How have we come to a state where the police confront someone for being overtly Jewish?

Just how?

I think at best this inept policing at worst vile anti semitism.

I suppose it is now in the open that central London has become effectively a no go area for Jews given the potential for abuse from hate marchers.

Can't we just stop these marches so Jews can go about their business?

deeply deeply shocking, isn't it

clearmoon · 20/04/2024 18:41

Maybe someone who goes on these marches would like to post and say how they think someone being openly Jewish would be reacted to? I understand some marchers have been "openly Jewish" themselves.

SharonEllis · 20/04/2024 19:29

It is really shocking. I think antisemitism is really, really deep seated. And the Met are both inept and trapped by the competing forces of identity politics.

IcecreamWhatSandwich · 22/04/2024 23:24

My perception of what happened here was different. The guy in the video wasn't going about his business. He had come to the march intentionally in order to provoke some participant into committing some aggression against him. Maybe they would have, maybe they wouldn't. But the police were right to stop him from doing this. They were perfectly willing to help him get where he was going without walking across or into the demonstration.

blackcherryconserve · 22/04/2024 23:28

He proved the point that it isn't seen as safe for Jewish people in London to cross a street filled with demonstrators. There were enough police there to have provided him with an escort through the marchers. They chose not too.

Remoteaccess · 22/04/2024 23:30

You need to watch the full clip, I was appalled too, less so after seeing it in full.

They offered to escort him though

Those hideous marches need to stop, I’m absolutely sick and tired of them. How they are being allowed in this country is beyond me when they are filled with such hatred. Vile.

abovethefold · 22/04/2024 23:37

I’m Jewish and when I first read the story I was shocked and scared. But having delved more deeply I’ve come to the awful conclusion that he engineered the situation in order to make a point.

The police tried to help him at first but he barged past, whilst being filmed, and was clearly trying to antagonise people. The situation then escalated and he got the footage he wanted.

I hate to say this as I know how scared Jewish people feel in general and I know how this news story made me feel. But by generating this story this man has made me feel more unsafe than the marchers do. I feel sick to my stomach about it. It plays into the old awful trope of Jewish conspiracies and it makes out that anyone protesting the war in Gaza is protesting against Jews.

Coshei · 22/04/2024 23:39

The marches should absolutely be stopped for more than one reason. But regarding the thread title: that policeman showed great patience and worked hard to keep the peace.

blackcherryconserve · 22/04/2024 23:41

I watched the whole 13 minute clip. The police did not offer to escort him across the road Remoteaccess instead only to go a long way round.

noblegiraffe · 22/04/2024 23:42

It is very difficult to engineer a situation where a police officer will tell you that being visibly Jewish is a problem, if it's not a problem.

It is very difficult to engineer a situation where people shout Nazi at you without something about you making people think that's an appropriate insult. What was it about this man? That he was visibly Jewish?

You can't engineer a situation like that if there aren't any issues. People would remain unprovoked, or choose different insults.

Remoteaccess · 22/04/2024 23:43

Isn't he well know for turning up with a band of folk and being provocative?

Gabiabbi · 22/04/2024 23:46

Have watched the full video. The police officer 100% said the wrong thing there. But the guy was totally antagonistic. And who the hell crosses a road through a march anyways, regardless of what it is? 😂 he wanted a reaction, he pushed until he got one.

No, I don't think so. His name didn't come out for ages, so not particularly recognisable.

OnlyLoveCanBreakYourHeart · 22/04/2024 23:47

Having unexpectedly been caught up in one of these marches, I am surprised that crossing the road was even a possibility. There was a man ahead of the march taping off the road from the pavement and another at the back removing the tape. So I am not sure how he would have been able to cross the road. Having said that, I am not sure why he would have wanted to in the middle of the march. I wouldn't have been escorted across. People were being told to wait until it had passed and the road reopened.

Edited to add that this comment is posted without judgement of the person or those marching, just an observation of having been there for one of the marches. I don't live in London, was just visiting and didn't know there was one going ahead on the day or location I was there.

Fluffywigg · 22/04/2024 23:56

I think people would have had an issue if the police just left him to it. It looks to me like they were trying to protect him.

It’s like having two rival gangs at a football match. Most will be there for genuine reasons but some will want to cause problems. The police will try and keep them separate if possible.

It’s so tragic and ironic that religion (of any form) can cause so much polarisation in society. I’m pleased I’m an atheist because these ‘gods’ and higher powers seem to cause more harm than good.

noblegiraffe · 22/04/2024 23:58

How is being Jewish like being in a rival football gang?

Opine · 23/04/2024 00:00

Now he’s on TV talking about black people and how this would never happen to them.
Even using the term ‘openly black’ like this is a thing. Like we are wearing some kind of removable suit.
Hes got a cheek.

Read my post again! You have TWO groups of people that the police are trying to keep apart for good reason. They don’t want things to escalate.

noblegiraffe · 23/04/2024 00:02

Why would a Jewish person need to be kept apart from pro-Palestinian protestors?

They shouldn’t need to be but it seems the police we’re trying to help the guy.

It’s worth reading the post by

@abovethefold

who sums it up well.

noblegiraffe · 23/04/2024 00:15

Yes, and the police were trying to help keep the guy safe as he was openly Jewish.

Why would police need to keep an openly Jewish man safe from pro-Palestinian protestors.

The 'provocation' that people keep talking about appears to be walking into the crowd while looking Jewish.

Why is that provocative?

The narrative that has been pushed is not accurate.
