My GP, at the bottom of my road. WIBU to panic now? I have 2 young kids (1 baby.) I’m more concerned about them... 😕

As a post said up there please be aware that social media isn’t real life. There’s plenty of food but prices are up. There was panic buying when it was CNY but plenty to make meals from. My online deliveries still come but I need to go to the gate to collect. Restaurants and bars are still open.

justasking111 · 10/02/2020 16:13

Last year my OH and my DS ended up in hospital with the flu, one with pleurisy. I did not get it because I do have the jab each year.

Keep washing hands, wear gloves when out and about and bung them in the machine. The chinese uni. students are wearing masks which does frighten people when they are out and about.

Introvertedbuthappy · 10/02/2020 16:15

As someone also posted up thread the media aren’t posting the footage of people still eating out here or doing the weekly shop. That doesn’t sell papers.

GloGirl · 10/02/2020 16:15

Just to explain I clicked YANBU to be worried about something you've been told for weeks in big bold news headlines is a pandemic and is now on your street.

That said, the main concern is that it's a virus that is difficult to treat if your immunity/health is already poor. Should you be worried? I guess not.

Would I be in your shoes? Probably yes. You are being groomed by the media to be hysterical about it. Take it easy on yourself and your young family. Remind yourself the flu is dangerous and you manage ok with those risks and concerns. Do whatever you need to do to feel comfortable and at ease with the current concerns.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 16:17

Is it? I read it was droplet so only when close (1 to 2m) to an infected person.

They now believe aerosol transmission is possible.

Camomila · 10/02/2020 16:19

Hi OP I'm also from that part of Brighton and have a 2 week old so I can undertand why you are worried, but DC seem to be getting it less severely which is good.

I still have to go outside (nursery, supermarket etc) I'm just washing my hands a lot and getting DS1 to wash his. Tbh I'm more worried about the baby catching the cough/cold we've got than the coronavirus!

JinglingHellsBells · 10/02/2020 16:20

No one knows what the real death rates are.

China is withholding a lot of information.

It is probably a lot worse than we hear on the news.

I know people living in China and they are semi-quarantined, even though they are not in the cities we hear of on the news.

Dragonembroidery · 10/02/2020 16:25

Wash hands, use plenty of antibacterial products, wipes, spray etc and only use card payments. Cash is not v clean.
I would eat out less, if at all.
Careful with petrol pumps too. I read somewhere that they have more bacteria than toilet seats. Use antibacterial hand gel.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 16:27

Panicking will not help you in any way. Being sensible and taking sensible precautions will help.

Dragonembroidery · 10/02/2020 16:29

Wash at 60 degrees to kill bacteria or use fabric detergent additional anti bac from dettol.
This one is a bit OCD - take items from back of shelf or at least not front one, in supermarket. Buy plastic wrapped fruit and veg.

JinglingHellsBells · 10/02/2020 16:29

Cash is not v clean Who says?
Key pads for withdrawing cash or paying with a CC are dirtier that your toilet bowl. They are filthy. By all means swipe to pay but not using a PIN.

JinglingHellsBells · 10/02/2020 16:30

@Dragonembroidery No one needs Dettol in their laundry. Washing powder and heat kill germs and the minute you take your washing out of the machine it gets bacteria all over it again from your house.

Spodge · 10/02/2020 16:31

@Dragonembroidery - washing hands etc is sensible advice but why are you majoring on using antibacterial products when Coronavirus is, er, a virus?

L1appelDuVide · 10/02/2020 16:32

What on earth does being ‘semi-quarantined’ mean @JinglingHellsBells. Sure that completely destroys the point of quarantined Confused

OrangeLindt · 10/02/2020 16:32

4 confirmed cases in the UK out of Millions of people, get some perspective.

postopworry · 10/02/2020 16:33

@Crunchymum in answer to your question, I paid for the second jab. My consultant had been involved in research for the flu jab effectivenss in anti-TNFs and said that, although the research is not conclusive enough to justify the funding of a second jab, given I'd been hospitalised in the past for flu and had no history of flu immunisation, a second jab would be recommended by them.
it wasn't this study (this is for kids I think) but one similar clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03277703

Camomila · 10/02/2020 16:35

spodge If there's enough alcohol in antibac gel I think it works to kill viruses too.

OrangeLindt · 10/02/2020 16:37

@VideographybyLouBloom get a grip, I have friends living in China who are amused at the hysteria the world is in over something happening where they live. Calm yourself down. Typical outraged Mumsnetter Hmm

karencantobe · 10/02/2020 16:39

OP the key thing is to handwash when you are out, and when you get back in your house. Try not to touch your face. It is cold here today, if it is like that wear gloves and wash them when you get home. If your kids are young, keep them in the buggy when going out, unless it is to run around a grassy area. I would avoid playgrounds, too many surfaces to touch.
You could do an online shop, and then stay away from anywhere crowded. And minimise visitors.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 10/02/2020 16:40

I'm not a panicker in any way, shape or form and I'll admit I'm a little worried about this. Solely because of all the quarantines and how seriously it's being taken.

I think there's something we aren't being told tbh.

karencantobe · 10/02/2020 16:41

Also key pads etc are fine if you are not touching your face. Most transmission is either direct contact, sneezes or people transmitting the virus from their hands to their face.
Also for most people it is mild.

Formermousemat · 10/02/2020 16:42

I'd really try not to panic. We've no idea how many people in the UK have it already, as it appears that for many people the symptoms are fairly mild and cold-like. I imagine there are probably people in the world who have had it and had no idea they've had it.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 16:43

get a grip, I have friends living in China who are amused at the hysteria the world is in over something happening where they live. Calm yourself down. Typical outraged Mumsnetter

Of course you do...

JinglingHellsBells · 10/02/2020 16:44

I think there's something we aren't being told tbh.

No one knows the real numbers. There are huge hospitals in China that are full . That is why they had to build another in 2 weeks. The figures on deaths are- according to people in the know- a huge underestimation/ lies.

China has admitted they do not have to tell us the true situation.

If you are worried OP I'd stay at home for a while till it's clearer.
