My GP, at the bottom of my road. WIBU to panic now? I have 2 young kids (1 baby.) I’m more concerned about them... 😕

OP posts:

YADNBU to worry.

Whilst you're very unlikely to contract it, and very likely to be fine even if you do, I think most people would feel concerned with it so close to home, especially with a young baby.

So take precautions (eg lots of hand washing) and try not to panic or let the worry dominate life, but also don't let anyone make you feel silly for worrying. Most of us would, in spite of the statistics.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 10/02/2020 16:48

'I'm not a panicker in any way, shape or form and I'll admit I'm a little worried about this. Solely because of all the quarantines and how seriously it's being taken.'

Yes, we all remember birdflu, sars and swine flu and it was worrying but this does seem different. Only time will tell, in a months times it might be old news. Or not.

frillseeking · 10/02/2020 16:50

introverted can you shed any light as to why people are being forcibly taken from their homes?

BMW6 · 10/02/2020 16:50

What would you achieve by panicking?

Inherdefence · 10/02/2020 16:51

I’m in Brighton too. I went out Friday with a friend who is travelling to Africa this week and wanted to buy hand sanitiser for the plane trip. Boots and Superdrug were completely sold out because people are panicking about the virus despite the advice being that frequent hand-washing is a much better protection.

I agree you needn’t worry too much OP. Attending the same medical practice as the two unfortunate sufferers isn’t a high risk situation. Just practice normal hygiene.

Fidgetwonkam · 10/02/2020 16:51

@FoamingAtTheUterus I assumed the efforts to quarantine were to stop the spread of the virus as currently we don’t have a vaccine therefore we can’t protect those most at risk. And it’s new and we don’t fully understand it yet.

Just my educated thoughts though!

thenightsky · 10/02/2020 16:52

I understand from friends in China that the deaths being reported are only the deaths in hospitals. Lots of people are dying at home and are not counted in the official figures.

Standrewsschool · 10/02/2020 17:01

Bird flu, swine flu and sars were pretty worrying at the time. A friend got swine flu. That was nasty.

StrangeLookingParasite · 10/02/2020 17:07

Wash hands, use plenty of antibacterial products, wipes, spray etc

Careful with petrol pumps too. I read somewhere that they have more bacteria than toilet seats. Use antibacterial hand gel.

Wash at 60 degrees to kill bacteria or use fabric detergent additional anti bac from dettol.

None of which will make the slightest difference, as this is a virus, not a bacteria.

StrangeLookingParasite · 10/02/2020 17:08

I probably had swine flu in 2009. It wasn't exactly fun (two days completely lost, don't remember a thing), but I'm still around, obvs.

Youngatheart00 · 10/02/2020 17:10

@strangelookingparasite but the NHS advice, published in the national press yesterday, advises on the thorough hand washing and hand gels. I get your point re virus vs bacteria, but good hygiene practice can’t hurt.

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 10/02/2020 17:10

Basically, this is the flu.

Well, thank goodness someone has all the facts for us. Do be sure to get in touch with Public Health England, as they seem less certain than you.

BillieEilish · 10/02/2020 17:10

While I would be normally the first to say 'don't worry', if I had a baby and this was in the doctors surgery at the end of the road, damn right, I'd be worried.

Stay in for a bit if you can OP, I am sure you are absolutely fine, but I understand your concern. So no, YANBU (can't vote on laptop)

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 17:11

hand gels with high alcohol content will reduce transmission of viruses.

LucaFritz · 10/02/2020 17:12

Even im panicking now its not a new flu virus ffs it's an unknown virus with a long incubation period and a fast kill rate but China won't reveal the actual numbers dead so we don't know the full scale of the epidemic yet Hmm it has no cure or a vaccine and its even killing fit healthy people not just the vunerable ones that flu does! And to top it all off our government is doing nothing to stop the spread and the cases in this country are going up as a result

LucaFritz · 10/02/2020 17:14

The flu causes a fever vomiting and diahorrea this corona virus doesn't it causes glass like lesions in the lungs causing them to fill with fluid which then kills you...not very flu like

DevilsAdv0caat · 10/02/2020 17:14

The chinese uni. students are wearing masks which does frighten people when they are out and about.
Chinese students in my current city and home city (both big chinese populations) have been wearing masks for years. If you're frightened by this you're an idiot imo.

I haven't seen any signs of hysteria here

Ha ha - you need to read some of the Coronavirus on this forum

CustardySergeant · 10/02/2020 17:20

"I'm also in Brighton OP. My window cleaner casually mentioned he'd been in contact with the original guy who has the virus before saying he felt a sore throat coming on."

What an irresponsible man he is! Even if he felt OK when he left home today, as soon as he felt his sore throat coming on he should have immediately gone home, not stood around "casually mentioning" it to anyone! That's awful and isiotic of him.

littlepeaegg · 10/02/2020 17:21

I had to pick up my child today; school is closed until further notice as a family are in isolation waiting for their results.... they've come back from some of the regions and have displayed symptoms this weekend. The school is being deep cleaned. One of the children are in my child's class (small school)...

VideographybyLouBloom · 10/02/2020 17:22

get a grip, I have friends living in China who are amused at the hysteria the world is in over something happening where they live. Calm yourself down. Typical outraged Mumsnetter
So the photos and videos emerging from China of deserted streets, people being rounded up and hospitals being built in a week are fake news are they? I’m not outraged or hysterical but people talking about how China is laughing at our overreaction is ridiculous.

mindproject · 10/02/2020 17:22

The hysteria and constant news reports are just to promote the new vaccine they'll want everyone to have soon. Stop worrying, stress lowers your immunity.

CustardySergeant · 10/02/2020 17:23

idiotic not isiotic.^^ Blush
