Well in fairness isn't that exactly what @Alstreena is doing here? She IS actively raising awareness by entering into a discussion about it and bringing it into the spotlight.

Yeah, so ... whataboutery is not activism but, well, whataboutery! The question is fair!

(For the record: I have never, personally, been engaged in any Yemen-related activism - I most certainly have on a wide variety of issues apart from Palestine! But, no: if someone said to me about my climate activism "yeah so: coal plants are bad - but before you keep on complaining: what about diesel fuelled cargo ships?" I would absolutely not regard this as any sort of activism for more a more sustainable model of cargo transportation!)

I don't think @Alstreena is professing to being an activist though is she? Apologies if I missed that part. I'm unclear as to what your point is exactly?

Alstreena · 09/04/2024 23:14

@EasterIssland "Do you know whether the British government is exporting arms to the countries you have mentioned ? And whether the British government is funding those countries governments to support the war ?"

(I don't actually see how that's relevant because people are dying no matter where the arms come from.)

However, to answer your question :

UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia totalled £1.1 billion in 2022
Arms to Israel totalled 42 million in the same time period.

As far as I am aware UK is not supplying arms to any other conflicts bar Ukraine/Russia.

HTH

First of all @Alstreena this was your initial comment

Strangely enough, I don't see the same levels of outrage about the conflicts in Yemen, Myanmar, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

saudi Arabia is not in that list.

2nd of all this was my previous comment

Many citizens around the world are speaking up about not being happy with their governments behaviour about this conflict"

and I said I’m disappointed with the British government because they’re selling arms to Israel. But you’re trying to make it in antisemitic because I don’t care about other conflicts.

so again I’ll ask you do you know how many billion in arms does uk sell to the countries you’ve mentioned ?

Alstreena · 10/04/2024 08:04

@EasterIssland "saudi Arabia is not in that list."

There isn't a war in Saudi Arabia !

"so again I’ll ask you do you know how many billion in arms does uk sell to the countries you’ve mentioned ?"

Which part of your question haven't I answered?

No. The poster is highlighting outrage at selective empathy and using Yemen as an example. I’ve pointed out that this is a common tactic often used online to deflect from the atrocities happening in Gaza.

”stop being upset about x unless you have a history of being upset about y z”.

But @Alstreena is saying that those of us that protest against the atrocities in Gaza must also be protesting against other global atrocities. We can’t protest for one country, it must be all. Other wise it is selective empathy.

Why?

im Getting lost with you.
in your first comment you say we only care about our governments behaviour regarding Gaza is because Israel is a Jewish country. That we don’t care about several other conflicts and you mention a list of countries.

i ask you how many weapons does our government sale to THOSE countries.

you reply with how much British government sells to Saudi Arabia which as you say it’s not in a war.

you’ve not answered any part of my question. How much does British government sale to Yemen , Myanmar , Ethiopia or South Sudan.

i myself can’t influence in what is happening In Gaza. But I can influence in my government. If my government is selling arms to Israel then I can criticise it if I’m not happy. It’s not because it’s a Jewish country. It’s because my taxes are being used to kill other citizens and I’m not happy with it.

so I’m going to ask you again how many weapons does the British government sell to those countries you’ve mentioned. If none , then your initial comment was whataboutery and trying to call many of us antisemitic and to be honest that card has been used too many times So we are inmune to it.

Mags48 · 10/04/2024 08:42

“Not really, she's trying to use the existence of that conflict to say that people are bigoted for talking about a different conflict. I suspect Yemen only matters to some people when they can try to use it in attempts to shutdown other conversations.”

This.

Was my response of 23.14 yesterday not clear to you?

I really can't fathom out this word salad.

(And I'd rather people didn't talk about me as if I'm not here.)

Mags48 · 10/04/2024 08:51

I apologise if you don’t understand what I was agreeing with @Alstreena I think it’s quite clear though? I don’t know what you mean by word salad - it is plain English.

Thanks. So , I am critising the British government because they’re selling arms to a country that are using them to kill citizens. I’m not happy with it. I can’t influence what is happening in Gaza.but I can influence the British government to stop selling arms to Israel.

it’s not that I don’t care about Burmese people , it’s that the British governments behaviour on this war is the one I would expect from it.

The British Government is funding the Saudis so that they can bomb 7 bells of shit out of Yemen in an attempt to remove the Houthis.
(I have already documented the carnage that has ensued.)
The Houthis, as you are aware, are a terrorist group bank-rolled by Iran that have deposed the legal government in Yemen.

Now, it appears that the Saudis are not being very effective as the Houthis are still there after 10 years and are now attacking International shipping.

So. are you going to protest outside the Saudi Embassy or lobby the UK government to stop sales to Saudi ?

@Mags48 It would be helpful if you posted the origin of the quote so I could have some context.

This " Not really, she's trying to use the existence of that conflict to say that people are bigoted for talking about a different conflict. "

Means nothing to me in isolation.

Yemen. Is that simple enough?

You can find it yourself @Alstreena.

I agree - the thread is moving away from the initial OP. Feel free to start a separate thread about Yemen or Sudan @Alstreena so you can raise awareness of the atrocities happening there.

@Efacsen "Yep on and on and on"

I'm sorry you can't feel sympathy for those caught up in other conflicts or see the broader picture..

As I said, selective empathy.

@Mags48 "You can find it yourself @Alstreena."

No I can't, that's why I was asking you, seeing as you posted it.

"Feel free to start a separate thread about Yemen or Sudan @Alstreenaso you can raise awareness of the atrocities happening there."

I am aware that I could do that, however, I am not prepared to single out one particular world conflict for discussion. To me that would elevate it above others which is unfairly prioritising it.

And I don't have time to post and monitor threads on all the world conflicts that are regrettably taking place at the moment.

Mags48 · 10/04/2024 11:03

“And I don't have time to post and monitor threads on all the world conflicts that are regrettably taking place at the moment.”

So you don’t have the time but you are criticising everyone else for not doing so? What did you call it - selective empathy.

Consistency is a real issue.
