OP posts:

@frillseeking you don't even know of those videos of people being dragged from their homes are recent videos or not tbh they have no time stamp - so could be a video from anywhere at any time

TheVanguardSix · 10/02/2020 17:33

I live in China and the hysteria in the U.K. is something to behold.

I'll just fix that for you:

I live in China and the hysteria stirred up by the U.K. media is something to behold.

BatShite · 10/02/2020 17:35

Am sure you will be fine. I would have prob panicked if back in the baby days though, used to freak out about a lot of things then..

BatShite · 10/02/2020 17:40

Just read the article about kids..Fantastic that it seems to be leaving kids alone really so far. Wish more viruses and such would do that tbh, I would much rather be ill than my kids..

frillseeking · 10/02/2020 17:44

Fair point kapten. I wonder what would justify people being forcibly taken from their homes though, whenever or wherever it was.

Biancadelrioisback · 10/02/2020 17:48

FFS, it's competitive layed back-ness on here isn't it.

Pah, OP you're worried? How pathetic! You're concerned for yours and your families health? Pah! I snogged all 8 people in the UK with coronavirus AND I've just flown back from Wuhan. I'm not even slightly worried. You're such a drama queen 🙄

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 17:49

You are not being at all unreasonable not to want you or your children to get this dose. Lethal or not, it's bloody miserable to have a hacking cough, potentially pneumonia, a fever, maybe some vomiting and diarrhoea (based on a youtube video someone posted from a doctor about one patient's symptoms). Who the fuck in their right mind would glibly say - 'ah, sure, I don't care about this old coronavirus'.
You're not being at all hysterical. I hate being sick.

People love to be the big brave level-headed nincompoops, poo-pooing legitimate concerns everyone has of trying to avoid contracting what sounds like a nasty virus and a potentially lethal one at that.

goldfinchfan · 10/02/2020 17:49

I don't know anyone panicking here in the UK

we have the weather and the idiot Prime Minister to panic about.

But taking safe precautions to not get infected is a good idea.
Any flu is horrible and it is still early days for this one.

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 17:51

FFS, it's competitive layed back-ness on here isn't it.

Cross-posted with you! Exactly my thoughts. Everyone wants to be Mr. Cool

StrangeLookingParasite · 10/02/2020 17:51

good hygiene practice can’t hurt.

Using too much antibac stuff absolutely can hurt. Antibiotic resistance is a thing.

1forsorrow · 10/02/2020 17:52

Maybe is China had panicked a bit sooner they could have controlled it. Nothing clever about sneering at people who just want to protect their families.

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 17:54

Using too much antibac stuff absolutely can hurt. Antibiotic resistance is a thing.
Antibacterial gels/sprays are not antibiotics.

KaptenKrusty · 10/02/2020 17:55

@frillseeking yeah who knows - I mean China aren't exactly known for their amazing Human Rights - people are silenced all the time, their internet is heavily monitored - if they don't like what your saying they will shut you down - people go "missing" etc - the people being dragged out is not, I feel, a surprising thing to see though (sadly)

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 10/02/2020 17:56

People are confusing concern about an as yet unpredictable threat with panic and hysteria which is an overreaction to a minor or insignificant threat.

This is a new virus which is not yet understood as therefore it is sensible to be concerned about it.

Hysteria is a misogynistic word and should be consigned to history.

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 17:57

I've had pneumonia and I can tell you, that before I went into a coma, it was one painful motherfucker. I could neither lie down nor sit up, I was in so much pain. Even my skin felt sore to touch.
Nobody wants to get this shit.
And nobody's being hysterical. It's just the equivalent of small-talk. It's not exactly Henny Penny running around saying the sky is going to fall.
It's people saying - fuck that for a game of soldiers - how can I best avoid getting this bloody thing.

MimiLaRue · 10/02/2020 17:58

Girl, I live in Brighton too and I'm not worried.

I even have a cold at the moment- sore throat, cough etc Its just a cold.
Or it might be coronavirus I dont know- but either way I'm not having issues breathing and feel absolutely fine in myself so I'm not worried.

