Conflict in the Middle East

What is going on on the left? Gaza/Israel conflict

I am left wing, I wouldn’t consider myself anything other. I absolutely support Israel, have no problem understanding and supporting Zionism, and am absolutely horrified by the rising levels of anti-semitism in the UK.

It is to my despair that much of that anti-semitism is being perpetrated by those on the left. People I like, consider friends, who are tolerant and who I would never, ever have considered racist or anti-Semitic are plastering their Facebook walls with pro-Hamas TikTok propaganda. These are not teenagers naively believing propaganda, these are people who’ve spend years active in (left wing) politics.

I’ve read a lot in recent weeks about the far left’s historical problem with anti-semitism, but how can it be that nice, friendly, socially conscious people are indulging in this insane display of anti-semitism? Actively showing support for a terrorist organisation? Refusing to believe Hamas is guilty of any crimes, or that they have an excellent propaganda machine currently in operation. What is going on?

No, for the Holocaust reference. As you very well know.

I think the implication was that Palestinians are "the problem". :(

No. It wasn’t. Obviously it wasn’t.

SomeCatFromJapan · 11/12/2023 20:31

It is clear and obvious that it is Hamas being referred to as the problem.

Ok thank you for confirming. Your post was rather ambiguous TBH.

Oh so it's not what I said it's how I said it. It's perfectly fine and inoffensive for a poster to talk about 'solving the problem' by starving and bombing an entire population to death, that's grand. Heaven forbid you point out the reality of what that is though.

bness · 11/12/2023 20:33

OuiOuiKitty · 11/12/2023 20:29

Really? For pointing out the truth? That genocide kills people? That starving an entire population to death will 'solve the problem' forever? British people should know that, they tried it themselves.

Truth is batshit scary. It's easier to try to finish off a people to further your aims and convince everyone that you did it for the right reasons. Slavery, Holocaust, Iraq, Rwanda, Bengal, to name a few. We can see real time how these happened, how a population justified this.

Other posters successfully interpreted it in the manner it was so obviously intended, so I think you need to examine your unconscious bias.

dreamingdays · 11/12/2023 20:35

@cauliflowerwaterfall and other posters didn't. So I think you need to examine your wording more carefully before you post TBH.

Open my eyes to what, exactly?

What is it that you want me to learn from this video?

Proof that IDF bombed their own people, have you even watched it ? It’s from an actual survivor, there were little kids in there as well.

I think they all understand, it's just deliberate diversion tactics.

I speak for the Jewish people I know who are horrified and marched with me on Saturday. There are many large Jewish organisations around the world who are horrified at what’s happening in Gaza. They are even demonstrating in Tel Aviv.
I’ll say it again, nobody on here has accused the Jewish people of anything, they have (as have I) accused the Israeli government and the IDF.
I cannot be any clearer than that. If you want to make it all about you, that’s your choice.

@Livinginanotherworld quite clearly said she speaks for the Jewish people she went to the march with on Saturday. Not every single Jewish person out there.

And it is true there are Jewish organisations which are in support of Palestine. There are Jewish people in every march that we've had since its started.

This.

Some posters on here love to twist words to suit their own agenda, so they can cry they are being marginalised, yet they are happy to talk like that about the Palestinians people and support the genocide.

Yes, I've watched it. A very sad account of a family caught in the crossfire on a brutally chaotic day. Perhaps you view it differently?

How do you get caught in the crossfire of an Israeli tank and a house, when you are all in the house and the tank is bombing the house ? There was no crossfire, there was no one else shooting, the Hamas soldiers were keeping their heads down with the occupiers. The tank, let rip, continually, they knew there were innocent people and kids inside, they were screaming.

@Livinginanotherworld "Proof that IDF bombed their own people, have you even watched it ? It’s from an actual survivor, there were little kids in there as well."

Absolutely horrific. That woman must be completely traumatised. It really makes you wonder how many of the atrocities were committed by Hamas and how many were actually the IDF firing on their own people.

SomeCatFromJapan · 11/12/2023 20:54

Thinking more about the mad idea that Israel simply not retaliate to a major attack, it would be taken not as a humanitarian gesture but as a sign of massive weakness, both from Hamas and more generally in the region. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive in the extreme.
Israel's safety depends in part on a show of strength.

Have you ever been a tank commander?
You are confident about the field of vision from a tank and what you can clearly hear from inside it?

But the main question is: Why do you think they would be bombing their own people?

SomeCatFromJapan · 11/12/2023 20:56

Given the vast amounts of footage the terrorists helpfully recorded on the day, not many. I'm pretty sure the IDF also didn't rape anyone, gouge their eyes out, cut their breasts and fingers off or hack their heads off with garden implements.

cauliflowerwaterfall · 11/12/2023 20:56

For the performatively confused, here is an explanation of why what was said to me was so beyond the pale.

We all know that there is a common pass-time on the internet of calling everyone that disagrees with you a Nazi, well this is not that. A specific reference was made to the Final Solution to the Jewish Question, i.e. the genocide of 6 million Jews by the Nazis from which the Jewish population has never recovered. The intergenerational trauma that Jews carry about the Holocaust is well-known.

So if you want to grossly offend, insult, and hurt as many Jewish people as deeply as possible as quickly as possible, what do you do? You suggest that Jews are not the victims of the worst crime against humanity, we are the perpetrators. It is not just genocide DARVO, it is a racialised insult against all Jewish people. It is someone saying the most hurtful thing they could think of saying to a Jewish person for being Jewish and on the basis of their Jewishness, i.e. racism.

Extraordinary. Hamas must be laughing up their sleeve at how easily manipulated the West is via social media.

@Livinginanotherworld how convenient that there are all these totally different yet oddly similar posters popping on here to defend your completely honourable intentions. The Jewish Bloc are lucky to have you!
