I was straw clutching really.

yorkshirepudgf · 06/03/2020 00:34

Is there a new thread?

buttermilkwaffles · 06/03/2020 00:37

@screamer1

As far as I understand it it's impossible to come up with an accurate number as there are so many varying factors. For example in South Korea it's 0.5%. The 3.4% figure is distorted by the overwhelming majority of cases being in China, even within China it varies hugely between areas. Factors include average age of population (highest in Japan and Italy), quality of healthcare provision, how much testing is being done (are most cases being detected or only the most severe?).

This article gives an overview:

Yes I think a moto of 'take action now!.
Can't people are they have all those not recovered yet. Here would we put the next wave to get it?
I think we have been too safe in EUrope we can't see it because we never have.
Also elderly have probably experienced nah issues already so won't be surprised.
Healthy young ones are in for a shock.

I can't see why pick the economy as it picks back up!
This way the kids may have spread it to most bus workers - can't see them working with pneumonia them selves.

We had the money to bail out banks.
Let's get some hospital tents up now.

Also all those who can't be sure they have had it due to staying at home when ill, will be hard for gov to judge what is happening.

yorkshirepudgf · 06/03/2020 00:43

This is the first post that I have ever made! I am long time lurker for c.9 years.
I am aware of someone who has been confirmed with covid-19. I have information indirectly (me to person who is talking directly)
I hope this helps a little.,,
He travelled to northern Italy on skiing holiday
Did sensible thing by calling 111 before coming into work
Advised to self isolate & tested positive
Continues to self isolate at home
All people on holiday also tested positive
“Mild” symptoms are worst he’s ever felt. High fever, no energy, breathlessness, achy, cough
This is self isolation. Best case scenario. Just wanted to share

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2020 00:48

I completely agree we are still within the window where it is possible to prevent COVID rocketing in the UK

There are several measures that imo should be taken immediately, e.g.

Some of them are just the govt encouraging certain behaviour:
Don't shake hands
Financial institutions: extend mortgages, car loans, any other debt if the crisis causes arrears
Firms: let your staff wfh whenever possible
DWP: cancel any appointments that are required merely for people to continue receiving benefits
Schools: allow parents to withdraw kids if they wish, without fines or losing their place
Relax rules on nursery and school ratios if extra places are required because of closures elsewhere

Some criminal sanctions to discourage bad:
Anyone officially ordered to self-isolate / quarantine who doesn't do so
Anyone profiteering (> 100% markup) by reselling handgel, masks, goggles etc

Some would cost the govt money:
Pay the full salary from day 1 of anyone who is officially told to self-isolate
Paid childcare for children of essential workers whose schools have closed (see ratios above)
Compensation for lost revenue for the self-employed & businesses, based on previous years tax returns - maybe previous 3 months for new businesses

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2020 00:50

Testing of temperature etc at airports for arrivals from higher risk countries

Forbidding UK flights to those countries

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2020 00:52

Banning any public gatherings of > 1000 people

WitchDoc · 06/03/2020 00:55

Banning flights from infected areas?

sort out a workaround for those on key meters so they can continue to have electricity to also go on the list.

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 01:12

What has happened here Confused

I found the explanation by chris whitty of the disease and imolications extremely helpful.

Not reassured by matt hancock on QT

AutumnRose1 · 06/03/2020 01:20

Is that the 1 hr 40 min video?

Could someone précis the helpful bits? Big ask, I know...

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 01:22

I have watched a fair chunk, and will possibly attempt when I've finished if someone else has not already by then Wink

Newjez · 06/03/2020 02:30

@WitchDoc

I don't think this is party political. It is a case of spend money now on prevention, or spend money later on recovery.
Personally I feel we need an element of both. I don't think we should shut everything. But we should shut everything non essential. We should fund to allow us to shut anything non essential. We should fund to boost everything essential.
This is a crisis, and everything we spend on prevention will save us on repair.

HRH2020 · 06/03/2020 05:29

@yorkshire thank you for the info.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/03/2020 06:30

I think a lot of selfish reckless individuals will be putting people’s wellbeing at risk by taking unnecessary chances and could exasperate the situation further unless severe measures are enforced.

I agree but really it should have been done before Feb. half-term.

Thunderpunt · 06/03/2020 07:00

Sorry if this has already been asked, but why is Diamond Princess showing 696 total cases now? Were 4 cases misdiagnosed?

tinytemper66 · 06/03/2020 07:03

Someone up the thread (last night) mentioned banning gatherings of over 1000 people...many secondary schools are that big.

Thunderpunt · 06/03/2020 07:06

New thread 14 is open sorry don't know how to link

hoovermyrug · 06/03/2020 07:37

Can we keep the politics OFF this thread. Go and start your own if you want to. It's neither helpful or informative. Thanks for the info Yorkshirepud
