How have we come to a state where the police confront someone for being overtly Jewish?

mids2019 · 20/04/2024 18:39

Just how?

I think at best this inept policing at worst vile anti semitism.

I suppose it is now in the open that central London has become effectively a no go area for Jews given the potential for abuse from hate marchers.

Can't we just stop these marches so Jews can go about their business?

@hélène79
David Miller, who this week is calling for lists to be made of British Jews employed in the civil service (he has form for making lists of Jews). 😱

Sorry I'm going off topic, I have never heard of any of these people but why is this person asking for lists to be made of British Jews employed in civil service?
Isn't that illegal? I'm just shocked at that

All extremely well known high profile antisemites who have been in the news a lot in recent years. Google them!

Hélène79 · 28/04/2024 21:05

@Parkingt111 He's been at this for years, decades even. Always just one tiny step away from going full David Icke.

Yet I doubt she was implying that there should not be a state of Israel.

@ScrollingLeaves If I'm honest I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if this is what she means. I've not watched the video because I've seen and heard enough from her over the years. She has been agitating against decent Jews for years now and sits on the fringes of the far left. She's also been known to prop-up some pretty vile antisemites, including those who shill for Iran and Russia-backed alt-left media. Think Chris Williamson and Asa Winstanley for instance, or David Miller, who this week is calling for lists to be made of British Jews employed in the civil service (he has form for making lists of Jews). But if I was to guess, I do think she probably means every single interpretation of Zionism that exists, including the simple belief in a Jewish homeland and not just the modern and ultra-right political definition that encompasses expansion.

I would agree with @1dayatatime though that there is no single definition, and it does mean different things to different people. I've tried, in good faith, to explain what it means to me elsewhere on here.

But if I was to guess, I do think she probably means every single interpretation of Zionism that exists, including the simple belief in a Jewish homeland and not just the modern and ultra-right political definition that encompasses expansion.

Thank you ( and others) for explaining more about her.

It seems she has extremist views. I didn’t think a person who is Jewish themselves would be against even the simple belief in a Jewish homeland given how Jewish people after the holocaust really had nowhere to go.

Hélène79 · 28/04/2024 21:40

@ScrollingLeaves No problem. And yes, you would be surprised! Thankfully I've only ever met one or two that hold that view.

London recorded on a march.

Vile woman saying Jewish women are too ugly to be raped. Anti semitism is off the scale when people feel they can say thus with 2 police officers stood watching

Monstrous woman. That is an inconceivably horrible and very stupid thing to say. Absolutely vile.

I think the other woman with dark curly hair in the high visibility jacket and Palestinian head cloth seemed to put up her hand to gently push her back.

It is so difficult to understand women behaving this way to other women. At a march in London last autumn two young Jewish women wished rape on a Jewish woman because she was protesting in support of Palestine.

PeasfullPerson · 01/05/2024 21:25

That is a horrific thing to say. Some people really are vile.

Have you only just found out that as well as idiots on this planet, there are also nasty idiots ? And they're not always male. :-}

This version of nastiness is particularly upsetting, like a nightmare.

Imo the jewish people bore the brunt of the nazi hatred. There are those that want to turn this into a numbers game, I won't go there

The others matter, too.

As a woman (I'm not Jewish) I'm extremely distressed that another woman could speak like that about other women, and also about the thing most of us fear more than anything.
I realise that for Jewish women it will be especially upsetting.
It looks like that was in New York? Maybe I'm naive, but I can't imagine imagine anyone saying that out loud in London?
Anyway, as a non-Jew and a non-Muslim; I'm just feeling so sorry for both minorities at the moment.
I'm very upset about what's happening in Gaza. But, I repudiate anti-Semitism totally.

I agree it is particularly upsetting. Who would have thought any woman would do this? I noticed though, another woman with dark curly hair and a yellow visibility jacket and Palestinian scarf at least came along and gently pushed her out of the way.

This also happened in London last November on a protest when two very upset Jewish young women railed at, and wished rape on,’ another Jewish woman who was protesting against the Israeli bombing of Palestinians.
They were understandably horrified by Oct 7 but the way they shouted on the other, pacifist, Jewish woman was a shock.

Gosh, how awful. How, on earth could women possibly wish that on another woman 😔

Indeed, and yet many people in the UK openly celebrated 7/10. They do it a little more surreptitiously now.

Rachel Riley has warned it is a “dangerous and terrifying time” for Jewish people after witnessing people flying Palestinian flags in west London in the wake of Hamas’s attacks against Israel.
The Countdown presenter said she had seen people dancing and “seemingly celebrating like they were having a party”.
Writing on social media, she said: “I just passed two cars in west London driving with Palestinian flags flying from each window, bouncing up and down in their cars, seemingly celebrating like they were having a party.
“Make no mistake, this is a dangerous and terrifying time for all Jews around the world.”

She added: “People have been brutally murdered, kidnapped and there are people in London dancing.
“Most people understand this is an abomination. No one should cheer war and death.”
Late on Saturday night, a 50-strong group of people waving Palestinian flags could be seen cheering and sending fireworks into the sky on Edgware Road in London.
It comes after the Liberal Democrats’ spokesman on foreign affairs was criticised on Saturday morning for her response to the Hamas attacks.
Posting on Twitter on Saturday morning, Layla Moran said:

Lord Wolfson, a Conservative peer and former minister, tweeted in response: “The Government condemns. Labour condemns. The Liberal Democrats are ‘concerned.’ Shameful. ‘Concerned’ is when the council hasn’t emptied the bins for a week. Not when civilians are being executed at bus stops, in their cars, and their homes.”
Jeremy Brier, a KC, said: “Thousands of rockets fired by Hamas – many murders of Jews – and abductions. And this is your response? No condemnation of the perpetrators. Without morality or shame.”

Another link for those who asked for evidence of the many people who celebrated the Hamas attacks in the UK. Give that Hamas is a proscribed terrorist organisation, I would suggest that evidence of one person is too "many" but that's just my opinion.

https://www.thejc.com/news/im-an-expert-on-islamism-but-even-i-was-shocked-at-how-october-7-was-celebrated-uz5lip00

The Jewish Chronicle an unbiased source (not). I would expect the Zionist Militia who expelled Palistineans from their homes would also be a consideration?

PeasfullPerson · 06/05/2024 12:32

Thank you for providing these examples, it must be very scary to witness or hear about things like this. I can understand the fear.

However, I do think this shows a small minority of extremists celebrated and that it’s misleading to say many people in the UK did this.

It seems common that the unsavoury actions of a minority of people are used as evidence to suggest that they are representative of the majority.

namechangedforconfusion · 06/05/2024 12:46

Rachel Riley is a known racist and Islamophobe. I don't take anything she says with merit.

And the Palestinian flag is not antisemitic or a symbol for pro-Hamas. Get over yourselves and stop this censorship!

quantumbutterfly · 06/05/2024 12:47

How many would be too many?

Despite our expectations, not everything is on camera..yet. The examples that are easily found online are a small part of wider ill-feeling that I have seen and witnessed, ( like many others I expect) but tragically I forgot to photo and post my experiences.

Still, as many people like to tritely say 'data is not the plural of anecdote', though I would counter that by saying empirical evidence has value.

The day after I was in central London - a man was cycling around with a Palestinian flag cheering & whistling. Some people cheered and honked cars in response. Utterly horrifying. There are lots of documented examples - I'm surprised you didn't read about them or see them online.
