Airplane terror attack

If stabbing a fellow pilot and trying to down a plane with 180 Israelis isn't terrorism what is?

It seems like a mass terrorism event has been fouled but heroes on an air plane this morning

Many if our news outlets are describing this as a stabbing on an airplane. No...if you stab the pilot and the plane plummet towards the ground that is an attempt at mass murder... terrorism.

Are the media so afraid now of using the word terrorism that they completely downplay the event. Third rated news article in the Guardian after political stories

It's a reminder of how many enemies Israel has and what they are prepared to do.

Sounds terrifying. Some very brave people on board.

These sick individuals who will kill a large number of people by killing the pilot and therefore crashing the plane.

I saw a comment on FB underneath the picture of Captain Smit Machchhar, that I quite liked:

People keep saying “hero”, but I keep thinking to myself – is that really the face of a hero?
That's the look of a man who just wants to live.
To live and let others live.
You can easily imagine him dancing at some party, celebrating with others.
But where's the whole, 'tough guy, let's scowl and look intimidating' vibe?
Well, that 'tough guy' is lying there, tied up with simple headphone wires, his brain bursting with pure hatred for everyone who survived."

It would be one hell of a coincidence if pilot happened to become suicidal lying depressed on a plane carrying Israelis in a region of conflict where terrorism is sadly common.

And where much of it is state-sponsored, so let's call that spade a spade too.

excuse my ignorance, but the plane has a black box? There will be a recording of what happened in the cockpit and what the plane debt flight path and alatitude were? So they will be able to analyse everything? And hopefully report it?

I read the compiler is being moved to UAE hospital. No doubt he’ll disappear.

There should be a crash protected data recorder (registers the main flight parameters and things like control inputs, etc) and also a crash protected voice recorder (registers voices on the flight deck).

There will almost certainly have been a not crash protected quick access recorder which holds lots of lower priority data usually used by the likes of engineers.

Hopefully all three will have recoverable data but how much of it gets into the public domain we will have to wait and see.

Not at all convinced the UAE authorities will want an Omani pilot to slip away...

i do hope not, I hope he lives and can be cross examined in front of a jury of his peers and international law

Islam isn't a race.

Being wary of a Muslim wearing a backpack on a train isn't Islamophobia.

Our brains are hardwired to recognize patterns and avoid perceived threats based on past trauma or traumatic historical events which create a lasting association with specific environments or demographics and is recognized by behavioral scientists as a fundamental aspect of human risk assessment and survival instincts designed to prioritize immediate survival over social considerations, so heightened vigilance and a lasting association in the public consciousness to 7/7 of Muslim suicide bombers blowing up trains and buses created that connection.

The same way it would never have crossed anyone's minds that planes would be hijacked and deliberately flown into buildings before 9/11.

I flew long haul regularly before 9/11 and it was never something I considered as a threat as you'd never think anyone would fly a plane into a building because you would assume they had the same survival instincts as everyone else.

Look at how 9/11 fundamentally changed air travel from a relatively relaxed experience into a high security environment.

If should imagine if Hindus, Christians, Jews or any other religion had carried out the kind of mass atrocity attacks we've seen in the West over the last 25 years, the public might be wary of members of those religions in risk assessing if they may pose a threat.

They may also consider what is it specific to that religion, that the Muslims who carried out those attacks, interpreted to be honouring their God by slaughtering innocent people while screaming 'Allahu Akbar'.

I feel like I’m not even to like this post for fear of being accused of being racist by the ‘state’ and that’s shocking in a
society where free speech is apparently not allowed in some circumstances. It feels like certain things are ring fenced as a blanket no no when actually a significant number of people share the same concerns.

I agree with everything you’ve posted. To add, for me the bigger picture is that I find it incomprehensible that women are treated in such a disrespectful and appalling ways by those with such extreme religious views particularly in the Middle East and they’re left to suffer in silence in these medieval societies. I realise that we can’t stop these religious fanatics taking over their own countries unfortunately we’ve tried to liberate women but it’s proved so complex so I’m not sure what the answers is and how to help them, but the government need to seriously consider how these extremist can infiltrate themselves here and how that will negatively impact its own citizens (who they clearly don’t seem to care about!)

Of course there are some wonderful people who are muslims and should be allowed to practice their faith but it’s being able to filter out those with extreme views where killing non believers makes them martyrs. We don’t want them here, ever and we need to protect them women and children form these deranged individuals.

Actually having posted about the recorders I should have mentioned (to head off conspiracy theories down the road) it's possible the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) may not hold any useable, or at least easily retrievable data.

Whether it has or not might all depend on how the aircraft was shutdown on the ground the diversion and whether the positioning crew who ended up landing the thing had preserving the CVR high up their list of priorities on the day.

The story about we are being told about this FlyDubai flight has more holes in it than a piece of Swiss cheese and yet most posters on here are jumping to conclusion that it was definitely a terrorist plot against Israel.

Even Netanyahu has said publicly that he doesn't think it was a hijacking but a suicide attempt.

If it was suicide, why take the lives of hundreds of other innocent people too? There are plenty of ways to do it without harming anyone else

It's a good question..and it was asked about Andreas Lubitz (to stop you having to search that was the Germanwings co-pilot).

