Re ATMs and lift buttons - use your knuckles. Less likely to touch your face with these.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/03/2020 19:17

@nellodee
Protecting the economy seems to be the priority.
It is ironic when posters criticise the ‘barbaric, totalitarian chinese regime’ they did put people before the economy.

middleager · 08/03/2020 19:18

I use a stylus pen on buttons etc. Must remember to wipe the dabber though as this then dabs my phone!

I'm genuinely not that worried about catching it myself (although obviously I would much prefer not to and will be taking precautions to avoid it as far as possible) but I am worried about the elderly (FIL), disabled (DM) and those with pre-existing respitory conditions (DH). I'm also worried about the long-term economic outlook, political ramifications and civil unrest. And I don't understand how anyone can NOT be worried about those things. I wish I wasn't - life would be much more pleasant - but I am. And I'm very grateful for these threads and the posters on them for keeping me up to date.

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair a COBRA meeting on Monday, March 9 to discuss issues surrounding coronavirus.

squid4 · 08/03/2020 19:20

I gave blood today, consider doing this if you can, it is likely regular donations could decrease shortly as people cannot give if they have signs of infection (even mild)

DH just pointed out to me that we have latex gloves left from when we used to clean out the late Dovecats litter tray.

My hairdresser is currently in Spain.

Somebody mentioned normalcy bias on the other thread. Spot on.

Would anyone be so rude in RL as to approach a group of people '' chatting '' and tell them to shut up?

You'd think they were utterly bonkers.

This is people chatting.

Sometimes people attach too much importance to mumsnet!

I didn't 'out' myself to the mumsnetter but we were talking about the virus and she said had I seen the things people are posting on here.

I admitted vaguely that I sometimes have a look. In fact I've been glued to this since the beginningGrin

For me it's mostly the voice of reason amongst the rl naysayers and fluists.

But I remembered I had said to her word for word something I'd put on here...MNHQ deleted it very promptly for me!

I'll admit to being interested in the epidemic in an intellectual way-it's clearly an historic event unfolding and it is affecting every thing about society-except the weather. I can see how that could come across as ghoulish to people who pop in and out of the thread. But I'm genuinely horrified too.

YourWinter · 08/03/2020 19:23

Unimpressed with BBC reporting generally, not just this topic. I've spent a couple of hours the last few evenings toggling between foreign news channels (all reporting in English!) - Al Jazeera, France 24, RT HD, CGTN, Euronews, CNN, and CNBC. Interesting to have another perspective.

WokClock · 08/03/2020 19:24

I’ve just noticed the column on the worldometers site showing cases per million population by country. That is scary. Italy is already more than double China.

Coronavirus: Brits warned not to travel to northern Italy at all amid deadly outbreak

The warning from the UK Foreign Office to British travellers comes as the deaths in Italy from the Covid-19 outbreak rose from 233 to 366 in a single day

Bearbehind · 08/03/2020 19:25

OK, so if these threads aren’t designed to scaremonger, could we share what practical, reasonable, sensible things people think we can do here?

Bearing in mind most of us can’t

  • give up work
  • keep children out of school indefinitely
  • avoid all contact with the outside world
WokClock · 08/03/2020 19:27

peachgreen - me too. And also worried about the nhs is going to cope caring for so many

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 08/03/2020 19:27

I'm due to go to south Devon in a couple of weeks with my uni. I'm expecting it to be cancelled but if it's not I'm unsure if I want to go (I'm also 100% sure I don't want to fail the module the trip is attached to!) There's going to be some difficult decisions to make going forward I think.

WorriedMutha · 08/03/2020 19:28

Has anyone read anything about why Italy has had such a kicking. I would have thought that the distribution of visitors from China would have put the UK and Italy on a par. Why is Italy a month or so ahead of us. I'm just trying to understand the pattern of spread. I tend to think we should be doing more now to close off public events and limit spread now before we get to Italian levels of spread.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 19:28

Thanks for the new thread usernameishistory

Yes, some very rude ploppers trying to shut us down

Anyone is free to start their own thread claiming there is nothing to worry about

AnneKipanki · 08/03/2020 19:28

@Bearbehind
OP@ 3rd or 4th post has useful practical advice.

pussycatinboots · 08/03/2020 19:29

Helena not sure the link between latex gloves for use with litter trays and your hairdresser being in Spain. HmmGrin

AnneKipanki · 08/03/2020 19:29

And @Bearbehind
That is what they had to do in China.

Society is different here though.
