I find it interesting how people can get 2 versions of information from 1 article. Unless we are reading 2 different articles @HeresMe ?

The article I read was skynewa but I'd say read the context rather than the article.

Yes, what Italy is doing is not what I understood by "lockdown"

It will hit the economy, but most economic activity will continue

  • All public gatherings cancelled - but public transport continues, so presumably platforms are excluded
So temporary proximity of large numbers is ok
but bans / closes all cinemas, theatres, gyms, discos and pubs, funerals (??), weddings and all sport events,

  • Also all schools and universities closed until next month

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 21:26

It’s a big fast jump isn’t it in Italy to the whole country, even though I know this isn’t people locked in their houses. I do feel for the country, the people suffering and the medics. Particularly those in badly affected regions. We should listen to their advice for us.

WouldShouldCould · 09/03/2020 21:28

@FlamingoAndJohn worst case they won't get walked.

NemophilistRebel · 09/03/2020 21:28

This says Italy on quarantine measures so not just basic lockdown

I understand it to be as Heresme does too. People can still go to work and leave their homes for essential needs.

@FlamingoAndJohn They’ll be stuck in the house with the dog. I guess trying to burn off the dog’s energy inside the house in the same way as we’ll be trying to do with toddlers.

Coronavirus sufferers symptom-free for five days on average – study
Findings suggest the 14-day quarantine period used around world strikes a good balance

People infected with coronavirus are symptom-free for an average of five days, according to a study that reinforces the need for strict quarantine measures.

The analysis found that 5.1 days was the median length of time before people started showing signs of illness, although there was a wide range of incubation periods, with a tiny minority of people taking up to two weeks.

And

The findings did not reveal the extent to which people can transmit the illness during this symptom-free period, but preliminary evidence suggests there is at least a short window before people start feeling ill when they can pass on the virus to others.

Lessler and colleagues found that about 98% of people who develop symptoms of Covid-19 will do so within 11.5 days of exposure. For every 10,000 individuals quarantined for 14 days, only about 101 would develop symptoms after being released from quarantine, the analysis estimated.

Italy's bans on all those leisure activities will stop a lot of people going out
Just work continues
(except for those employed in those activities)

Doesn't seem to ban walkers, runners or cyclists though, so that's something to do

TheRealHousewife · 09/03/2020 21:32

@Bool & @mac12 I agree with you in that we are about 10-12 days behind Italy.

WaterSheep · 09/03/2020 21:33

Egypt has placed a nationwide suspension on “any large gatherings of citizens, or those that involve the movement of citizens between governorates,” its prime minister, Mostafa Madbouly, has announced.

Egypt’s ministry of health has also said 59 people have so far been infected with the virus.

Proactive measures from Egypt.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/03/2020 21:33

@BigChocFrenzy
Yes, imagine clampdown would be re-Imposed, but that cannot keep happening indefinitely.
What I cannot understand about the comments on here are people who believe they are able to interpret restrictions to suit themselves: bonkers and selfish.
The measures taken in China are hard to replicate, not because of different political systems, but because of the way cities are set up. I live on a compound so controlling entry and exit and limiting contact is straightforward, much more difficult in uk houses and streets.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 09/03/2020 21:33

Italy is not imposing full isolation, most people will still go to work. It's just public/social gatherings that have been closed down.

Why will people insist on minimising as if it's some antidote to perceived media hysteria? Ffs.

TheGodWorm · 09/03/2020 21:34

ChipotleBlessing I'm asking because my DH usually cycles about 80km on a Saturday morning. All in a rural unpopulated area, solitary. No need to ask 'why the fuck?' My point was that if lockdown happens here the gov will have to give examples of allowed behaviour and banned activities. Some will think it is ok to chat to a neighbour over a fence, some won't think that's ok. Some will think it's ok to walk their dog, some won't.

Laniakea · 09/03/2020 21:35

What I cannot understand about the comments on here are people who believe they are able to interpret restrictions to suit themselves: bonkers and selfish.

^this is why I think any measures put in place are doomed to fail.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 09/03/2020 21:35

Interesting Lancet paper about lessons of SARS, how the Chinese cv strategy seems to work and the challenges of adapting social distancing to other cultures/countries.

mrshoho · 09/03/2020 21:35

When Italy was in the early days of this did they have all the hand washing notices that we have been getting?

WouldShouldCould · 09/03/2020 21:36

But putting in restrictions would help those that do take it seriously. For me closing schools and telling people to wfh would cut my chances of contracting it.
