I have to agree with GalOopNorth

I'm really worried my dh and I will get it at the same time. We have no help, no family to pitch in with two kids to look after.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 22:57

Shangai,.
Italy have got to a horrendous state to close schools.

Why do we have to wait until our elderly are dying at awful rates before we take the similar measures.

We were talking about cold scientific doctors. And how they make decisions.

I'm wondering who told Boris to let this thing burn through?

Cold hard science tells us on one hand.
Shut everything. Stop the virus. Save lives.

The other says. Let it run its course.

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2020 22:58

Matt Hancock on QT seems to be the be giving a very 'keep calm and carry on' message.

We'll see soon enough in sure whether the 'it won't get us, we're British' attitude works or not.

It does seem to be a rather different approach though to some other countries.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 22:58

Whitty is the public face of public health beside Boris and Hancock,
but there will be COBRA and several other advisers & politiicans involved

However, as the plaque on President Harry Truman's desk said:
"The buck stops here"

GalOopNorth · 05/03/2020 22:59

This is a little hard to decifer, but I think it is showing that flu hospitalisations are now above the baseline assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/870503/Weekly_national_influenza_report_week_10_2020.pdf

Wonder whether any of these are undetected Covid-19?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 23:01

Italy have closed schools after nearly 4000 cases, 150 deaths and still rising

If the UK ever gets in such a state, the pressure on Boris to do likewise would be enormous
We are thankfully far from that atm
Being an island may yet save us from that stage

ShanghaiDiva · 05/03/2020 23:01

@Wehttam
Yes, spring festival movement was a complete nightmare with the virus as it spread everywhere. As you say hindsight is a wonderful thing!

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 23:02

@BigChocFrenzy The UK WILL close all schools, colleges & universities. They are just delaying the inevitable because of the economy

Awkward1 · 05/03/2020 23:04

Shit I really hope that isn't true about lung and immune system damage.
dd2 has already V 4 times now since nov. Then we had a very nasty 'flu in dec...
This is why they shouldn't have let it go as you can't know the long term impact.

Under 5 have a weaker immune system

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 23:04

For goodness sake, a grown woman in her 30’s has shared this on fb and commented about how this is all she need to know about cornavirus as she’s got no time for the news

www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/51342366?at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D&at_custom2=facebook_page&at_custom3=BBC+Family+%26+Education+News&at_custom4=0A3BDCA6-5DA7-11EA-A24A-8DCAC28169F1&at_medium=custom7&at_campaign=64&fbclid=IwAR2f4M7z8IpkBRdbAdHk4NlZId0i5JVmtZp64TaKgrYxsyRwb5uMtRNpr0A

AutumnRose1 · 05/03/2020 23:04

But the number of healthcare staff we lose if we close primary schools....everyone’s due on holiday soon anyway.

I can see the “closing the borders” argument but it all depends if you’re saving lives or the economy.

furrytoebean · 05/03/2020 23:06

@GalOopNorth
Have I understood the fludetector part of that report properly that they are analysing who is searching for flu like symptoms on google Confused
I don't know how I feel about that at all.

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 23:06

BigChocFrenzy Unfortunately being a island won’t help us as it could have done while everyone’s still hoping on planes every 5 minutes

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 23:09

AutumnRose1 If provisions were put into place for onsite crèches for the time being then we won’t lose healthcare staff and actually teachers from schools could help run these as well as being able to bring their own children with them

GalOopNorth · 05/03/2020 23:09

That’s just the last graph I think. Google searches are a fairly common way of gathering Big Data about what is going on these days - a much better predictor (in terms of keeping track of a moving epidemic) than relying on patients visiting their GPs apparently, as thy always lags by a week or so.

But the top bit I think is based on hospital admissions.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 23:10

I hope not, witch
because many people and businesses would be destroyed financially

  • and for that decision to be made would mean the UK had already suffered dreadful loss of life

I criticise the govt because of:

its late engagement,
language of minimisation,
irresponsible encouragement of handshakes
not banning large public gatherings & shows
not agreeing to pay salaries in full for those told to self-isolate
inadequate quarantine
inadequate checks on flights from high risk countries
running down NHS and public health capacity
.....

However, I don't criticise them for not closing schools & unis, not at this stage

LambriniSocialist · 05/03/2020 23:10

What a load of contrived bollocks that Daily Mail piece is. I'm not doubting that guy suffered with it, but the way that is written is laughable!

Namechanger20183110 · 05/03/2020 23:11

@GalOopNorth you are completely catastrophising. Firstly, the patients who test positive that are told to recover at home will be risk assessed in that they are not going to be old and/or have underlying conditions. It has been shown in China and Italy that in low-risk patients, mild means mild and the risks of symptoms escalating are low. more than 50% of Italy's affected patients are currently at home and they are not the patients who are dying.

They are not going to send high risk patients home ie the elderly and those with existing conditions, come on. If you read the government's plan today re the NHS, the information they shared is that they have 30 hospitals around the country already on standby, specifically chosen to provide beds and treatment. They will find and make space for affected patients If they need more then they will utilise more hospitals nationally.

I would like to know how some of you are so sure that they have already run out of beds when we only have 115 cases and a big proportion of these have recovered and/or are recovering at home?

stairway · 05/03/2020 23:11

Being an Island didn’t stop the Spanish flu. We are following behind France at the moment, that will give us an idea of what to expect in the UK.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 23:11

Creme

My fear is that right now, the numbers will make sense for closure. But, This is based on unseen numbers that I couldn't tell you based on my totally un calculated sense that it's in our communities and 111 wouldn't test for it because people presenting with symptoms didn't follow a strict criteria that didn't make any sense.

I believe the chain of connection we have right now particularly in schools and education settings is exposing us to covid.
We are sending students out to work placements among the young and elderly whilst other students are sent home to isolate, staff fly in from Northern Italy not feeling well but 111 won't test, they self isolate on their own initiative but only after being at school for days.

Childs dad's wife's sister has it and so and so on and so on. And students are not hygienic. The systems they use to pay are not hygienic. Unless you sit in front of students it's hard to imagine how un hygienic they are!! They don't wash their hands before eating! They touch the pre payment systems.

Like Italy.I do believe right now covid is out there in enough numbers to shut schools etc. But we don't have these no to our finger tips because they won't test for it and now it's in hospitals.

In London and Liverpool.

I don't think someone will on the the tube can sit and be aware of their hand...

It's all a nonsense. Take action now.

As I said earlier, those who have presented with symptoms but 111 won't test. Ask mp for surgery to talk about the system.

Ask Chris for personal chat about it... It's a very Erin brocacavitch water moment.

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 23:12

Iran, Italy, Greece, places in the US & other countries worst hit have already done this @AutumnRose1
It will happen here too.

Namechanger20183110 · 05/03/2020 23:13

@LambriniSocialist yes, a retrospective account of how he felt day by day, written from memory a few weeks later. Very accurate I'm sure(!)

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 23:13

Stair, Spanish flu came through ports and ships.

And lack of instant information.

We have information.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 23:14

"Under 5 have a weaker immune system"

Statistics indicate children are at very very low risk of serious harm if they catch COVID,
providing they aren't vulnerable because of comorbidities like heart or lung disease, or diabetes
