Relatives would have to step up

And what if those relatives are NHS workers themselves. Or in a precarious job. Or already a full time carer for another family member.

Poorer people like full time carers or those on min wage arent the ones jumping on and off planes or going on ski trips Before we knew about this...not their fault and couldnt be helped.

But after................and then tell people who cant afford to self isolate.....tough you will have to even if that means homelessness (and yes ive seen this attitude n another thread) Resentment will start building before too long.

GalOopNorth · 05/03/2020 23:36

I agree springinsight, I just cannot understand why some action to blunt the peak of infection isn’t being taken. I understand why wholesale school closures can’t go ahead yet, but the failure to capture so many cases coming in, the lack of effort around reducing spread, for example in London is just mind blowing. Why not at least try!

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 23:36

Baby

How can people care for their own sick elderly when we can't be allowed to care for our own dc?

I don't feel we have to get to this point. I really don't.
We know the current no won't reflect reality.
We have case models. Take action right now. Severe action. Two, three weeks and I'm sure we would be much better off than elsewhere.

It's like throwing people under the bus to prove we will have it bad and need to take action.

I see China and Italy as the poor people under that bus! Take action now!

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 23:38

@screamer1

A couple of weeks ago it was estimated that the fatality rate was approx 1-2%. This has actually since been re-estimated to be around 3.5%. But since the figures seem so uncertain most people are still making estimates of effect using the original lower estimate of 1%.

Namechanger20183110 · 05/03/2020 23:38

@GalOopNorth Extra funding is being committed to trusts

They have already said that non emergency ops, consultations and routine ops will be postponed to free up capacity.

Military HCPs and facilities will be made available

They have outlined a plan for retired personnel to return - yes this is dubious, but it's a plan at the very least and should not be written off yet

This government is more than aware that they will have nowhere to hide , if the NHS collapses during the middle of us fighting this, the Tory party will be finished. And I say that as a labour supporter

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 23:39

@Namechanger20183110 Oh yes, we're doing excellent. Can you tell me when the 1st death amongst confirmed cases usual appears?

Wehttam · 05/03/2020 23:39

spring I posted it earlier this morning, someone had posted it on twitter and It just made sense. It was a typical Oprah Ah Ha moment.

What we do now might seem crazy and over the top but when it’s over we’ll wish we had done a lot more. It makes total fucking sense. The economy means zilch if it means sacrificing the health and lives of many.

MurrayTheMonk · 05/03/2020 23:41

Or like 6 out of 7 of my highly dependent service users with Physical
And mental health issues-they don't have any relatives that are involved in their lives at all. There is no one to step up to look after these people, Who have very complex needs, except my team who get paid just over minimum wage and who, as dedicated as they certainly are, won't be dragging themselves off their sick beds or leaving their families if it comes down to it.

We struggle to cover weekends as it is. As the manager I often end up working them in addition to my 9-5 week day contract so that we make our minimum staffing levels as there simply is no one else . It wouldn't take many of my team to be off for two weeks for the service to be very fucked.

Wehttam · 05/03/2020 23:41

For generations to come this could be a defining moment and we failed to act because of greed and the fact people missed a few holidays abroad

screamer1 · 05/03/2020 23:42

@Oakmaiden Chris witty said this morning that they're working off 1% fatality.

Wehttam · 05/03/2020 23:44

Murray your statement there should be ringing alarm bells all over the country.

Skierrdery · 05/03/2020 23:45

Namechanger. Not even Brexit could collapse the Tories. This is a Tory country whether you like it or not. We (You) appear to love the Toffs. No idea why, but that's what it is. It was ever thus.

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 23:45

Wehttam that quote has stuck with me too Actually I had prepped 2 weeks stock but looking all the reports and thinking about your quote I’m actually doing as much now while I’m able too, batch cooking etc

And taking the time to be present, and enjoying just pottering around town etc before it gets really bad out there

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 23:46

I don't know see it as greed.

In the my view stopping an outbreak will help the economy rather than letting it go like Italy?

We have two week wester break coming up.
I think shutting schools for two week prior plus imposing some travel bans and imposing ban, quarantine will ease pressure

MurrayTheMonk · 05/03/2020 23:47

Incidentally I sent one of my service users to a and e this evening with a suspected DVT. She went at 6, and had only got off the ambulance at 10, having sat outside in the ambulance bay strapped to a stretcher for four hours waiting to get in to a and e.

As she has severe mental
Health issues she couldn't handle the wait and ended up lashing out and gave the staff member with her what will end up being a nasty black eye.

We are nowhere near peak virus yet, and already you can't get into a and e for four hours as it is...

Namechanger20183110 · 05/03/2020 23:47

@WitchDoc I don't understand your point, are you saying that registering a single death in the first week is a disaster? I don't have any stats but I have been monitoring infection and death rates for many weeks, and quite a lot of countries reported deaths very early, in some cases against a lower infection number

Are you aware that the poor person who passed away today has been in and out of hospital recently with various serious ailments?

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 23:48

Murray. Everyone is fucked if your team takes covid to vulnerable patients.

Fourducksate · 05/03/2020 23:49

Actually, I would rather stay at home if I could, hospitals are the worst place to be when you are ill, or at least in my experience, unless you are so seriously ill you have no choice!

To be able to be at home and 'get through it' would be a better option,, my ds is 15, so would manage if both DH and I got it. However, if you have little ones, or dependents, it would be extremely difficult, especially if you have no family support near by.

That I think is what is worrying people. Of course it could just be mild! It's all the unknowns.

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 23:49

And I say that as a labour supporter

Well, this explains everything!

Seriously? Viruses don't care who's running the country, it doesn't care about politics & it doesn't care about what job you have & it doesn't care about you. Get a grip

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 23:50

Murray df was admitted to hospital for the last time in late Feb march. He waited for hours outside in ambulance, then inside in corridor.

MurrayTheMonk · 05/03/2020 23:51

And what's the choice? Leave them to starve, unmedicated and lying in their own faeces for days on end?
Turn off their peg feeds and leave them to it?
What's your advice then?
They might die from corona. They'll definitely die if no one is in work to care for them.

Wehttam · 05/03/2020 23:51

A four hour wait to get in to a&e 😳 poor lady and the poor staff member. Is it usual to wait that long to be admitted? On a Thursday evening?

Namechanger20183110 · 05/03/2020 23:51

I don't love the "Toffs", I'm just trying to get behind our government at a time when they need our support just as much as we need theirs.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 23:53

Four duck I agree.

Feb /March is when dc viral wheeze kicks in. I'd be terrified if any of us had to step foot in corona ridden NHS right now.

The cleaning issues are horrendous and gave us mrsa.

All I want is to be able to take dc out of school and myself off work from now until May.
