Israeli Eurovision: how low can you go?

Israeli entry in Eurovision song contest is likely to be a song called 'October Rain' sung by trans-identifying 'Eden 'Golan'.

My previous thread was deleted for pointing this out.

This is on Israel they should never have entered the competition putting their act in this position. I don't condone violence or threats of violence but it was obvious this is what would happen. If Israel had any cop on they would have sat the competition out this year.

Wow. Ok. Let's blame the victim not the perpetrators? Very brave of you to actually admit that's what you think. I genuinely don't even know where to start with unpacking that.

I'm sincerely hoping that you re-read what you wrote and maybe think about it a bit more.

There’s nothing low about Pro-Palestine supporters, we just don’t support genocide enablers.

But you do support violence as a means to getting what you want? Righto.

I suppose if Palestine was allowed to enter as well as Israel it may have seemed fairer. I think there's a number of struggling musicians in the WB and East Jerusalem.

Not sure she's trans identified since born female and still female?

Yes, she's not trans identifying.

LordSnot · 09/05/2024 19:52

Genuine question: if we switch off for the Israeli performance, will anyone actually know? I don't know how viewing figures are tracked for the BBC or for Eurovision in particular.

Maybe they should apply? Like Israel did. Like Lebanon did many years ago before deciding not to participate after all because Israel were going to be in it. Presumably all they need to do is find a broadcaster willing to pay whatever it costs and apply.

stormy4319trevor · 09/05/2024 19:56

@Humdingerydoo Ah, I didn't know that's how it works, thank you. I suppose they never asked to be in it, then.

Her being threatened is on the people doing the threatening, no one else.

I'd say they might be busy at the moment. Dodging bombs and snipers and scavenging for food and you know generally just trying tl survive another day tends to not leave a huge amount of Time for the application process.

Yes, I've seen this "argument" multiple times. I wasn't the poster who wished for them to participate - maybe redirect your snarky comments to them?

Not an argument it's a fact.

Apologies I was replying to the comment "maybe they should apply" . I must have misunderstood that sentence

stormy4319trevor · 09/05/2024 20:05

@Nctodayjan24 That will be me. Sorry, I have seen various stories about Palestinian artists and musicians struggling to make careers. I think that people are still getting together to gig secretly in Haifa and WB, even under occupation. I was thinking, if the contest is not political, it would seem fairer to have them participate, but @Humdingerydoo stated they probably never applied, I think.

Another clear, explicit and unabashed example of victim blaming.

For my part - Go Eden! Do your country proud . They are already proud of how you are standing strong in the face of the vile threats and protests about you and your country's participation. Fortunately these people are in the vast minority and the majority can see the situation as it is.

Stand tall and shine bright Ms Golan.🤗

Auvergne63 · 09/05/2024 20:22

vast minority
Contradiction in terms or Freudian slip? I go for the second.

For clarity - the people who are protesting against Israel both in this context and in the conflict are in the minority. They are just shouting louder.

PeasfullPerson · 09/05/2024 20:26

It’s sad to hear this singer is receiving death threats.

Having said that I won’t be watching Eurovision, even though I really like Olly Alexander. I don’t want to unfairly ostracise any individuals from Israel but she is happy to represent her country while they starve children in Gaza, and she had to change her original lyrics because they contained political references.

Do you have any evidence to back that up?

A recent poll I’m not aware of?

Countries have to be part of the EBU - or associates - which is why Australia takes part

Morocco entered once too. It's almost as if some posters can't take time out from whining about non-Europeans and Israeli bashing to look up what the European Broadcasting Union is and how membership of it, which then entitles members to compete in Eurovision, is not dependent on being a country in Europe. Members include Egypt, Libya, Lebanon and Tunisia. Apart from Australia, who only have associate status so maybe they just asked really, really nicely.
