Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

The only ones who managed it better I reckon are the ones who had SARS threat

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2020 10:35

Yes, the far Eastern countries learned lessons from SARS and have in general acted really well.

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 10:36

Singapore is doing well, but it is tiny and has an excellent health care system.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 10:37

Taiwan reacted well

Bool · 14/03/2020 10:42

@Vandree that’s ok Vandree. What strange times we are living in

Bool · 14/03/2020 10:45

@yes Singapore is doing well. But is small and dictatorial. I don’t know whether to believe the figures from South Korea. And do we believe the Japan figures? We won’t know who is managing this well for another year yet. It is too early to say. I am trying to stay calm and keep going on as normal for as long as possible because it will be a shit show once we really need to shutdown. Staying isolated for a long time is going to be difficult. Italy has done it for 5 days now and it is HARD. Imagine for 3 months?

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2020 10:49

Yes it will be really hard, but better than the alternative, people dying alone on a camp bed in a tent because there are no beds and no equipment.
I actually feel relief my parents are no longer alive, and that I was able to sit with my mother for days as she was dying, and care for her.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 10:51

What the world can learn from Taiwan’s response it’s a week old though so might be different now.

In the Independent paper

Booboostwo · 14/03/2020 10:51

Realistically we all need to prepare for both isolation long term and deaths. It's not an either or case, it's a case of which version is the best out of the possible awful options.

Noodlenosefraggle · 14/03/2020 10:52

To be fair we wont really know who is right probably for another year. Going by how other viruses react, as soon as restrictions are lifted, it will roar back, mutated into something stronger. We will only find out who was right once the second round hits.

liberoncolours · 14/03/2020 10:55

@mathanxiety people who live rurally aren't used to isolation, no! How Ireland are handling it seems to be really sensible. I was talking about other European countries but there have been updates since then.

@EarringsandLipstick I think how Ireland is handling it is really sensible. The updates in Europe on some govmt websites are making things more streamlined and organised too.

tinytemper66 · 14/03/2020 10:55

Schools are preparing to close in Wales getting work put online etc but I don't think we will close next week.
We are furiously giving Year 11 mock exams so OFQUAL will use then if GCSEs can't go ahead.
I can go into school for the duration if need be as I have no children of school age or who live at home. Most of my colleagues have small children so I can at least do my 'bit'.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 10:56

That’s true Noodle

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 10:57

My province in China is doing well - no deaths in a population of 70 million. Measures have started to be relaxed in my city and It is a zero case city as everyone has recovered. However, there are strict rules in place for people returning home with 14 day self isolation, no shopping trips and no walking the dog! Rubbish is collected from outside your home and food deliveries are left outside your door by compound mgt.

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2020 11:00

I am also in Wales and think I will have to keep my dc out before they close, but panicking about my dc who is in yr 11 and has a GCSE next week.
Will they go by predicted grades I wonder ?

BigChocFrenzy · 14/03/2020 11:04

Schools in Germany closing from Monday until at least Friday 17 April, the end of Easter hols

BUT
They will stay open or otherwise provide childcare for a list of essential workers

People here seem to be behaving sensibly so far and following govt advice
Lots of social distancing

Confirmed COVID cases are monitored during self-isolation and contacts tracked
That obviously won't hold once we get into hundreds of thousands of cases

tinytemper66 · 14/03/2020 11:21

Sir Vix I honestly don't know. I would rather we closed to KS3 and have exam classes in if possible. How feasible that will be I don't know. We are not told anything.

AnneKipanki · 14/03/2020 12:00

Taiwan has had experience with SARS . That has probably helped in their response.

AnneKipanki · 14/03/2020 12:01

Super organisational skills too when it comes to rebuilding infrastructure after typhoons.

NoGravyForYou · 14/03/2020 13:13

Tbh @Kokeshi123 I'm surprised that it's gone so well in Ireland myself and I'm irish. The last time we ended up on some kind of lockdown for more than one day, we ended up destroying a lidl with a digger 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I honestly think people are scared and at this point are happy to put their faith in a government that have taken a step we thought they wouldn't. I don't think anyone was expecting the announcement on Thursday taht schools were closing with immediate effect. We thought it would be from this Monday coming, especially after how long they fussed about cancelling the st Patrick's day parades.

There's been a huge community spirit with shops offering to deliver food and items to the vulnerable and so many places offering free services to health care workers.

Childminders have been advised to stay open, keep numbers low and prioritise the children of healthcare workers.

Education book suppliers are opening up their online resources for free, people are sharing their tips and websites to help everyone get through the possible next 5 weeks of kids off school.
The Taoiseach said in his speech that we need to protect the vulnerable and work together to get through this and so far that's what's been happening and it's been amazing to see.

It's only been a few days though so we may bulldoze a lidl again before we know it 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

peeledplumtomatoes · 14/03/2020 13:25

@Noodlenosefraggle, totally agree. For once the government are thinking long term. This virus will be back every year like normal flu.

Lockdown does nothing to eradicate it because it can't be eradicated. It just means the virus will spread once lockdown ends.

In the long term the UK will be in a much better position than the lockdown countries. We will have developed natural immunity as a population.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 13:28

Taiwan has had experience with SARS . That has probably helped in their response

Yes it did. I’ve said the same in nearly all posts bar that one with link, SARS affected countries have done well especially.

justasking111 · 14/03/2020 13:31

OH cheered me up today, more folk died from the second wave of spanish flu than the first.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 13:51

The Spanish flu killed young and healthy people. It reacted totally differently to corona virus.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 13:52

And became more virulent.
