@paintedfences

This is not what the WHO organisation are saying as of today

The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through contact with an infected person through respiratory droplets generated when a person, for example, coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose

@Justaboy

Quoting ZeroHedge - something that makes the Mail look like the bastion of truth, moderation and objectivity!

Or as Wikipedia describe it,
Over time, Zero Hedge expanded into non-financial analysis,[c] advocating what CNN Business called an anti-establishment and conspiratorial worldview, and which has been associated with alt-right views,[4][11] and a pro-Russian bias.[12][13][14] Other sources describe Zero Hedge as libertarian.[3][4] Zero Hedge's non-financial commentary has led to a number of § Site bans by various global social media platforms, some of which have been overturned (e.g. 2019 Facebook ban),[15] while others remain (e.g. 2020 Twitter ban).[4]

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily
Thanks for asking after me! We are in touch with friends back in China, no problems with communication. There are more restrictions re movements and leaving your compound, but morale is still okay- Upper lips stiff and chins up!
I am sure the numbers of cases and deaths are higher, but I think just monitoring the situation is an administrative nightmare. Most brits have no idea what it’s like to live in a country with a massive population. There are new controls re leaving compounds but will not be introduced just yet, as need to be translated into other languages: mgt of the situation is not just about hospitals, but also self quarantine especially as many Chinese are now coming back from the extended holiday.
Some mumsnetters seem quick to jump to conclusions of a cover up, but there is little that can be done : quarantine and hygiene. I think the real issue is that the UK govt has not taken the action many would like to see eg close the borders to people coming from China. Australia did this days ago. Countries have the same information and decide what action to take: be critical of Boris et al rather than the Chinese govt. (btw this is not directed at you personally, rather a general comment)

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 12/02/2020 00:39

I’m glad you and your friends are keeping your chin up. It must get more difficult for them as time passes. I know it sounds silly but I’m out at least once a day, with my dogs and the thought of being stuck indoors for so long gives me the horrors! Don’t get me wrong, I’d do it, but blimey. Actually, I wonder how people are exercising their dogs? picturing a dog let out of a widow, attached to a very very long extendable lead, then being reeled back in. I may be overthinking this. 😁

ShanghaiDiva · 12/02/2020 01:11

You are quite right.it’S a real problem for people with dogs.

WhoWants2Know · 12/02/2020 07:16

It's been a couple of days, but I did see an article specifically about issues related to the dogs. In some cases they just have to stay indoors with the owners, but there is also an issue with strays where their owners were suddenly taken to hospital and the dogs were left to roam.

EnidBlyton · 12/02/2020 07:25

oh i couldnt self isolate if it meant i couldnt walk my dog Shock

NaturalBornWoman · 12/02/2020 08:00

oh i couldnt self isolate if it meant i couldnt walk my dog shock

And this is how we'll all get it. Ridiculous people.

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/02/2020 08:01

oh i couldnt self isolate if it meant i couldnt walk my dog shock

I bloody hope that was supposed to be a joke

Icecreamdiva · 12/02/2020 08:33

The dog walking thing is why hospital/medical staff would be expected to stay on site rather than go home. For some people they would have to walk their dog. Another person would ‘have’ to pick up their DC from the grandparents. I might ‘have’ to drop groceries round to my housebound parent at some point or stop at the petrol station. All these things are undoubtedly important but increase the risk of spreading the virus.

leopardandspots · 12/02/2020 08:57

It's quite hard to figure out the facts from the press. I've been trying to summarise it. Most seems to be precautionary:

Schools closed as precaution:

Hangleton primary
Varndean
Portslade Academy
Bevendean Primary
Cottesmore St Mary’s?

Also closed:
County Oak medical centres x2

Patcham Nursing Home closed to visitors.

Other places where infected man visited include:
Grenadier pub
Yoga class at ? - unconfirmed?

A&E worker at Worthing Hospital confirmed?

University of Sussex- unconfirmed.

Steve Walsh who was the Singapore and skiing man did volunteer with the Scout Movement but not been to their meetings since his return to the UK.