I don't have an answer but that was a very clear case of suicide (and murder)...

I think under different circumstances it could be viewed as a suicide and the passengers would unfortunately be collateral damage (without meaning to be disrespectful) but imo this is too much of a coincidence to simply be a suicide attempt. Had it been a flight from Australia to Canada with an atheist pilot I’d be much more inclined to believe that.

It will be interesting to see (if we ever do) the data readouts for this..

Hopefully no-one here will ever be in this situation but this idea of "just pulling on the controls" needs caveats.

It has got traction ATM because it worked on this flight, either by chance because the aircraft was roughly wings level before the the passenger pulled or he knew enough to get the wings roughly level before pulling .

In other circumstances literally just pulling on the controls "as seen on TV" could actually have made the situation a whole lot worse...

I have wondered about this.

Also the oxygen masks don’t appear to be down on any of the bodies I’ve seen. When would they have come down?

Even Netanyahu has said publicly that he doesn't think it was a hijacking but a suicide attempt.

Let's look at the exact wording by Netanyahu that you are referring to:
Netanyahu told Fox News the attacker was an Omani national and said investigations suggested he had undergone "Islamist radical indoctrination".
He said that once the attacker had been subdued and tied up by passengers and crew, he was "calling out to the aircrew 'kill me, kill me', so it's clear he was suicidal - that's not a question".

So he didn't state that it was suicide just that the co pilot was suicidal. There is a big difference- the 7th July terror attacks in London were not suicide but suicidal terrorist bombers.

A nice attempt at misinformation and I also notice that you conveniently missed out the first part about Islamic indoctrination.

Twiglets1 · Today 11:27

Most likely only “suicide” in the same way that suicide bombers will accept dying themselves in the pursuit of their goal of causing mass casualties.

The drop down Oxygen masks would only have deployed automatically if the cabin had become depressurised.

There's been no mention of that happening and no obvious reason why it would.

OTOH I wouldn't be suprised if at least one of the casualities ended up on oxygen from one of the portable walkround bottles.

Beeloux · Today 12:24

The amount of ignorance I’ve seen on social media with people claiming it’s false is laughable. I used to work for the main airline of the UAE.

  1. Crew can enter the flight deck using a code in such emergencies.
  2. Crash axe is a part of the emergency equipment in the flight deck. Also found in the cabin.
  3. For people claiming it’s fake because the oxygen masks weren’t deployed, they would only deploy during a rapid decompression. No holes in the aircraft fuselage then they won’t deploy.
  4. For those saying the aircraft would break apart at such a descent, during a rapid decompression the flight crew fly it down to 10000ft as fast as possible. The rudder was damaged.

While living in the Gulf, the amount of times I’ve heard the holocaust never happened, 9/11 was an inside job and that Osama and Saddam are heroes is laughable.

Who says a hero has to be a scowling tough guy? It sounds like you are lauding the man who tried to commit mass murder, rather than the man who ‘simply wanted to live’, and as a result heroically saved another 150 lives.

No, netanyahu hasn't said this at all. Yes he said he was suicidal but also that they have evidence that the co pilot had been radicalised and intended to take the plane down. Why are you trying to downplay this event? Most suicidal people dont try to murder their colleague before deliberately killing hundreds of people

He did say this. I heard an interview with him on a US channel and he said this. He may have said something different later on a different platform but he did say this. I am down playing this story of the terrorist attack because all evidence is to the contrary!

What? How on earth am I lauding the attacker?
It wasn’t even my quote, I just liked how it pointed out that one guy wanted to live and wanted others to live too, while the other seemed completely consumed by hatred.

Of course it's racism. Most people wouldn't know the difference between a Muslim person and a Hindu person simply by watching them walk past with a back pack on the underground. Perhaps someone who had PTSD from being involved in a terror attack with particular individuals might be hardwired as you describe but not regular people. No, they would just be racists.

rainingsnoring · Today 13:17

The absolute desperation of this.

This is a story of heroic Indians, Muslims and Israelis coming together to prevent a terrorist attack on innocent lives.

Anyone on here posting about holes in Swiss cheese, Islamophobia, Bibi being a terrible liar etc is missing the point. Its a story of heros who averted a disaster.

That some can't just come on here and wonder at their bravery and the rarity of everything going right just for once really says a lot about how they view the world.

There is no need to wonder at the bravery because the story is clearly a fabrication. Anyone who is believing this narrative, just as it is being told, is clearly not thinking about things carefully.
For starters, how did this random plumber manage to walk into the cockpit and rescue a plane which was apparently charging towards the earth at such a speed that G Force would have made it impossible to even walk, never mind rescue the controls and land the plane perfectly in an airport?

MrsPernicious · Today 13:24

“I was fighting for my life. At one point, I realised that if I didn’t get up … then passengers would lose their lives.”

Can we please accept that Capt Smit Machchhar should be a role model to us all. He wasn't just a man who wanted to live, he was a pilot who wanted his passengers to live.

What's speed in a descent got to do with (small) g force...???

The g might only have become an issue when he got to the controls and the recovery from the dive was attempted.
