First thread here but it’s full

Medical Aid to Palestine posted this thread on facebook describing the scenes in Gaza as being like the last days of humanity with one of their staff members having to search through piles of bodies to find his 13 year old niece https://www.facebook.com/100064712829372/posts/pfbid028yxpzimtA3apA6CSs8dEhJBd16rYUQR6QjFidEpwRCZzPVYoeJezX8nDrtZP2UZRl/?app=fbl

The main stream press aren’t really addressing the horror of what is happening (bar maybe Channel 4 news and Al Jazeera) - it’s a sanitised version.

As I said in the original thread, there has been absolute horror on both sides but the Israeli government are inflicting collective punishment on the people of Gaza, which is a war crime under international law.

I still feel we are watching genocide in real time.

To think it’s turning into genocide in real time | Mumsnet

Just seen this on the news- how can this be right? It genuinely is starting to feel like genocide. What Hamas did was beyond appalling. But this i...

Israel now bombing southern Lebanon, expanding its aggression.

Well, to be fair, Hezbollah started this latest round.

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 30/10/2023 06:24

Warning: Graphic content of injured children being treated on the floor at a hospital in Gaza- I wasn’t sure if to post this or not but to be honest, it’s the reality of what is happening- it’s outrageous

Why on earth is Israel using white phosphorus on areas that are densely populated with innocent people?

I feel physically sick this morning. It is absolutely vile. Don’t you dare say “oh but Hamas”. Israel needs to take some responsibility when it pulls the trigger.

If reading about this war is 'making you physically sick' may I suggest, kindly, that you step away from these boards and all TV reports.

This is the reality of war and it'll get worse before it gets better.

Yes, let Israel murder thousands more children in peace without nosy people watching and making annoying protests.

This war will get worse (for Gaza) before it gets better (for Israel). Suck it up.

Hamas knew what would happen when it planned it's attack.

Hamas are committing double atrocities, firstly the massacre of innocent Israeli civilians and then using it's own citizens as 'human shields'.

This is on them.

Sippingmytea · 30/10/2023 08:16

@mydiaryisfull did you actually read the article you linked?

Coughingdodger · 30/10/2023 08:17

Israel says it is “Hamas fault” that Israel is killing thousands of innocent children.

By your logic (which agrees with what the UN pointed out) what Hamas did was Israel’s fault, as it was responding to Israel’s previous atrocities.

And now Israel is committing atrocities on a much, much larger scale than anything that has gone before. Where does it end? Whose fault will it be when they get hit back?

Chilling isn't it?

Cantrainforever · 30/10/2023 08:38

Our laws of war are based on historical norms which seem to have changed. At the heart of all this is a question: if your enemy keeps attacking you then hiding behind a human shield of innocent women and children, at one point can you kill the human shield in order to destroy the enemy? Or do you accept that the existence of the human shield means you must accept attacks without retaliating, forever?

It’s a nasty, nasty question, and one with which our treaties and laws never expected to deal. Even the nazis didn’t hide their troops underneath hospitals and schools.

I’m not saying Israel is justified but clearly this isn’t as simple as shouting genocide either.

If we say you can’t hide behind a human shield, then that is saying that the murder of a human shield is justifiable.

If we say that no one may attack a human shield, then any terrorist or enemy state or whatever can win simply by hiding its troops behind children.

What a world.

Sippingmytea · 30/10/2023 08:42

@Cantrainforever by that logic Palestinians also have the right to defend themselves? They should be able to fight back against their occupation and fight back when their civilians are killed by Israel.

Or is it only Israel that has the right to defend itself?

flufferknutter · 30/10/2023 08:29

Chilling isn't it?

The fact that Hamas exists is 'chilling'.

Even if Israel was removed it wouldn't stop there.

Then they would come for the 'troublesome Christians'

After that...who knows?

How does the presence or absence of empathy make one iota of difference to a war that none of us caused and none of us can do anything about?

Please enlighten me.

Heartless. I am just heartened by the fact that the majority of decent people do care and are watching on in horror.

'watching on in horror.'

You are heartened by people exhibiting ghoulish behaviour? Sounds like people 'rubbernecking' after a motorway crash.

That says a lot about some people and none of it good 🙄

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 30/10/2023 09:08

@Sippingmytea it really is chilling. And actually I think it’s super important to be informed too and to be visible on demo’s etc to show the strength of feeling.

I went to a peace vigil yesterday- a Palestinian man spoke & read out a list of the names of all the families that he knew that had been killed - neighbours- an entire family if 30 people. He wasn’t able to contact his mum & sister over the weekend and he was extremely distressed.

4 Jewish people also came and spoke out at their horror at the situation.

The whole thing is fucked up!

This.

I LITERALLY want to vomit when reading some posts from brazen unashamed individuals in here trying to absolve inhuman criminals of their crimes unashamedly. They don't even believe what they are saying themselves but still blatantly lying through their teeth and insulting our intelligence, nay, our humanity. BECAUSE WE DON'T NEED INTELLIGENCE TO SEE THE GENOCIDE; JUST HUMANITY.

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 30/10/2023 09:09

@mydiaryisfull its about bearing witness and not looking away. How do you think genocide happens? People look away and don’t speak out. We all have a moral responsibility to bear witness so ‘never again’ means never again!

Oh please give it a rest.

Hamas’s existence is a direct and horrible consequence of Israel’s ongoing occupation and aggression against the Palestinian people.

and if you’re so concerned with what’s happening to Christians, perhaps advocate for Israel to stop bombing their churches.

People are entitled to feel what they like but getting all bent out of shape over a foreign war isn't helping anyone.

Do people get so upset about the war in Yemen I wonder?

Houthi Rebels v Saudi Coalition (both Islamics)

It lasted 9 years (uneasy truce now) 150,000 dead due to war.
Another 227,000 dead due to ongoing famine and lack of medical care,

The Houthis said that they were "defending their community against discrimination" and government aggression. The Yemeni government has accused Iran of directing and financing the insurgency.

(Seems Iran has it's finger in a lot of pies 🙄)

Maybe because people can see it on the news every night it doesn't matter to some?

Sorry, last sentence should read "can't".
