"But Israel gave them prime waterfront land, and they still wouldn't accept a two state solution".

A poster said this on another thread and I literally can't get this out of my head. It's probably the best (and worst) case of gaslighting hasbara I have seen on any of the threads.

Just incase anyone has the notion that Gazans were reclining on their sunloungers, admiring the sea views from their luxury penthouse apartments, this is a thread to discuss life in Gaza pre 7/10.

Some facts:

Gaza fact sheet

Humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip Fast facts - OCHA factsheet

Fast Facts The population of Gaza is 1.6 million, with over 50% under 18. 38% of Gazans live in poverty. 26% of the Gazan workforce, including 38% of youths, is unemployed. The average wage declined by over 20% in the past six years.

It is so good that the IDF is finally coming to help them out and by killing their children and injuring the rest of them.

i see… taking a page out of the diary from the Iraq war huh… WMDs to liberate the oppressed people.

i guess the subtle difference here is that these guys are the oppressors of the same people elsewhere but anyway let’s focus on the great job they are doing here.

I didn't say anything about the IDF, did I,?

The thread is meant to be about what it's been like to live in Gaza in recent years. Do those accounts of torture, murder and terrorising of Palestinians not bother you, because it's Hamas doing them?

Reallifelurker · 02/11/2023 11:22

That’s what a democracy is about

Your right to be homophonic?

Supporting genocide, ethnic cleansing, land stealing, children killing and the oppression of millions of Palestinian people will always be on the wrong side of history.

(And that does not mean anyone here condones Hamas!)

No.

So you’re not trying to get everyone to focus solely on Hamas to deflect attention away from anything and everything Israel may have done wrong?

I mean I posted an article on Hamas myself, obviously it’s relevant, but this thread is meant to be about the experiences of Palestinians themselves rather than Let’s Blame Hamas For Everything.

Under Israeli attack: Who are the Christians of Gaza? https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/1/under-israeli-attack-who-are-the-christians-of-gaza

"Living under siege, Christians in Gaza attest to a spirit of solidarity that has united faiths in their struggle for survival and their dream of freedom.
“We are all Palestinians. We live in the same city, with the same suffering. We are all under siege and are all the same,” said Ayyad.
Generally speaking, the Christian community has always played an important role in Palestinian life, producing luminaries such as Issa El-Issa, founder of the highly influential Jaffa-based newspaper Falastin, a key driver of Palestinian Arab nationalism during the British Mandate, and Edward Said, who laid bare Western complacency towards the East in his seminal book, Orientalism."

Under Israeli attack: Who are the Christians of Gaza?

They’re small in number, but with deep roots that they are unwilling to leave behind.

@starfleet You could probably do with not seeing that. How is it helping you or them for you to be flicking through gore porn from the safety of your nice house? It isn’t.

What would help them is if everyone could encourage greater tolerance and understanding worldwide. Screaming into the void on social media helps no one.

@Ratsoffasinkingsauage true. However, as much as I don't want to see those things SM seems to be the only way to keep up with what is actually happening in real time. We all know that most mainstream channels here are biased and gear towards the right wing.

Also, yes, I am extremely fortunate to be sat in my nice house with running water and food. I am more than appreciative for this luxury. Because it is just that.

When you know that Palestinian people in Gaza don't know how many minutes they have left to live it is only human to want a better life for them. So if my calling out what I see as injust is not to your liking, so be it.

The article i posted was exactly that. It is about the appalling brutality that has been inflicted on the people of Gaza by hamas.

The whole thread is meant to be about life in Gaza.

I read the article in the new issue of private eye when it was delivered yesterday and thought itwould be relevant and of interest to the people on this thread.

You know they killed Palestinians on October 7th as well? Like the bus driver who was working at the Nova festival? He was a Palestinian Arab from East Jerusalem- hamas knew this and shot him point blank. They videoed it. I've seen an interview with his brother and it is heartbreaking.

I've also seen an interview with a man whose Muslim, hijabi wife was shot point blank by Hamas in front of him and their baby son. It is a huge mistake to think that Hamas are motivated by trying to help the Palestinian people. They treat them appallingly.

"A land without a people, and a people without a land" is how the relationship between Palestine and the Jewish people was described by Christian writers in the 1800s. And the 20th-century history of the Middle East has largely been written through these eyes.

But this film from Al Jazeera Arabic looks at Palestine from a different angle. It hears from historians and witness accounts, and features archive documents that show Palestine as a thriving province of Greater Syria and the Ottoman Empire at the dawn of the 20th century.

The evidence suggests that its cities had a developing trade and commercial sector, growing infrastructure, and embryonic culture that would enable it to meet the challenges of the decades ahead.

However, the political ramifications of the Balfour Declaration, San Remo Conference and British Mandate set in motion a series of events that profoundly affected this vibrant, fledgeling society and led to the events of 1948 and beyond.

This film is the other side of the Palestinian story.

Why do pro Palestinian supporters deluge these boards with clips and links? Isn’t the whole point of sites like Mumsnet that they are a place for people to exchange opinions and discuss their own views?

Feel free to share your thoughts then? Complaining about the "deluge" of clips/links and lack of discussion, with your post devoid of any discussion is a tad ironic in itself. I really like discussion, but have stopped trying to engage because it's pointless. Posters like yourself coming on to derail is highly annoying, but I suspect that's entirely the point.

If anything derails / kills a thread it’s the constant posting of videos but as you all sound so lovely I’ll leave you to it.
