From AP about the Health Ministry :

"Hamas, as Gaza’s ruling authority, exerts control over the Health Ministry. But it’s different than political and security agencies that Hamas runs.
The Palestinian Authority, which controlled Gaza before Hamas overran the area in 2007, retains power over health and education services in Gaza, though it’s based in the occupied West Bank. The ministry is a mix of recent Hamas hires and older civil servants affiliated with the secular nationalist Fatah party, officials say.
The Fatah-dominated authority that administers Palestinian cities in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has its own health ministry in Ramallah, which still provides medical equipment to Gaza, pays Health Ministry salaries and handles patient transfers from the blockaded enclave to Israeli hospitals.
Health Minister Mai al-Kaila in Ramallah oversees the parallel ministries, which receive the same data from hospitals. Her deputy is based in Gaza.
The Ramallah ministry said it trusts casualty figures from partners in Gaza, and it takes longer to publish figures because it tries to confirm numbers with its own Gaza staff.
Hamas tightly controls access to information and runs the government media office that offers details on Israeli airstrikes. But employees of the Health Ministry insist Hamas doesn’t dictate casualty figures.
“Hamas is one of the factions. Some of us are aligned with Fatah, some are independent,” said Ahmed al-Kahlot, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. “More than anything, we are medical professionals.”"

@juju99 I'm not going to guess that's the point. We have no reliable data.

OuiOuiKitty · 06/11/2023 17:56

The callousness on this thread is a sight to behold. People can't even bring themselves to express any kind of sympathy for the 1000s dead but nor can they bring themselves to just be quiet. Some of the posters are nearly revelling in it. Really poor form.

MsBattenburg · 06/11/2023 17:57

I think also a lot of people don't realise that airstrikes on Israeli civilians never stopped & the Iron Dome is not infallible, it has been overwhelmed several times

MrTiddlesTheCat · 06/11/2023 17:58

It's absolutely terrible. Hamas need to stop using their civilians as shields.

Parkingt111 · 06/11/2023 17:58

Wouldnt take a genius to work out that the casualties would be in the many thousands
even if there were no figures available

Number of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza over 10,000 😡
MissyB1 · 06/11/2023 18:01

MsBattenburg · 06/11/2023 17:28

Hamas is a terrorist organisation, you don't have to be nice to them. You don't have to uncritically accept their propaganda.

And I know someone who has been lost in the war, but not on the side that MN cares about.

So you have evidence that all the dead Palestinians were actually members of Hamas?

DownNative · 06/11/2023 18:02

The attachment shows what Hamas' structure looks like. In the bottom right, you will find "Ministeries" - this includes the Health Ministry.

Or you know Israel could stop dropping bombs. It really isn't usual that if someone uses someone as a 'human shield' you say fuck it and kill them all. If a terrorist attack happened in the UK and the terrorist ran into a hospital or a shopping centre I hope you would be just as happy for Sunak to order the whole hospital be blown up. I mean they are just human shields right, not actual people with lives and families and hopes and dreams.

It seems you have a good insight in war tactics from the posts you have put out, many which were very educational.
In your own opinion from your understanding of the bombs that have been dropped aswell as the size of Gaza and its population do you personally think that 10 thousand casualties would be a far fetched figure over the thirty day period?

juju99 · 06/11/2023 18:09

MsBattenburg · 06/11/2023 17:56

@juju99 I'm not going to guess that's the point. We have no reliable data.

We have data about how many bombs have been dropped, where they have been dropped, how many people live in Gaza, and how small Gaza is. We also have footage that shows how built-up the area is and the level of destruction caused.

So true. The answer to this question must be yes from MrTiddlesTheCat, otherwise it would demonstrate their contempt for the lives of Palestinians. I await their response with eagerness.

Reallifelurker · 06/11/2023 18:11

The claim is Hamas propaganda.
The death rate is obviously going to be high no matter what Hamas may or may not claim.

The war will continue until either Hamas is wiped out and its infrastructure destroyed, or Hamas release all hostages, return the bodies of those they have already killed and lay down their arms. The second situation is very unlikely, so the fighting will continue.
And if you kill half the population of Gaza and blitz their home land who cares right? I’m sure you’ll let the aid start trickling in eventually. Unless you decide it’s not worth the risk because Hamas might nick it.

