Thats not manageable large scale is it as there's no guarantees, and isolation is isolation!

HeresMe · 09/03/2020 21:10

Whole of Italy on lockdown! Wow

Except it's clearly not true they have just banned public gatherings.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/03/2020 21:10

Bloody hell.

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 21:11

Italy’s lockdown makes BJ’s stance of ‘maybe doing something in 10-14 days’ look rather weak.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 21:11

I hope all those crying it's nothing are ready for the isolation, as this is a necessary evil.

But 7 days is manageable I guess

@HeresMe that is not how I read the article.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 21:12

@ShanghaiDiva Despite my disgust at the Chinese regime, I agree that

  • once they actually accepted there was a crisis and stopped intimidating the whistleblowers -
the Chinese authorities made a very effective job of bringing the situation under control

Hopefully, there will not be a significant spike as conditions are eased,
but I expect they'd just re-impose the clampdown

What do you see as feasible to copy in a democratic country,
given what seems the rejection by most of the British public of any measure that costs them income or stops them enjoying something ?

Or do you think dither & wait will work in Britain, starting from a much lower #infections and being an island ?

DonkeyKong2019 · 09/03/2020 21:14

This is going to sound awful but I genuinely don't think my MH could cope with two weeks isolated with my two children. Both have additional needs. I'm borderline anxiety attack thinking about it

Horehound · 09/03/2020 21:14

What do you mean @HeresMe?

IrenetheQuaint · 09/03/2020 21:15

Italy is not imposing full isolation, most people will still go to work. It's just public/social gatherings that have been closed down.

I'd guess this is the model we'd be most likely to follow here, rather than full China-style home arrest

HeresMe · 09/03/2020 21:18

What do you mean @HeresMe?

Read the article rather than the headline, public crowd events ect are banned.
Public transport is still running people are still working.

ChipotleBlessing · 09/03/2020 21:18

Why the fuck would anyone think isolation would include being able to travel 80km whether you’re on a bike or not?!

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 21:18

"how does going on solitary family walk impact anyone though?"

@Facingtheunknown It's a lack of trust / verification that they will avoid meeting anyone
Also they might leave traces on a surface that someone else 30 minutes later touches, so the virus is transferred

and the difficulty of policing it all.

In Germany & other countries, people are monitored by phone - iirc in Singapore very closely
Germany has jail & fines if anyone is found outside - so far no cases of this

People worrying about the 38 year old marathon runner, he may well have underlying conditions. My DH runs marathons and has high blood pressure. I know another marathon runner who has diabetes.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 21:20

This is what concerns me about attempting ANY such measures in the UK

Many people just won't give up what they want to do and won't accept why they can't do it

Bool · 09/03/2020 21:20

Went to a public gathering at the weekend and was SHOCKED to see two people who had just flown in from Milan there. They just about got home again. They weren’t taking it seriously at all. Fake news etc. So maybe this will make them take it a bit more seriously.

FlamingoAndJohn · 09/03/2020 21:21

What about people who need to walk their dogs?

mac12 · 09/03/2020 21:21

Based on the maths, we are about 12 -14 days behind Italy.
But apparently Boris and Whitty have somehow reached a pact with the virus so it won't hit us hard until the warmer summer months...jolly good of them all to delay like the peak like.

Bool · 09/03/2020 21:21

38 year old Unilever worker had no underlying conditions...it’s just that he was turned down from hospital 3 times before being treated.

Hugglespuffed · 09/03/2020 21:21

I find it interesting how people can get 2 versions of information from 1 article. Unless we are reading 2 different articles @HeresMe ?

Bool · 09/03/2020 21:23

Yes we are 10-14 days behind

It's a shame the virus missed the memo. Grin

We (UK) are generally pretty compliant. But any “social distancing” will only work if people are scared enough to do it. I’m not sure there’s enough cases now to convince Jo Public that they need to stop going to the pub/cafe/meet friends/play park, etc.
There’s no way the govt can enforce policies limiting social contact, we don’t have enough police for a start! It has to be willingly done.

Daft that people are worried enough to panic buy but not worried enough to miss coffee shop/etc.
