Airplane terror attack

If stabbing a fellow pilot and trying to down a plane with 180 Israelis isn't terrorism what is?

It seems like a mass terrorism event has been fouled but heroes on an air plane this morning

Many if our news outlets are describing this as a stabbing on an airplane. No...if you stab the pilot and the plane plummet towards the ground that is an attempt at mass murder... terrorism.

Are the media so afraid now of using the word terrorism that they completely downplay the event. Third rated news article in the Guardian after political stories

It's a reminder of how many enemies Israel has and what they are prepared to do.

I agree that the airline was probably turning a blind eye to the clause.

It would have been sensible to ensure that if they were allowing pilots from countries that had not normalised relations with Israel to fly into Israel, they at least chose those who appeared moderate in their religious beliefs at work.

So praying regularly is a red flag now?

Interesting that you criticise this post as being 'extremely racist' when it isn't but haven't criticised @DaisyDooley's post which is blatant racism.

I've said several times on this section that posts which are clearly racist, specifically Islamophobic or anti Arab are often not challenged or deleted but criticism of Israel (not Jews) is complained about and very often deleted.
The double standards on here are shocking, and from people who likely don't consider themselves to be racist.

Islam isn't a race.

Being wary of a Muslim wearing a backpack on a train isn't Islamophobia.

Our brains are hardwired to recognize patterns and avoid perceived threats based on past trauma or traumatic historical events which create a lasting association with specific environments or demographics and is recognized by behavioral scientists as a fundamental aspect of human risk assessment and survival instincts designed to prioritize immediate survival over social considerations, so heightened vigilance and a lasting association in the public consciousness to 7/7 of Muslim suicide bombers blowing up trains and buses created that connection.

The same way it would never have crossed anyone's minds that planes would be hijacked and deliberately flown into buildings before 9/11.

I flew long haul regularly before 9/11 and it was never something I considered as a threat as you'd never think anyone would fly a plane into a building because you would assume they had the same survival instincts as everyone else.

Look at how 9/11 fundamentally changed air travel from a relatively relaxed experience into a high security environment.

If should imagine if Hindus, Christians, Jews or any other religion had carried out the kind of mass atrocity attacks we've seen in the West over the last 25 years, the public might be wary of members of those religions in risk assessing if they may pose a threat.

They may also consider what is it specific to that religion, that the Muslims who carried out those attacks, interpreted to be honouring their God by slaughtering innocent people while screaming 'Allahu Akbar'.

The story about we are being told about this FlyDubai flight has more holes in it than a piece of Swiss cheese and yet most posters on here are jumping to conclusion that it was definitely a terrorist plot against Israel.

Even Netanyahu has said publicly that he doesn't think it was a hijacking but a suicide attempt.

No, netanyahu hasn't said this at all. Yes he said he was suicidal but also that they have evidence that the co pilot had been radicalised and intended to take the plane down. Why are you trying to downplay this event? Most suicidal people dont try to murder their colleague before deliberately killing hundreds of people

No I didn't say it was a red flag to pray regularly.

It's just a picture is emerging that will make make it harder for Flydubai to defend allowing the co-pilot to fly into Tel Aviv despite the clause they had signed that meant they should have been vetting their pilots background (no pilots from countries that had not normalised relations with Israel).

It wasn't as if this man "flew under the radar" (no pun intended).

He was a man with strong religious beliefs and he was open about that. Standard background checks should have excluded him from flying into Tel Aviv on the basis of being an Oman national.

Investigations being done now (almost too late for the 174 passengers on board) are suggesting that he had undergone a radical Islamist indoctrination.

I have worked with the kindest most gentle man who was a devout Muslim who would not shake hands with me as a female. I was surprised but eventually decided it was him respecting me as a woman within his culture and should not necessarily seen as a negative. He never undermined me in a professional manner. I am not saying he was typical of all men from his culture - but we shouldn’t generalise.

Also - I am not sure we should see people who come from a country which has generalised relationships with Israel as not being of risk. The governments of these countries may links with Israel but that doesn’t mean their populations are generally supportive.

It is a relief this attempt to kill people did not succeed and it gives those tasked with improving air travel safe a lot to consider. This will require more sophisticated thinking than generalisations popping up on this thread.

Edited

The point is the airline had signed a clause saying they would not allow pilots from countries like Oman (who have not signed a normalisation clause with Israel) to fly into Israel. They broke that clause and will be heavily punished financially for doing so I expect.

Though yes it will give those tasked with improving air travel security a lot to consider and changes will likely be made as a result of this incident.

