You can find a sanitised version in Western media outlets that replaces the word rape with abuse but this is the ugly truth of how Israeli soldiers treat Palestinians and how some of the Israeli mainstream excuse it.

Israel has a major problem with its far right who are quickly becoming the mainstream and unless it gets control it will continue to sink lower and lower in the eyes of the world losing all moral credibility. To excuse rape and call rapists heroes with some high ranking politicians and media outlets screaming that what these men did was justified. Open your eyes. No god, no religion, no political ideology, no one with a prick of humanity can condone gang rape. But I am sure I will see genocide apologists defending it on here.

The Palestinian man was a civilian who was being held without charge but regardless is shoving a stick up someone * repeatedly so that they lose the ability to walk anything other than savage barbarity. Disgusting.

Sick sick sick. These people have been fed propaganda all their lives and it's made them mentally ill. They truly believe that innocent Palestinians deserve this barbarity. Something needs to be done.

Kriscross · 30/07/2024 17:36

This is awful. Disgusting and needs thorough investigation. This crime is vile whoever does it to anyone.

(There was a story about a male Israeli raped by Hamas and telling his story on the hamas thread yesterday. Also awful and disgusting. Sadly the thread was hijacked and derailed).

Haaretz news

The Netanyahu State Has Lost Control of Israel's Extreme Right

The chain of events at the Sde Teiman military detention facility Monday and afterward at the entrance to the Beit Lid army base in the Sharon is living and direct proof of the advanced disintegration of Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu. Every link in the chain points to systemic decay; taken together, they are deadly.

Israel on the Brink of Savagery: Far-right Ministers and Coalition MKs Storm Army Bases
Members of Benjamin Netanyahu's government gave a tailwind to the far-right mob that stormed Sde Teiman and broke into the camp. The argument that the IDF operates transparently and pursuant to the law is the best ammunition against a world which believes Israel commits war crimes

When historians tell the story of how Israeli society became so brutalized – a process that has greatly intensified since October 7 – a whole chapter will be dedicated to the storming of the Sde Teiman army base to protest the detention of reservists for questioning about suspected sexual abuse of an arrested terrorist.

Yes, I read about that Hamas gang rape of an Israeli man on Oct 7. It is horrendous.

I didn’t think though that Israelis, the world’s moral army, wanted their soldiers, safe in a detention centre where they guard prisoners, to be known as vile, brutal vindictive rapists.

Or want the sort of society where some ministers, soldiers, police, and perpetrators alike expect a blind eye to be turned on acts like this.

It looks suspiciously like they are surprised at being arrested because they are used to committing war crimes at will.

Some Israelis may have been conscious of the ICCJ opinions about Israel and realised this needs to stop. They already knew Sde Teiman needed closing.

This is Russia worthy.

Research paper from 9 years ago detailing Israeli prison guards sexually abusing Palestinian prisoners. It’s evidently not new.

Do you know the reason why? They were taught torture techniques such as "the Palestinian chair technique" during joint exercises with the IDF back in 2004.

Never want to hear the word moral and IDF in the same sentence again

TinyYellow · 31/07/2024 08:08

It’s sickening that the IDF is an organisation that Israelis are actually actually proud of.

BodkinToday · 31/07/2024 11:36

And we allow our youngsters to join the IDF and keep their British passports!

Flibflobflibflob · 31/07/2024 11:39

They should be prosecuted, just as anyone committing abuse, and sexual assault should be prosecuted.

Oh come on, not every IDF member is going to be doing this.

Theres a reason it’s become controversial in Israel, precisely because it’s seen as a bad thing. It kicked off when military police went to arrest soldiers, as they should.

There's many who defend it too, Including government ministers who have openly said that anything goes when it comes to Palestinian detainees. And let's not forget that members the knesset along side other citizens broke into detention centers demanding the release of the IDF soldiers.

Auvergne63 · 31/07/2024 16:25

I was listening to an interview with a Haaretz journalist ,on radio 4, regarding what happened in this detention centre. It was harrowing. Coupled with fact that, the military police asked for the help of the "normal" police to contain the crowd storming the place and were met with a no is shocking.

Isn't the key point in this story that the soldiers are actually being charged?

Surely for the actions of a tiny fraction to be an indictment of the IDF on the whole, there'd have to be a cover up. Otherwise this is actually proof that - as with any large group of people, especially soldiers - there are just a few bad apples But the organisation on the whole is moral.

And they are wrong and vile, equally there are going to be Israelis who are appalled. The fact that the Israeli media are reporting it and it is being discussed is a measure of the fact that there isn’t a giant conspiracy.

People are more complicated than Israeli evil and Palestinians good or Palestinians evil Israelis good.

It’s precisely this kind of narrow thinking that makes peace practically impossible. If you convince yourself that your enemy is sub human you can allow yourself all sorts of license to brutality and evil. We saw it with the victims of 7th October and we are seeing it at this prison.

It is more than a few bad apples, it is a sector of the army, the police, the government and certain settlers. It is a whole current in the society.

This story proves the opposite.

It really doesn't

When nine soldiers were arrested on Monday, it prompted an invasion of two military bases by politicians and demonstrators, mostly representing far right parties, who were furious about the arrests and described the men as heroes.

Government Politicians involved in the demonstrations to release the soldiers.

The detentions are the first time Israel has charged soldiers with abuse of Palestinian detainees, but they come after months of reporting by the UN and multiple media organisations into widespread abuse of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Many have centred on Sde Teiman, which was set up as a temporary holding centre for detainees to be processed when taken out of Gaza but became an overcrowded prison. Israel has refused to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross access to Palestinian prisoners, and human rights activists have described it as “the Israeli Guantánamo”.

The Association of Civil Rights in Israel has taken the government to court over the treatment of prisoners at Sde Teiman, filing an appeal asking for the centre to be closed over abuse. The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in June that “all efforts” would be made to transfer prisoners out, but it is still in operation.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/08/2024 11:33

Haaretz

ISRAEL: The arrest of 8 Israeli soldiers suspected of severely sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee in the Sde Teiman facility has been extended through to Sunday,a military court decided. The judge noted that not all those arrested are suspected to have taken part in the abuse in the same way, but were all privy to the "inner circle." The judge further said that "it is forbidden to harm prisoners unnecessarily, however serious the crime they committed is. The law and IDF values state this."

  • Several Israeli journalists were attacked on Tuesday by a far-right mob protesting the soldiers' arrest. Ilana Curiel, a journalist for Israeli news site Ynet, said that the protesters "shoved me, spit on me and called me a slut, an 'Arabs' whore,' a traitor." Ori Isaac, a reporter for Channel 12 News, was also struck, spat on, and verbally attacked by the mob, according to Israeli media watchdog site The Seventh Eye.
"Many are saying a civil war is starting. But in practice, the left is virtually uninvolved, and it certainly isn't in the streets. This was a deliberate assault by the far right on state institutions, amid the normalization of multiple behaviors that nobody would have dreamed of accepting a few years ago. On the false grounds of defending soldiers ("our fighters," even though they aren't combat soldiers and aren't even at the front), the right is trying to justify what appears to be severe sexual abuse. It is also covering for the violent break-ins at both bases, the threats and violence against soldiers and the incitement to harming senior officers" – Amos Harel
