"But Israel gave them prime waterfront land, and they still wouldn't accept a two state solution".

A poster said this on another thread and I literally can't get this out of my head. It's probably the best (and worst) case of gaslighting hasbara I have seen on any of the threads.

Just incase anyone has the notion that Gazans were reclining on their sunloungers, admiring the sea views from their luxury penthouse apartments, this is a thread to discuss life in Gaza pre 7/10.

Some facts:

Gaza fact sheet

Humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip Fast facts - OCHA factsheet

Fast Facts The population of Gaza is 1.6 million, with over 50% under 18. 38% of Gazans live in poverty. 26% of the Gazan workforce, including 38% of youths, is unemployed. The average wage declined by over 20% in the past six years.

Did you read the article you posted? It's damning of Gaza and Hamas, and rather wishy-washy on Israel, as Israel hasn't ratified the treaty. Iran is now effectively calling for all Muslim nations (and by extension all Muslims, as they do believe they are all brothers) to enact collective punishment on Israelis by denying them food and fuel - they are all as bad as each other but I have to say that nearly 2bn against fewer than 2m does seem a little unbalanced.

Don't forget, when calling for a ceasefire - if Hamas adheres to a ceasefire, nobody dies. If Israel adheres to a ceasefire, Jews die. There was a ceasefire in operation until 7 October.

The article isn’t wishy washy at all. The quotes from the ICC investigator are very strong actually I’m surprised.

Iran has called for a Block on trade from other Muslim countries. For various reasons this is unlikely to happen even if your so sure that Iran tells all the Muslims - in the whole world- what to do 🙄 - Israel has free trade’s agreements with much as the western world and the US is it’s primary trade partner.

it will certainly not mean that there won’t be enough food and won’t impact on fuel.

Thanks @Ratsoffasinkingsauage for your insight into my intolerances. It's appreciated. I should really take a break from SM. Maybe then I wouldn't see trashy things like bits of human bodies strewn around blown up refugee camps or similar atrocities.

As I said on my previous post. Take it how you will.

Only one hospital has a partial generator, distribution of medical oxygen has ceased, and mechanical ventilation is stopping. Bodies cannot be buried fast enough and the lack of refrigeration will result in disease. How can this still be happening? The UN Official Craig Mokhiber has resigned, saying Israel is committing a "textbook genocide".

Top UN official in New York steps down citing ‘genocide’ of Palestinian civilians

Craig Mokhiber, director of human rights body, accuses the US, UK and much of Europe as ‘wholly complicit in the horrific assault’

I know right?
It baffles me that these people are literally locked in to a geographical area, water and power cut off, no aid getting in, hospitals bombed (by whoever) and all some people can say is “blame Hamas” or worse “oh so you don’t care about October 7 then?”.
Mind you I haven’t been accused of being antisemitic recently so there’s that I guess.

@starfleet You could probably do with not seeing that. How is it helping you or them for you to be flicking through gore porn from the safety of your nice house? It isn’t.

What would help them is if everyone could encourage greater tolerance and understanding worldwide. Screaming into the void on social media helps no one.

It's always helpful, even if in a micro way to amplify the situation of those who are having their human rights violated. The "stop looking, it isn't helpful" is just trying to close your eyes and thereby condoning oppression. It isn't helpful to me as such but I feel I have a duty to my brethren in humanity. To stay silent is to be complicit.

Speaking of the UN, I see Iran has today become chair of the UN Human Rights Social Forum. Must be of great comfort to those brave women who are fighting for the right not to wear the hijab.

gratedbluecheese1 · 02/11/2023 09:19

It is my feeling that everyone defending the murderous actions of the Israeli govt will look back in a few years and see they were firmly on the wrong side of history.

A very disturbing account in today's Private Eye of the brutality and torture that Hamas has inflicted on the people of Gaza for years. (See attached)

It concludes that Hamas has practised its brutality on the people of Gaza for years, and has now turned them into not only human shields but weapons, hoping to use their deaths to bring about the destruction of Israel.

