists.

Astressie · 14/03/2020 18:32

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned that one of the reasons schools will not be closed it due to childcare issues, eg impact on NHS workforce + more importantly elderly more vulnerable grandparents being landed with childcare. This of course could impact on death rate and a spike in numbers which NHS may not be able to cope with.

missclimpson · 14/03/2020 18:34

Am I the only person who has recently noticed that quarantine actually means 40 days?

mathanxiety · 14/03/2020 18:47

Flattening the peak is the result of as much prevention of spread as humanly possible, Marsha.

mathanxiety · 14/03/2020 18:48

Yes, and all of this is happening in Lent too, missclimpson

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 18:50

Yes I know. And each Western country is employing the same tactics at different times.

We’ve all missed the opportunity to react as China did.

And SARS affected no idea how they are going atm but were doing well.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 18:52

Merkel says she knows 70% will get it and still shuts schools and cancels mass events. We’re all in the same boat.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 18:54

Bird they are. They have done something others have skipped changed behaviour. Then when the time is right will use others like schools and mass events (although others have said this is more about emergency services).

The only best way us to do what China did, and Taiwan etc. Then it’s the rest of us.

justasking111 · 14/03/2020 18:58

China will loosen the rules carefully it it all looks like exploding again they will commence their second lock down. Would the British be as amenable to this way of living does anyone think?

Bool · 14/03/2020 18:58

@BirdandSparrow The UK isn't using any tools as far as I can see.

Then you are not looking hard enough. We have two key tools that have been deployed. And they happen to be the ones that have the most effect.

  1. WASH YOUR HANDS FOR 20 SECONDS
  2. SELF ISOLATE FOR 7 DAYS IF YOU HAVE A NEE COUGH OR A FEVER OVER 37.8 DEGREES

But because these tools are not sensationalist headline grabbing things then the majority of people find it hard to comprehend that they are expected to take individual responsibility. I am praying there are enough of my fellow countrymen who are sensible enough to listen and do the above. These are our tools and we are going to use them.

The other tools such as school closures etc will come in due course.