Any non-combatants who remain in the north and are caught up in the fighting despite being told to move south have made their own decision to risk their lives
Because they're safe as houses in the south eh?

Israel will not stop fighting just because the unanimous voices of the world's anti-Semites tell them to.
Pffft.

PurpleChrayne · 06/11/2023 13:17

I presume you're aware that Al Jazeera is the mouthpiece of Qatar, and their source is the "Palestinian Health Ministry", which is Hamas.

The UN are overseeing numbers being told. They said today on radio 4 that after the last attack by Israel the numbers given by Hamas were correct so they are not doubting it this time. Obviously not many can survive the relentless bombing by Israel

soddingspiderseason · 06/11/2023 18:12

Hamas breached a ceasefire and started a war by committing atrocities against innocent civilians including many children. Hamas took 240 people as hostages. Hamas continues to fire rockets at Israel using Gazan civilians as human shields. Hamas leaders have said they intend to commit the same atrocities until all Jews are dead. Hamas are the problem. Argue for Hamas to return all the hostages immediately. Then the Israelis may talk about a ceasefire. Argue for Hamas to surrender themselves to prevent further bloodshed. Argue for the Gazan people to rise up against Hamas. Hamas are the enemy of peace.

SomeCatFromJapan · 06/11/2023 18:14

Or you know Israel could stop dropping bombs.

Both sides need to stop, surely, and the hostages released. I genuinely don't understand why the pressure is so one-sided.

Rubbishagain · 06/11/2023 18:14

orangegato · 06/11/2023 13:22

Can’t be hurting Hamas’ conscience too much or they’d give the hostages back.

Maybe Israel could give the hostages back too. For decades IDF have been arresting small children and putting them in prison not to mention the illegal settlers stealing land and homes of the Palestinians. Maybe that could stop too.

Silence1 · 06/11/2023 18:22

According to the NYT the US has asked Israel to use smaller bombs, Israel apparently has large bombs which it is using but they aren't suitable for bombing dense urban areas . That knocks the idea of precision targeting on the head not that I believed that in the first place.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/11/2023 18:25

Wasn’t an Israeli security source claiming they had killed 20,000 Palestinians earlier? So one of those numbers must be wrong. Seems unlikely that the Palestinian health authorities are increasing the number as propaganda on that basis.

Seems more likely that 10,000 is an undercount and doesn’t include those still missing.

Newbutoldfather · 06/11/2023 18:25

I don’t doubt the data, but this was Israel’s 9/11.

The problem is Israel is facing an enemy whose sole modus operandi is hiding in amongst civilian.

Hamas is actually stopping civilians leaving, in order to have them killed, hoping that the resulting propaganda will cause pressure to be put on Israel.

There are some bad actors on the Israeli side but Israel are sparing civilians as much as possible. If they really didn’t care they could use bunker busters and air burst munitions to obliterate Hamas without risking life. As it is, they are doing things the hard and dangerous way.

2023: "use smaller bomb when dropping them on civilian areas" counts as ... I do not even know what, but I am presuming this is meant to be some sort of appeal to humanitarianism!

I have no words!

Civilians are NOT A FUCKING TARGET! And I really do not care whether they are Israeli, Palestinian, Syrian, Tibetan, British, Spanish, or - for all I care - from fucking Mars!

Well, they must be REALLY FUCKING INCOMPETENT then - reason enough to oust the entire government, I should have thought!

EDIT, seeing as this is the internet: yes, that was sarcasm!

EsmaCannonball · 06/11/2023 17:34

Can you imagine how much Hamas and Hezbollah would be deterred if Israel started using its own citizens as human shields? (Answer: not at all. It would probably make them doubly murderous.) This is all on Hamas. A Hamas ceasefire would end the war, an Israeli ceasefire would end Israelis.

This rhetoric that the Jewish people in Israel would all be wiped out if Israel didn't commit genocide respond in the way it did is entirely false. Israel have been murdering Palestinians, illegally demolishing homes, illegally grabbing land, illegally building walls (that the UN have declared an apartheid fence) in the name of "security" LONG before the existence of Hamas. Nobody believes this false narrative that everything was fine until a few weeks ago. Israel have been an occupying force severely violating the human rights of Palestinians for decades!
