Is there a gender difference and smoking at play again here? 36% men smoke in South Korea bit only 4.3% of the women.

Newleafinspring · 04/03/2020 16:24

I am here in UK, but I have followed the news about this coronavirus for very long time and read the whole WHO report, they believe the Chinese figure. And I have relatives in China, not in Wuhan, I know they have been back to work as there are 0 cases in their province for a while.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 04/03/2020 16:24

WHO live Q and A just now

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 04/03/2020 16:25

What're the obesity figures like in s korea for each sex? I've seen how much hyper-femininity is pushed there, which I guessed might impact female obesity? Might explain a difference in smoking too.

HotSince82 · 04/03/2020 16:26

I'm thinking of quarantining the family as from tomorrow.
Big shop tonight wearing gloves then no more non essential leaving the house. No school, I will continue to work with hygiene precautions.
I just feel its sensible in the current climate, all things considered.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 16:27

HotSince that is a big step. Will you home school? (No idea how old your dc are)

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 16:28

@Blueberryham do you mean the Korea figures? They’re published by the South Korean government.

RevolutionofourTime · 04/03/2020 16:28

@ShanghaiDiva 👋 yes we’re back in HK. The panic buying seems to have subsided, supermarkets are no longer empty, and France (where we were for a month) has cases rising steadily, so we figured we may as well go home where it’s easier to self isolate.

Thankfully we were not on the CP flight with the Bristol man who went on to Shenzhen and was diagnosed on arrival. The UK is now exporting cases over to China...

peridito · 04/03/2020 16:30

Another here not happy about the

As of today, due to the number of new cases, we will no longer be publishing information on the location of each new case.

Instead, this information will be published in a consolidated format once a week. This will be published on Friday. Regions will continue to be told as and when they have confirmed cases

would putting areas on daily update really cause so much extra work ?.

Skyejuly · 04/03/2020 16:31

I think it's odd they are not releasing location yet. I expect some new cases in new counties rather than clusters which suggests it us more places than we expect.

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 16:31

@BeyondMymymymyCorona there’s only a one point average BMI difference between men and women in South Korea, so it’s probably not relevant. Why do you think obesity would make such a difference? I haven’t seen anything like that

I don't trust the government and I live on tje Wirral, a high school closed here yesterday. My mum is 64 with respiratory compromisation, I don't feel its sensible to wait any longer.
As for homeschooling, I hope to reassess in one week and see where we go from there regarding that.
Im not willing to wait for the government to determine what steps I should take when this is clearly a population control issue.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/03/2020 16:34

Yes, dh says it’s not too bad in HK although he is living in a hotel and rapidly running out of films to watch at the weekend.
Do you have online learning until after Easter?

danadas · 04/03/2020 16:35

My sons school closed yesterday afternoon following a parent of a pupil testing positive. They are re-opening Friday following a deep clean of the school but it looks like there are a fair few parents reluctant to send them back Friday.

Nameisthegame · 04/03/2020 16:35

Anyone else watched/watching pandemic in explained on Netflix 😬

Newleafinspring · 04/03/2020 16:36

Based on current cases, I don't think it is realistic to close school, work etc. But, more can be done for contain the virus. For example, anyone has temperature and coughs to stay at home? School promote washing hand? Close contact with confirmed cases to stay at home? Cancel big indoor events? Clean public area the points to be touched oftern, like door handles ?

If Government put more effort to contain, for sure, people can think of lots to do to contain, and this will save us more trouble later. At the moment, government's attitude looks like, it's impossible to contain, then let it to be.

My son is at st Anselms, he's not going back tomorrow.

middleager · 04/03/2020 16:37

Name I might watch that.
I watched Contagion yesterday Shock

Nameisthegame · 04/03/2020 16:38

It was published in November last year 😬 I wouldn’t watch if your feeling anxious.

Kuponut · 04/03/2020 16:38

Mentioned on the last thread my reservations about our uni placements... now it transpires one of our cohort is skiving lectures at the moment - and on holiday in Italy. Obviously if skiving, won't be self-isolating when she comes back - so will be going straight into our lectures and into schools/carehomes.

I've sent a quiet email to one of our lecturers just to let them know cos that possibility really concerns me - might make me an evil cowbag which I'm worried as hell about - but can't face living with the knowledge I didn't act if anything DID happen.

cologne4711 · 04/03/2020 16:39

Their close contacts are being followed up by Public Health England

I can see some sort of telephone scam developing out of this. Phone people, say they've been in close contact with a victim, and then something fraudulent ensues.

We had a call about loft insulation yesterday which was right out of the scam playbook.
