Haven’t most of the hospitals now reduced their visiting hours and limited visitors per person? I know the main ones near me have

New born baby and mother with it.

America is a perfect storm of poor long-term planning, poor management of early stages of outbreak, poor healthcare access, expensive healthcare, lack of job security and workers protections (plus No job = no healthcare) and an inept leader. Plus guns.

It will bankrupt and kill more in the us than it should compared to other nations

SistemaAddict · 14/03/2020 09:16

Red yes I've noticed a divide too. It was the same with brexit worries in my experience. Although Waitrose is out of all loo roll online except their own essentials brand. They had plenty of pasta though.

People on my course aren't worried except that their holiday or friends destination wedding might be cancelled. There seems to be no concept of what having the be quarantined in a foreign country would mean to them.

middleager · 14/03/2020 09:27

Firstly in any crisis of this scale having public trust is very important. It affects behaviour.

This. Just this.

On Newsnight last night one of the academics said during the Blitz the misinformation/lack of info caused such distrust among the electorate.

fedup21 · 14/03/2020 09:31

Yes, I think public trust is important. No, I don’t think Boris has it.

The guardian new page reports that our government are thinking of maybe stopping large gatherings, as from NEXT WEEKEND?!!!

Horehound · 14/03/2020 09:35

@FacingtheAbess

Who is sir Patrick for all we know he could be the most inhumane man on earth.

He worked for GSk, did a lot of work in the field of R&D, was very well thought of. Don't assume he's just popped up from nowhere, these people have had good, extensive careers in the field they are no experts in.

anonacfr · 14/03/2020 09:40

Lots of venues seem to be more pro-active. I was meant to go to a gig next weekend.
I received an email from the place telling me it was postponed, hopefully will be rescheduled, if not refunded.

Our school had planned concerts and an Easter festival. Everything has been scrapped.
School assemblies open to parents have been scrapped.

It seems people are (finally) setting guidelines. Shame the government isn't.

China has no home quarantine as most infections seem to be from family members, according to this. Very different approach to UK.

Wehttam · 14/03/2020 09:44

Morning all, let’s see what today brings 👀

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 09:47

China has home isolation and quarantine in designated quarantine facilities. These measures are for people with no symptoms.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 14/03/2020 09:50

How long after being exposed do symptoms show?

Random18 · 14/03/2020 09:58

Beth Rigby has retweeted an interesting thread re the UK approach.

I don't know how to put link here.

Everything does seem so logical but obviously there are so many things that could go wrong.

And also if other countries do manage to wipe it with a sustained lockdown then lives will be lost when they definitely could have been saved.

I think the WHO still thinks it can be contained?

Random18 · 14/03/2020 09:58

Lives here lost I mean, because of UK approach

Marlox · 14/03/2020 10:01

Broadway in america is pretty much shut, so suprised our westend doesnt seem to be making the same choice

I wonder if some of the mass gathering includes them id the venue is large enough?

Im seeing lots of comedians on tour, musicals etc saying they will continue at the moment

Wehttam · 14/03/2020 10:05

marlox It’s beyond irresponsible and all about the ££££££££££ it stinks of greed. ANYONE booking a ticket to see a show right now is literally playing with fire.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 10:05

Hore.. That makes me even more concerned.

I don't doubt his scientist cred at all.
. But it's not just about science is it.
. There is a whole picture here to consider

mrshoho · 14/03/2020 10:07

Random that is exactly it when you say that so many things could go wrong. We are dealing with a new virus and human beings. If there is no u turn and we continue with this approach I can see the NHS crashing due to the decision to let it spread throughout.

Marlox · 14/03/2020 10:09

@wehttam

Its the same as needing the official guidance re traveling though in order to claim on insurance

Theres lots of people with expensive (wether £250+ each or expensive to them) tickets or for sold out shows booked months in advance.

If theres official closures than theres hopefully a chance to rebook etc, refunds etc but currently people will just lose significant money etc if they just dont turn up.

Horehound · 14/03/2020 10:12

Argh edit to my post *extensive careers in the field they ARE experts in."

@MacronsPensWiper oh absolutely and he will be looking at it and so will the rest of them.