Exactly ... strange way of committing suicide to try to stab a colleague to death. His primary mission was clearly not his own death but the death of everyone on board, including himself.

The Guardian quotes Dr Shota Musaev, a dentist, was also among those who ran to the cockpit.

He told CNN they found the attacker on the floor on top of the pilot, stabbing him. He then rushed to help Machchhar, “terrified” he was going to die.

“He was covered in cuts – his head, his hands – they were practically sliced open, almost severed in two … he had lost a lot of blood and was in bad shape.

“I think that if we had waited even a few more moments, we would have lost him. His blood pressure had plummeted, he suddenly lost consciousness, and there was blood everywhere,” he said.

The absolute desperation of this.

This is a story of heroic Indians, Muslims and Israelis coming together to prevent a terrorist attack on innocent lives.

Anyone on here posting about holes in Swiss cheese, Islamophobia, Bibi being a terrible liar etc is missing the point. Its a story of heros who averted a disaster.

That some can't just come on here and wonder at their bravery and the rarity of everything going right just for once really says a lot about how they view the world.

Give this man the best medal available anywhere. Incredible bravery and presence of mind to get that door opened. He saved everyone's lives. So much Bravo to that man.

Agree - it’s an uplifting story of a tragedy averted by all the heroes on board of varying backgrounds.

The dentist sounds brilliant. He is giving his wife a lot of praise too for the psychological support she provided to distressed passengers.

So much to celebrate 🥳

The guy who pulled up on the control because he watched 'Mayday'!!

Love everything about this.

Exactly.
One could choose to see it as a story ‘full of holes,’ or as a wonderful example of people coming together to avert a disaster.
Loved it how the passengers sang Am Yisrael Chai upon landing!

notimagain · Today 08:08

It will be interesting to see (if we ever do) the data readouts for this..

Hopefully no-one here will ever be in this situation but this idea of "just pulling on the controls" needs caveats.

It has got traction ATM because it worked on this flight, either by chance because the aircraft was roughly wings level before the the passenger pulled or he knew enough to get the wings roughly level before pulling .

In other circumstances literally just pulling on the controls "as seen on TV" could actually have made the situation a whole lot worse...

KatiePricesKnickers · Today 08:11

There is another thread on chat or Aibu where posters are saying ‘It’s all so confusing’ and ‘nothing is clear’.
Basically tactics to distract from the facts.
Disgusting terrorist apologists, only because the target were Jews.

I also don't really fully understand how they were able to pull this off with an out of control aircraft... however... they did!!

I find this story to be the inverse of the holes in Swiss cheese accident theory.

If there had been a less heroic pilot, or his injuries had been slightly different, if he hadnt managed to open the door...

If the passengers/ crew hadnt made it to the cabin time before control panel destroyed, despite an out of control aircraft...

If the aircraft had been unrecoverable... despite damage to rudder, how it was controlled I've no idea...

If there hadnt been those particular passengers, a dr, everyone staying calm enough, no injuries from uncontrolled flight...

I'm not religious but this one almost tempts me...

Well, it in an air incident, so it will need to be investigated and reports published as per international law.

So we should know, unless it becomes like another China Eastern MU5735.

Actually maybe this guy is trolling us and is actually a shit hot pilot. Because pulling back like that could easily has resulted in dropping one wing and an uncontrolled spin yes? And the damage to the tailplane was the rudder I think? So maybe the recovery wasn't a bloody miracle but instead a really good pilot who for some reason isn't saying hes a pilot... whatever I love this story so much!!!

I'm not sure of the guys background but if an aircraft is significantly nose down with a lot of bank on as well (i.e. well off wings level) literally just pulling back on the controls has the potential to just dig the thing into a accelerating spiral dive.

There's a whole chunk of commercial pilot training and recurrent checking/training around the subject, known as "upset recovery".

I want to emphasise that my hat is off to the guy for doing something sensible but that what he did worked might be facet of this near accident where an element of good fortune played more of a part than is.being reported.

Sounds terrifying. Some very brave people on board.

These sick individuals who will kill a large number of people by killing the pilot and therefore crashing the plane.

YourAmplePlumPoster · Today 09:49

It's not the first time we have a suicide/murder pilot.

Seriestwo · Today 09:51

excuse my ignorance, but the plane has a black box? There will be a recording of what happened in the cockpit and what the plane debt flight path and alatitude were? So they will be able to analyse everything? And hopefully report it?

I read the compiler is being moved to UAE hospital. No doubt he’ll disappear.
