@SharonEllis your reply surprised me in that I hadn't considered that angle

Is it likely?

It would be a good start, I'm not sure how much it would fund in overall need

It would be a drop in the ocean, but a meaningful one!

Oh look, another dead cat on the table. What news story is he trying to distract attention away from?

Yes what's he really up to

onwardsup4 · 06/02/2025 12:02

Yes what's he really up to

Totally destroying everything the federal government provides.

onwardsup4 · 06/02/2025 12:21

@GrammarTeacher oh is that all

Israel's defence minister ordered the army on Thursday to prepare a plan to allow the "voluntary departure" of residents from Gaza, after U.S. President Donald Trump drew widespread condemnation for announcing plans to take over the strip.

voluntary?! What will happen with those that don’t want to voluntary leave? Also why should IDF take part on this?? Finally , is there not a ceasefire in place ? Can’t they really see that voluntary forcing people to leave their land will break this ceasefire and risk civilians and hostages lives?

Countries like Spain, Ireland, Norway, and others, which have levelled accusations and false claims against Israel over its actions in Gaza, are legally obligated to allow any Gaza resident to enter their territories," he said.

countries that oppose to ethnics cleansing should contribute on ethnic cleansing?

This talk is so unreasonable, so war mongering.
The nutters have been emboldened by Trump.

EasternStandard · 06/02/2025 13:23

@LetThereBeLove they do yes. I'm not sure how possible it is to seize Hamas funds

It would be one way to weaken them and hasn't happened already

I agree it needs to be another set of people, who though?

General question to anyone

SharonEllis · 06/02/2025 13:35

The figure usually cited for Hamas's wealth as an organisation is $500 million. This link suggests more & indicates how they avoid sanctions etc. Individual leafers also privately wealthy. All those nations who have facilitated this wealth could also contribute. www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/econographics/global-sanctions-dashboard-how-hamas-raises-uses-and-moves-money/

Atangledweb · 06/02/2025 13:54

SharonEllis · 06/02/2025 11:12

Hamas is very rich. Their assets ahould be seized. Its crazy it hasnt been done more effectively. That would be a contribution.

Good point. Surely the mega millions held could be put to better use. Russian assets were seized so why not hamas or other terrorist assets

And obviously its up to Palestinians to come up with a plan for their self determination. Who the hell else should do it? They need active partners of course but they have to have a plan. Anyone else will be accused of colonialism!

This.

They wouldn't like any other country to decide so they need to come up with something that isn't more of the same... hamas

Apparently there are 'people ' no one comes forward with what group or names though.

Apparently there are 'people ' no one comes forward with what group or names though.

What? You want names? You do know you're on mumsnet not sure how connected people are here.

The suggestion that because the voicesbof moderate Palestinians are not heard they must all be terrorists is a strange conclusion to make. I have no idea how you defeat a terrorist organisation that has forcibly taken away your options for democratic processes. Palestinians are between a rock and hard place. Illegal occupiers and terrorists. Iran may have a hand in Hamas but the last 15 months have demonstrated that they do not control Gaza. It was Israel that were able to effectively cut off and control all access to humanitarian aid. Control who and what goes in and out.

I think the question isn't just about who should and can run Gaza effectively for the good of the people that live there but how can that happen without conflict. What should come first, Hamas defeated or an end to occupation? What is the best route for success? We are currently in stage 1 of a 3 stage ceasefire deal. Final stage looking at reconstruction and rebuilding Gaza. I would hope that those partners involved in the painstaking ceasefire negotiations will continue with talks on how to move forward. Part of that has to focus on the future of Gaza and a timeline to end the current occupation with obvious conditions in place. Otherwise we're just back on the treadmill. The last year or so has proved terrorists can't be defeated by force so realistic alternatives need to be supported and nurtured.

Dulra · 06/02/2025 15:27

LetThereBeLove · 06/02/2025 15:09

Absolutely this.

Who would cease their assets?

LetThereBeLove · 06/02/2025 15:30

Dulra · 06/02/2025 15:27

Who would cease their assets?

Other countries, as happened with the UK when Russian oligarchs had their assets seized after Russia marched into Ukraine.

LetThereBeLove · 06/02/2025 15:33

And in answer to your other question Dulra the terrorists have to be defeated before any 'occupation' can end. Hamas occupies Gaza as it allows no opposition to their rule by terror.

Dulra · 06/02/2025 15:34

LetThereBeLove · 06/02/2025 15:30

Other countries, as happened with the UK when Russian oligarchs had their assets seized after Russia marched into Ukraine.

So it's their assets in other countries? Definitely something to try but it would be reliant on cooperation from the countries they have assets in.

SharonEllis · 06/02/2025 15:35

Dulra · 06/02/2025 15:27

Who would cease their assets?

Oh come on. Dont know how to cease an asset but assets are seized and frozen all the time on criminals and terrorists and sanctions imposed.

I'm pretty shocked that you're unsure about what should come first, defeating terrorists or ending occupation... surely it's very obviously defeating terrorists? And ending occupation ( if that's what it is ) shortly after?

Dulra · 06/02/2025 15:37

Edited

Yes but it's not clear how you defeat the terrorists. An end to occupation needs to be on the table as part of whatever negotiations can happen. You will never fully defeat terrorism just minimise it's support with alternatives

SharonEllis · 06/02/2025 15:44

So @Dulra, despite following this closely for a long time you have no idea about any moderate non-terrorist groups or movements in Gaza. Do you not think that's extraordinary? I mean, really incredible?

1dayatatime · 06/02/2025 15:51

From a different angle what if the majority of Gazans actually want Hamas to stay in power and want them to continue to fight Israel- what then?

It depends who you ask …
to Israel ending with terrorists will be the priority
to Palestinians ending the occupation and its extremists is the priority.

to me they’re as bad and damaging as each other

I know what should come first but terrorists are often part of negotiations. IRA were very much part of the negotiations in Northern Ireland
