My GP, at the bottom of my road. WIBU to panic now? I have 2 young kids (1 baby.) I’m more concerned about them... 😕

It's absolutely fine to worry. It's good to keep things in perspective but it's not okay to mock people

I havent mocked anyone- I'm responding to the claim that its a "laid back competition"- which is just as mocking and criticising people for not being in a blind panic. Panic never solved anything. Its fine to be worried but scaremongering is not fine.

FriedasCarLoad · 10/02/2020 18:27

@Introvertedbuthappy
I live in China and the hysteria in the U.K. is something to behold.

Presumably you're not beholding it in the UK, if you're in China? I actually live in the UK and haven't seen any hysteria.

Maybe you just have really really good eyesight to see from China what I can't see right in front of me? Confused

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 18:28

Lol @FriedasCarLoad

Bunnyfuller · 10/02/2020 18:30

Here’s the thing....

Common sense goes with this is a mild flu in most cases, v low mortality (when compared to usual flu especially) so...

Why the fuck are all the grown ups behaving as though it isn’t? Why implement a law that essentially says it’s a massive threat, but in the same breath put risk to individuals low? Why invest govt funds into adverts to protect etc if it was ok for coach drivers to be in a bus with possible carriers without wearing PPE? Why are they preparing isolation pods and specialist centres?

I’ve ignored the DM hype but the sciencey official stuff isn’t matching with the nothing to worry about narrative. Why don’t we have this every year for flu season?

At what point do we assume we may have inadvertently possibly had contact with it? Do we know who used the supermarket trolley before us? Or the door into the shop?

Either stop the bloody overreaction or give a few more facts away!

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 18:31

Nobody is scaremongering. The OP simply started a thread saying it was literally on her street! She was probably thinking - SHIT! As would I, if for example my little man in the shop across the road got it.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 10/02/2020 18:34

The facts are not established, that is why there is a discrepancy.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/02/2020 18:34

If you want to live longer, put down the burger and go for a run. It'll be heart disease or cancer that gets you.

aintnothinbutagstring · 10/02/2020 18:34

Why do people keep comparing it to the flu? Mortality from the flu is anywhere from 0.05 to 0.2, mortality from coronavirus is twenty times that. We have a new vaccine created each year to curb the spread of flu, there is no vaccine or treatment yet for coronavirus. And it's all very well saying oh well it only affects immunocompromised, but I'm sure most families have a number of those to be worried about. I think it is good to be aware and take necessary precautions, I'd worry more if I lived in a less developed country without the systems in place to deal with a potential pandemic. The NHS does have systems to deal with this type of thing.

Parker231 · 10/02/2020 18:35

The legislation regarding the threat to the public is a legal issue as some people in quarantine in the Wirral did not want to stay. The legislation gives the government powers to retain them - it does not mean the risk of a widespread number of cases of the virus has increased. It is still low.

Biancadelrioisback · 10/02/2020 18:38

Mimi I specifically said that I wasn't referring to you but to the general "you" as in, the people on this and other threads.

dayowl · 10/02/2020 18:38

I would be worried myself tbh, I’d stay informed about what is happening But I wouldn’t let it worry me too much

tenredthings · 10/02/2020 18:40

You'd get better treatment if you caught it now. You'd probably get amazing attention compared to in a few months when the hospitals may be overwhelmed.

justdeckingthehalls1 · 10/02/2020 18:41

The authors of this study

www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-2019-nCoV-severity-10-02-2020.pdf

are suggesting 60-70% infection rates and 1% death rate. That's 40+ million infections and nearly half a million deaths in just the U.K. I think a degree of worry is fairly sensible at this stage.

Parker231 · 10/02/2020 18:41

From Gov.uk - Based on the World Health Organization’s declaration that this is a public health emergency of international concern, the UK Chief Medical Officers have raised the risk to the public from low to moderate. This permits the government to plan for all eventualities. The risk to individuals remains low.

billybear · 10/02/2020 18:42

dads neighbour is due back from the wirrel on thursday;him his mum and wife have been in quanentine, dad lives in a small culdesac, dad is very frail very ill he is dreading the man coming home as he usually trots up and down the street for hours yapping on his mobile.general view of his neighbours keep away from them

Biancadelrioisback · 10/02/2020 18:44

The thing is, people do worry about the flu, that's why many take steps to prevent it. That's why we (generally) have better hygiene practices in winter and why many people have the flu vaccination. That's also why we encourage people to stay home and not spread it around.
This is a new virus that we a) don't have a cure for b) don't know how it spreads and c) don't know how/if it will evolve. Those things alone are enough to be concerning.

NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 18:46

I know people tend to look down their noses at Sky News, but I find their coverage of these sorts of things to be quite good usually. They balance the latest news, with interviews with experts. So they'll have for example report of numbers of cases and where they are etc., what the authorities are doing (e.g. trying to contact people who have come in contact with an infected person), then they'll have the latest WHO press conference, then they'll have some sort of expert on infectious diseases, or someone from Public Health England etc. They're good at stating things like the symptoms, what to do in the event you've come in contact with someone who has it etc.

MrsKypp · 10/02/2020 18:47

I am extremely worried about catching the novel coronavirus because I have severe asthma.

A common cold can give me bronchitis and make me ill for a couple of months. This often happens. I only survive due to antibiotics, steroids and strong medication. That is after a simple common cold...

I take steroids and therefore have low immunity.

I find it frightening how strong and healthy people are so uncaring about those of us with conditions that put us at high risk. People not taking it seriously means they are not careful enough regarding efforts to prevent further infection.

I don't believe the official statistics because China is no longer in a position to know enough to have an accurate overview, let alone the fact that it's not a country that likes to reveal things like that anyway. I know several Chinese people and they are so lovely and kind. It's utterly heartbreaking what's going on in this horrific pandemic.

The NHS is coping right now, but has limited ventilators and intensive care facilities. I dread the coming weeks.

waterlego · 10/02/2020 18:48

OP, my good friend is a patient at that surgery. She is also a nurse (at a different surgery) and is not panicking yet, which reassures me!

coconuttelegraph · 10/02/2020 18:49

Where are you getting your information from? I don't think I've had an actual conversation with anyone about this, I'd question your sources if they are telling you there's even mild disquiet, that's my experience anyway.

Febalready · 10/02/2020 18:53

Trust your immune system and trust your body- it has a highly sophisticated and effective method of keeping you healthy. Take some probiotics for extra immunity- good gut bacteria helps immunity.
Mimi that made me smile because it's such a Brighton response.
I agree there isn't any point in panicking although I do understand OPs concerns.

BlimeyCalmDown · 10/02/2020 18:54

Now we all know where you live! Hmm

wheresmymojo · 10/02/2020 18:55

I've been following it very closely including reading all the medical reports published.

Children don't catch it as often as adults and when they do they tend to get the milder end of it (so a bit like having the flu).

There are lots of reasons to worry about this Coronavirus (and the impact if it spreads across the UK) but don't worry about the children.

I think there is some hysteria. A colleague of mine has had to return early from holiday because the cruise ship he was meant to be boarding is one of the ones with quarantined passengers. He didn’t even get on the boat or anywhere near it, just stayed a couple of nights in a Japanese hotel until he could get a plane back to the U.K. but despite that people at work are panicking about sitting near him and insisting personnel shouldn’t let him return to work for two weeks.