EnidBlyton · 12/02/2020 09:10

But dog walking does not involve being in an enclosed space or sneezing over others

GherkinTherapy · 12/02/2020 09:28

The schools aren't actually closed, they have just sent letters to the parents advising that someone from the school is in self isolation.

Justaboy · 12/02/2020 09:36

Aridane I did wonder if someone might see the sarcasim with the reference to that article;!

onalongsabbatical · 12/02/2020 09:37

@EnidBlyton the thing is, if an individual with a dog is asked to self-isolate they won't be able to argue the toss, they'll be asked to stay at home for 14 days with no exceptions, no little toddles out for the dog, nada.

purpleboy · 12/02/2020 09:44

@GherkinTherapy the school local to us is closed and has been since Monday. Due to reopen tomorrow after doing a deep clean

purpleboy · 12/02/2020 09:45

@littlepeaegg how's your DD doing? I've been thinking about you. Hoping your all ok x

SapphosRock · 12/02/2020 09:47

My DC are at school in Brighton and just received the following email from the Head. It's reassuring there have been no more confirmed cases but still feeling anxious that many might be passing it on in the incubation period.

Dear Parents and Carers,

I expect there are one or two of you who have felt a little anxious about the ongoing news items about the Coronavirus in Brighton. My understanding is that those who may have the virus have been isolated and the usual precautionary measures have taken place. I have received reassuring regular updates and information from the Brighton and Hove Council and thought it would be helpful to share with you the information they have sent to me. Please see below:

What is the coronavirus?

The 2019 Novel Coronavirus has been spreading since it was first reported in December 2019.

Symptoms include fever and respiratory symptoms including coughing and shortness of breath. Generally, coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

If you develop these symptoms and have recently travelled to an area where the coronavirus is being widely reported or believe you may have come in contact with the virus then you should stay indoors and call NHS 111 informing them of the details linking you to the virus.

A case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Brighton & Hove?

One individual from Brighton & Hove tested positive on Thursday 6 February and is in a London hospital where they are being well cared for.

The new case is a known contact of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France. Where this person lives has not been confirmed by the Chief Medical Officer.

Public Health England is the lead organisation responding to the situation. Public Health England is working with partner organisations to take measures to prevent any possible further spread of the virus.

Anyone who may have been in contact with the virus is currently being identified and will be contacted directly by Public Health England.

What should I do?

If you do feel unwell having travelled to the UK from mainland China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the last 14 days, then you should stay indoors and call NHS 111, even if symptoms are mild.

If you have travelled from Wuhan or Hubei province in the last 14 days then you should stay indoors and avoid contact with others as you would with flu, and call NHS 111 informing them of your symptoms and inform them of your recent travel to the city.

Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:

· Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.

· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

· Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.

· You can find the latest information and advice from Public Health England at www.gov.uk/coronavirus

If you are feeling unwell and have not been contacted by Public Health England, then there is no need for concern.

You should continue to treat your symptoms as usual for seasonal flu or a common cold. If you feel unwell and do not know what you should do, then call NHS 111.

GherkinTherapy · 12/02/2020 10:02

Ahh ok purpleboy I'm only getting my info from The Guardian's live coronavirus updates. Do you know if any other schools in Brighton are closed?

purpleboy · 12/02/2020 10:54

No gherkin I'm in a south coast town further down from Brighton. Think 3 kids have fallen ill after recently coming back from affected regions. Not had any update as to if they have tested positive or not yet.

littlepeaegg · 12/02/2020 12:00

@GherkinTherapy my sons school has been shut all week

littlepeaegg · 12/02/2020 12:02

@purpleboy thank you! We are okay. We are still in isolation. We aren't allowed out until the family get their results back... school is still shut until further notice. My child is still poorly with a cough and fever

purpleboy · 12/02/2020 12:08

@littlepeaegg I've got everything crossed for you, really hope it turns out to be nothing 🤞🏼

Thymelord · 12/02/2020 12:21

That ridiculous video up thread, referring to the mass burning of bodies, is easily debunked.

There are huge steel mills located in Wuhan, belonging to China Baowu Steel, the second largest producer of steel in the WORLD. They are burning coke at the steel works in order to prevent the iron inside the kilns from solidifying, which is producing these noted levels of sulfur dioxide.
