"But Israel gave them prime waterfront land, and they still wouldn't accept a two state solution".

A poster said this on another thread and I literally can't get this out of my head. It's probably the best (and worst) case of gaslighting hasbara I have seen on any of the threads.

Just incase anyone has the notion that Gazans were reclining on their sunloungers, admiring the sea views from their luxury penthouse apartments, this is a thread to discuss life in Gaza pre 7/10.

Some facts:

Gaza fact sheet

Humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip Fast facts - OCHA factsheet

Fast Facts The population of Gaza is 1.6 million, with over 50% under 18. 38% of Gazans live in poverty. 26% of the Gazan workforce, including 38% of youths, is unemployed. The average wage declined by over 20% in the past six years.

@MrsTerryPratchett yep, it's right there isn't it.

Reallifelurker · 01/11/2023 13:32

All the Palestinians have to do is to stop attacking Israel and this will happen

The Palestinians aren’t attacking Israel Hamas are. If the Palestinians hadn’t been thrown into limbo maybe Hamas wouldn’t have got a foot hold.

Absolutely, which I why I vehemently condemn Hamas for not only breaking the ceasefire on 7 October, but also for purposely targeting young civilians at a music festival. There was no indication that Israeli troops were present, so this was a war crime.

Me also- the Hamas attack was a war crime. Or a day of war crimes.
Israel is now within 6 days of a month of war crimes.

@gratedbluecheese I think - correct me if I'm wrong @Horrificallyuntidy that was a sarcastic (for want of a better word) comment directed to the poster who seems to need justification for the war crimes Israel is committing??

I’m relieved really. Maybe it should have been obvious but some of these things I’ve read recently it wouldn’t surprised me if it had been a genuine sentiment.
Sorry again

@usernamealreadytaken so you condemn the Israeli govts war crimes against Palestinians as documented here and by United Nations, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty and more?

Edited

Did you read the article you posted? It's damning of Gaza and Hamas, and rather wishy-washy on Israel, as Israel hasn't ratified the treaty. Iran is now effectively calling for all Muslim nations (and by extension all Muslims, as they do believe they are all brothers) to enact collective punishment on Israelis by denying them food and fuel - they are all as bad as each other but I have to say that nearly 2bn against fewer than 2m does seem a little unbalanced.

Don't forget, when calling for a ceasefire - if Hamas adheres to a ceasefire, nobody dies. If Israel adheres to a ceasefire, Jews die. There was a ceasefire in operation until 7 October.

gratedbluecheese1 · 01/11/2023 13:48

@Horrificallyuntidy Many apologies I misunderstood your sarcasm there. I deleted my account in frustration so have just started a new one to reply. I am just so sad at how people minimise and justify the civilian deaths and warcrimes from minute to minute.

Targeted attacks to remove Hamas are not war crimes.

gratedbluecheese1 · 01/11/2023 13:51

@starfleet thank you for explaining. I have apologised to @Horrificallyuntidy above and I am sorry for the misunderstanding. It is all making me so sad and upset and also I think I am spending too much time arguing with people who will persistently deny or minimise the horrific things going on.

Targeted attacks to remove Hamas are not war crimes.

they are when actions are not taken to minimise risk to innocent civilians.

Targeted attacks to remove Hamas are not war crimes.

Targeted?

Firstly, how targeted are they when thousands of children are dead?

Secondly, how are they targeted when Israel's world beating intelligence systems failed entirely to get a sniff of October 7th? But now they know exactly who is where? It makes no sense, and if it makes no sense, it isn't true. One of those things is a lie. Possibly both.

Teddleshon · 01/11/2023 14:03

It is also a war crime to deliberately use civilians as cover.

"Israel's world beating intelligence systems failed entirely to get a sniff of October 7th?" Yup, blame the Jews for not defending themselves properly from this war crime 🙄

Many Israelis are blaming Netanhayu for exactly that

The brilliant 24/7 surveillance of Hamas failed because the planning was done in person overseas and they kept strict radio silence when in Gaza and gave the false impression that they were knuckling down and governing Gaza

starfleet · 01/11/2023 14:17

It is a war crime to kill innocent civilians.

BN is a fanatical despot. He doesn't give a shit about whether Hamas are hiding in tunnels, or under beds, or in someone's bloody wardrobe. He does not give a shit about the hostages either.

He wants the Palestinian people eradicated. This is his sole aim.

He is sending young israeli soldiers to their deaths - a large percentage of them who have never experienced combat duty. That's like me arming my DS with an uzi and saying off you go son - it's for the good cause FFS. I am definitely not pro-israel, but neither am I an advocate of mindless killing whoever is doing it.

"the Jews"? It really is getting very very obvious that accusations of antisemitism are being used to shut people up. Jewish people don't have the best intelligence systems in the world. Israel does. Jewish people aren't murdering babies. The Israeli state is. It would be utterly antisemitic to blame Jewish people for this. I hope as an atheist I'm not responsible for Stalin.

I'm not confused about who is at fault. Hamas aren't the Palestinians aren't the Muslim people as a whole. Netanyahu and the IDF aren't the Israeli people aren't Jewish people as a whole. Thank fuck for those facts. The vast majority of Muslim and Jewish people are empathetic, kind and not prone to baby-killing.

My point, which you neatly avoided by pretending I was being antisemitic, was that if Hamas are (according to what happened) so brilliant at covering their tracks, the chances that the strikes are targeted are zero.

Hippyhippybake · 01/11/2023 11:00

But the question of whether Israel has the right to exist or not is central to the whole issue and in particular the horrendous conditions on the Gaza Strip. This is the issue behind the whole conflict.

I believe the state of Israel in its current form and constitution should not exist, simply because it seeks to uphold the lives of some at the cost of others due to ethnicity/race/religion, and this is wholly wrong. This is the root cause and the aggressor, and this is becoming obvious to the whole world now with it's blatant genocide. The government hasn't even shied away from it's intention to ethnically cleanse the 'Arabs'.

Well one might question why the didn’t see the attack coming if they really know enough about Hamas to say which base is under which hospital or which Hamas bigwig is hidden among a camp of of hundreds
