Exochord you are making the assumption that stockpiling is effective and the best course of action. Which plainly it is not
How is stockpiling not effective? It means people can batten down the hatches and stay at home for a couple of weeks to avoid having to go out for groceries and risk catching the virus.

rainbowunicorn · 13/03/2020 23:52

@GalOopNorth don't be ridiculous. It would be no where near. It is percentage of total infected cases not population. Also given that so many people may have it and never be tested as they do not require hospital treatment or have no actual symptoms the death rate would be even lower.
People really need to understand what they are reading before posting dramatic rubbish.

Random18 · 13/03/2020 23:55

ohMargo everything is an experiment.

Even China, we do not know the results long term.

You could easily argue that some European countries have reacted too quickly.

I'm not saying that is the case - we won't know.for many months.

But to comapre the situation in the UK to say tha
Rwandan genocide is just ridiculous.

Random18 · 13/03/2020 23:56

Shoo

Since I am in the UK and will be directly impacted by the decisions the UK govt make I will not Shoo.

Half marathon still going ahead in Bath this Sunday :-(

cocodomingo · 14/03/2020 00:00

The policy is so backwards, how will the police detain the infected when the infected cant even get tested to confirm they are indeed infected??

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 14/03/2020 00:01

Night ofwarren.

Dramalamaindeed · 14/03/2020 00:01

@cocodomingo

Very true, just shows how unthought out this is.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 00:02

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 01:13

In Italy, the hospitalisation rate seems to be 75 percent men and 25 percent woman,

The policy is so backwards, how will the police detain the infected when the infected cant even get tested to confirm they are indeed infected??

Perhaps the police will be supplied with thermometer guns, and they'll hide around corners like with speed guns, and silently zap us all?

CrunchyCarrot · 14/03/2020 06:00

Police will be able to detain infected people and schools could be forced to stay open under a package of powers being announced next week to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Emergency laws to help to limit the spread of the virus will be introduced after the number of people infected in Britain rose by 200 in 24 hours to 798. The measures, seen by The Times, will also let councils lower standards in care homes to deal with staff shortages.

There's no joined up thinking with this approach at all! Why force schools to stay open when many of the teachers will end up sick and being off work? And how do you know someone is infected? Would the police have to wear hazmat suits to arrest them? And as for 'lower standards in care homes...' well, they are bad enough as it is, the mind honestly boggles, and there'll be no-one to check what's going on. I am horrified.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 06:11

Odd list of measures.

Glad they are finally doing something but we don’t know if we have it without a test and nor do they.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 06:14

When the modellers said at first it will feel like nothing is happening and then it will hit hard the govt still didn’t believe it.

Not just here either so many policies that don’t make much sense now.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 06:19

Probably the best attack was Taiwan (and a couple of others) probably because they learnt from SARS.

Everyone else is trying things out, including govts who have acted early closing everything down.

QueenofmyPrinces · 14/03/2020 06:23

Perhaps we could overthrow the Government, get BJ out and get Labour in to sort out his mess.

One can only dream.....

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 06:30

Labour is the last thing I’d want to happen now. Not that they are anywhere to be seen.

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 14/03/2020 06:38

Has anybody else had a frank discussion at home with their Husband/partner about the prospect of the financial implications this situation may well have.. we are both self employed my Husband runs his own business and it's likely that will slow down and invoice left unpaid.. I may well have to take a sabbatical as I'm a contractor so money could get tight in a matter of months. We don't have an endless pot of savings and are now thinking of what if's anyone else?

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 06:41

The school open / closed mandate might be to keep some open fit essential health workers but close others.

Bumblesbumbles · 14/03/2020 06:46

Schools will remain open to ensure we reach our herd immunity. That has been made clear. They could allow parents to remove their children if they chose otherwise. Leaving childcare options for those who required it. They will only close when the NHS is nearly collapsing, I’m afraid we have to make our own choice based on individual risks

lubeybooby · 14/03/2020 06:49

@stoptherideiwanttogetoff in the same position here sort of... we're ok if we can't work or no one pays us til august/septemberish and just have to hope I suppose. Wasn't there government mention of help and money for people finding themselves up the creek? I don't know the exact details but everyone seemed very happy at the announcement