It is upsetting but important to understand how people in Gaza have been living under Hamas.

It is so good that the IDF is finally coming to help them out and by killing their children and injuring the rest of them.

i see… taking a page out of the diary from the Iraq war huh… WMDs to liberate the oppressed people.

i guess the subtle difference here is that these guys are the oppressors of the same people elsewhere but anyway let’s focus on the great job they are doing here.

Louloulouenna · 02/11/2023 09:26

@gratedbluecheese1 sure, unless you’re gay or a woman or like democracy.

Louloulouenna · 02/11/2023 09:26

@gratedbluecheese1 sure, unless you’re gay or a woman or like democracy.

@Louloulouenna I am sure all the gay people and women in Palestine would prefer peace to their present imminent death. And I do not condone fascism, totalitarianism, homophobia or oppression of women.

However this isn't a simple war between "democracy and totalitarianism". It is the mass murdering of the Palestinian civilian population by Israeli govt, who have clearly admitted to wanting more of their land (as admitted already by Israli govt officials). If they wanted to save more civilians they would choose more careful methods to "get rid of Hamas". Indeed, if Hamas were under the ground in Tel Aviv, as someone pointed out, would they bomb the apartment blocks? No, because to them Israeli life means more than Palestinian life.

Defending war crimes is indefensible and makes you complicit.

And no I do not condone the atrocious actions of Hamas.

feralunderclass · 02/11/2023 09:42

Louloulouenna · 02/11/2023 09:26

@gratedbluecheese1 sure, unless you’re gay or a woman or like democracy.

Why do people keep bringing gays into an ethnic cleansing of Palestinians? Do Hamas have something about homosexuality in their constitution? It just seems like another very bizarre way to silence criticism of Israel's crimes.

@feralunderclass just another example of the whataboutery method, added in every pro IDF comment, robot style, designed to throw the thread off track and distract from the murdering.

We should probably ignore them but it's hard not to.

Are you telling me a far right government is going to protect gays lives ? That’s a good joke !

Hippyhippybake · 02/11/2023 09:51

”All the gay people in Palestine” - are you joking? This is a war between the Iran backed Hamas and the US backed Israel. It started because of the fear of what the Abraham Accords would bring.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 02/11/2023 09:55

@feralunderclass

You seem to know very little about Hamas and the situation beyond Tick Tock and social media videos and sound bites. Do you know what they do to gay people in Iran? Do you know the stance radical islam takes on homosexuality? You seem very ignorant.

Hippyhippybake · 02/11/2023 09:56

@EasterIssland Obviously gay people in Israel have full rights, it is an incredibly gay friendly country.

Hippyhippybake · 02/11/2023 10:02

One government post, as I’m sure you’re aware the British government has a number of members who are anti gay marriage and equal rights for gays. That’s what a democracy is about.

Yes absolutely whataboutery with a dose of Islamophobia thrown in. Has absolutely no bearing to the discussion whatsoever.

Glad to see this thread is still going on and that those messages from yesterday trying to derail have been deleted. Thanks @mnhq

Hippyhippybake · 02/11/2023 10:36

How is this whataboutery? The statement was made that if you support Israel you're on the wrong side of history.

So ok, if Israel lose this war and Hamas win (with the backing of Iran), Israel will cease to exist and Jews worldwide will be facing a death sentence (as per the expressed intentions of Hamas, The PLA and Iran etc).

Israel is the only functioning democracy in the Middle East, it is the only country in the Middle East where women have equal rights and it is the only country in the Middle East where gay people have equal rights. And yet you think supporting them is being on the "wrong side of history".

And I know this is going to cause an absolute meltdown but if you are gay, how is "Islamophobia" not rational? Are there any Islamic countries where the punishment for homosexuality is not death?

The only way forward is a two state solution.

Absolutely. Desperate attempts at derailing any thread that tries to shed light on what's going on in Gaza. Ignore or report. Please don't engage. The aim of the thread is clear.