I think you need to relax- the media has hyped this up to be a world wide plague and it isn't. I know it can be serious in the elderly and the immune compromised but so can ALOT of illnesses like the flu. Flu kills millions world wide each year yet we arent all panicking about catching that. Just wash your hands regularly and eat well and get lots of rest. Trust your immune system and trust your body- it has a highly sophisticated and effective method of keeping you healthy. Take some probiotics for extra immunity- good gut bacteria helps immunity. You'll be fine.

justasking111 · 10/02/2020 17:59

My family over there have had the internet, social media shut down before now, they are used to it. The chinese do lie, they also use bots to spread disinformation, not sure they have found mumsnet yet but who knows. All governments lie to avoid panic and fear. It aint good for the economy when you think about it.

singme · 10/02/2020 18:01

I don’t think it’s competitive laid backness necessarily if people with jobs not in contact with those recently returned from areas with the virus are keeping things in perspective. Meanwhile healthcare workers, many pregnant or with small children, are going to work everyday with the possibility that they will be dealing with a patient with coronavirus. Obviously they will have personal protective equipment if the risk is known, but this may not be the case. I’m not saying it is wrong to be worried, just that we need to be sensible, take precautions but ultimately live our lives. I can understand why you are worried though OP and hoping that we will get more (reassuring) evidence about the risk to children soon!

Makinganewthinghappen · 10/02/2020 18:02

Nothing - me too pneumonia and sepsis - I really don’t want to revisit that.

I keep reading so much crap on here ! I was a totally healthy 30 year old - in the morning I was fine going to nativity plays and doing Christmas shopping that evening I suddenly collapsed out of nowhere. Never had a temperature, never had a cough - nothing.

I know most of the people collapsing in the streets in China from pneumonia are fake but tbh that’s exactly what happened to me.

MimiLaRue · 10/02/2020 18:08

FFS, it's competitive layed back-ness on here isn't it

No it isn't but whats the alternative then? people are saying take sensible precautions like hand washing and not to panic. What do you suggest people do? lock themselves indoors, duct tape the windows shut and sit rocking back and forth in the corner whilst ringing a leper bell and screaming?

There is NOTHING you can do apart from good hand hygiene to prevent yourself catching a virus. Anti bac hand wash wont work because its not bacteria, its viral. Panic and hysteria helps noone and actually, studies have shown that stress lowers your immune system so panic will make you MORE vulnerable, not help you. We need to stay vigilant but not alarmist- its helping absolutely noone.

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 18:10

Ye, ambulance crew when they took my obs, said they were surprised I was still conscious! But I'm a tough old bird lol. The dead walking.

BMW6 · 10/02/2020 18:14

Applauds Mimi

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 18:18

Well I hope you're all as blasé about it if you do get it. It sounds like a nasty infection. I certainly don't want it. Almost died from last dose I had (family called over from my home country etc.). So it's not just the sniffles I'm worried about.
Anyway, it's good to talk, and voice your concerns - rather than having them swilling around in your head.

Of course there's not much we can do. I'd feel stupid going around wearing a mask, but the little shop across the road from me is a busy little spot, so say if the owner got it, he'd have half of North London infected in a week lol. So ye, hand washing. Avoiding people coughing. But if it's infectious when you're not yet showing symptoms, then I'd suggest it is in fact airborne, as you wouldn't be coughing droplets at that stage.

Meh. It's something I'm keeping abreast of without getting panicked.

Biancadelrioisback · 10/02/2020 18:20

Absolutely not Mimi but let's not be dicks to those who are worried? Not saying you are but half the responses are just telling OP to not panic and that China is laughing at us. Way to make people feel like shit.
It's absolutely fine to worry. It's good to keep things in perspective but it's not okay to mock people for how they feel or try and make OP feel foolish which many people on here are doing.

MimiLaRue · 10/02/2020 18:24

Meh. It's something I'm keeping abreast of without getting panicked

But thats what I'm saying- this is the best approach! stay informed, educated but also calm. Panic and worry solves absolutely nothing except making you feel awful and exhausted. Deep breaths everyone and wash hands well with soap and hot water.
