What is going on on the left? Gaza/Israel conflict

I am left wing, I wouldn’t consider myself anything other. I absolutely support Israel, have no problem understanding and supporting Zionism, and am absolutely horrified by the rising levels of anti-semitism in the UK.

It is to my despair that much of that anti-semitism is being perpetrated by those on the left. People I like, consider friends, who are tolerant and who I would never, ever have considered racist or anti-Semitic are plastering their Facebook walls with pro-Hamas TikTok propaganda. These are not teenagers naively believing propaganda, these are people who’ve spend years active in (left wing) politics.

I’ve read a lot in recent weeks about the far left’s historical problem with anti-semitism, but how can it be that nice, friendly, socially conscious people are indulging in this insane display of anti-semitism? Actively showing support for a terrorist organisation? Refusing to believe Hamas is guilty of any crimes, or that they have an excellent propaganda machine currently in operation. What is going on?

Thinking more about the mad idea that Israel simply not retaliate to a major attack, it would be taken not as a humanitarian gesture but as a sign of massive weakness, both from Hamas and more generally in the region. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive in the extreme.
Israel's safety depends in part on a show of strength.

There are ways that Israel could have retaliated to the attacks that would show strength and not involve the carpet bombing of a nation of innocents.

Seen this idle carpet bombing trope all over the threads.
Israel is NOT carrying out bombing attacks to destroy every part of Gaza. Targeted military strikes to eradicate Hamas is not carpet bombing and putting civilians in harm's way is also a military tactic.

@Livinginanotherworld might want to remember why the tank was there in the first place... the same as the issues with rescuing hostages.
Atrocities are not fool proof are they many things can happen.
And what do you hope to bring to the table by showing that. That Israel wasn't expecting that assault and were running on Adrenaline after such a breach. That they were probably like headless chickens? They were seeing hundreds and in some cases while communities slaughtered .

I don't condemn the IDF for making mistakes. I assume the guilt they feel themselves will be enough.

Ps i don't imagine Hamas just stood there and let them get with it!

@SomeCatFromJapan yea we are very lucky in that there is a ton of footage. They hardly needed the IDF :-/

Absolutely horrific. That woman must be completely traumatised. It really makes you wonder how many of the atrocities were committed by Hamas and how many were actually the IDF firing on their own people.

For the performatively confused, here is an explanation of why what was said to me was so beyond the pale.

We all know that there is a common pass-time on the internet of calling everyone that disagrees with you a Nazi, well this is not that. A specific reference was made to the Final Solution to the Jewish Question, i.e. the genocide of 6 million Jews by the Nazis from which the Jewish population has never recovered. The intergenerational trauma that Jews carry about the Holocaust is well-known.

So if you want to grossly offend, insult, and hurt as many Jewish people as deeply as possible as quickly as possible, what do you do? You suggest that Jews are not the victims of the worst crime against humanity, we are the perpetrators. It is not just genocide DARVO, it is a racialised insult against all Jewish people. It is someone saying the most hurtful thing they could think of saying to a Jewish person for being Jewish and on the basis of their Jewishness, i.e. racism.

Sadly though you seem to be condoning the genocide of another people and land. It works both ways.

Not sure what you are implying here, I was at the March ( as I have been on every one) and a friend was marching with the Jewish Bloc, they suggested I march with them this week which I did. There is nothing to call out, am I not allowed to walk with these people, they were all very friendly with me ? Ffs 🤦‍♀️

Check out the watermelon Magen David. Quite something to design such a thing and think it appropriate.

At least people now know they don't represent the Jewish Labour voters or the Jewish community. So that was one good thing that came out of Jez destroying the Labour Party. Only the fellow Jez comrades think they speak for Labour voters now. Though I believe most of them are probably just about clever ento realise this is a falsehood too.

What gets me is how utterly unnecessary it all was. On 6 October every person, Israeli, Palestinian and other, who is dead from this was alive and well, and still would be. Now this, and for what?
