On my road literally* lord.

OP posts:
Unshriven · 10/02/2020 14:34

Why would you panic?

99% of people whe get it will have no problems at all.

1second · 10/02/2020 14:35

Even 3 month old babies @unshriven?

OP posts:
Microwavedtea · 10/02/2020 14:36

I wouldnt panic personally.

Pinkbonbon · 10/02/2020 14:37

Meh..it's just a new flu. A really bad one yes but no need to freak out. Now it's out there it will probably be around for years. But in time they'll develop a vaccine for the elderly/immune compromised/very young.

Unshriven · 10/02/2020 14:38

Yes, the family who had it in Germany or somewhere kept their tiny baby with them as the other children's symptoms were so mild.

The risk to the baby was thought to be miniscule.

Pinkbonbon · 10/02/2020 14:39

Ah I'd be a bit worried with a young baba tbf. Wash your hands often.

paap1975 · 10/02/2020 14:40

I heard that children appear to be suffering less than adults

Orangeblossom78 · 10/02/2020 14:42

Well, it says they are trying to contact patients who have been at the surgery recently does that count you? I'd just follow the advice and if you have been there recently then ask them what to do. And ask what arrangements are being made if you need to see a GP as well, (as in a different practice or the usual one after cleaning) and go from there.

NoRegrets123 · 10/02/2020 14:43

Yep, it's actually not affecting children too badly so far. I hope this eases your worry.

postopworry · 10/02/2020 14:45

I wouldn't be worried unless you had a consultation with the GP in the past week?

Introvertedbuthappy · 10/02/2020 14:47

Kids are suffering less than adults. Wash your hands. I live in China and the hysteria in the U.K. is something to behold.

1second · 10/02/2020 14:48

I haven’t been - thank god! Good to know about babies, thank you!

OP posts:
gnushoes · 10/02/2020 14:50

Are you worried about your children getting the flu? Basically, this is the flu. I'm also in Brighton and people are being frankly stupid on social media. Please don't worry.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 10/02/2020 14:51

Honestly try not to worry op. There’s a lot of hysteria (particularly on mumsnet!) but it will be ok.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 10/02/2020 15:06

'I live in China and the hysteria in the U.K. is something to behold.'

Well that is maybe because are seeing scenes of panic, deserted streets and people being frogmarched from their homes in China. It does look more than worrying but I haven't seen any signs of hysteria here.

Reginabambina · 10/02/2020 15:08

Well if you haven’t been in contact with that GP it hardly makes a difference if it’s at the other end of the road or the other end of the country. As always, practice good hygiene and avoid people that you know to be ill.

TreatMyself · 10/02/2020 15:12

It will make a difference if other local people have caught the virus from the doctor.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/02/2020 15:12

Are you vaccinated against the flu? That's more likely to kill you.

postopworry · 10/02/2020 15:13

I am getting sick of the people saying it is "just the flu" as some are on this thread and the others
The flu is not "just". I, among hundreds of thousands of others have the flu jab every year due to the risk it presents for us. In fact, I have a double jab because research as shown that immunocompromised people like myself need it twice to have the best possible chance to build up immunity.

In the years before I had the jab I was hospitalised with the flu.
This virus is not a flu virus and there is no immunisation for it and won't be for a good while yet.
Sure say, if you are not in a high risk group, less need to worry, but please do not say "just the flu".

recrudescence · 10/02/2020 15:14

It’s always a worry when one’s literally is affected.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/02/2020 15:16

People aren't saying 'just the flu' to make out flu isn't dangerous. They're saying it to point out people's faulty risk assessment of coronavirus.

SapphosRock · 10/02/2020 15:16

I'm also in Brighton OP. My window cleaner casually mentioned he'd been in contact with the original guy who has the virus before saying he felt a sore throat coming on.

I'm 30 weeks pregnant and wasn't to happy about it Angry

Not sure what to do other than stay inside and keep an eye out for symptoms.

CountFosco · 10/02/2020 15:27

Are you vaccinated against the flu? That's more likely to kill you.

The death rate is lower for flu isn't it, ~0.02% rather than 2%.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 10/02/2020 15:31

Yes I think the mortality from normal flu 0.1% compared to approx 3% with this virus? I am not hysterical or frantic but seeing the footage from China it is impossible not to have concerns.

The thing is none of the experts can give even an approximate idea of what the next few weeks will bring and that is worrying.

I wouldn't panic op, just hand wash and ring 111 if you feel unwell. Everyone reckons it's the elderly and those with other conditions that are most at risk, not very reassuring for those people of course.
