The main stream press aren’t really addressing the horror of what is happening (bar maybe Channel 4 news and Al Jazeera) - it’s a sanitised version.

As I said in the original thread, there has been absolute horror on both sides but the Israeli government are inflicting collective punishment on the people of Gaza, which is a war crime under international law.

I still feel we are watching genocide in real time.

@Notbeinfunnehbut I don’t think they know where the hostages are but they certainly don’t seem to be prioritising their safety. It makes no sense to carpet bomb an area where you have innocent hostages unless you know they are not there or you have higher priorities. I suspect the latter.

@petuniasandpetals I’m sure Hamas do use civilians as human shields and that their charter contains pure hatred (I’m not interested in reading the charters of any terrorist organisations for those posters that keep referencing it).

But what is the current goal of Israel? Is it to get the hostages back? Carpet bombing 2 million people seems a very ineffective method of keeping hostages safe.

Is it to take more land from Gaza? So many buildings have been destroyed now that I don’t see how Gaza will ever be rebuilt.

Is Israel’s goal to wipe Gaza off the map? Their actions suggest this is plausible. I’ve seen plenty of individuals that are encouraging this.

And if that is the case how are the actions currently happening in Gaza any different from Hamas? Please help me see the difference?

Posters keep saying that Israel wants to free Gaza from Hamas but if everybody in Gaza is dead that makes no sense.

Edited to add - I believe all terrorism is wrong whoever the perpetrator. Individuals, groups, networks and countries. All should be held accountable for their actions against innocent civilians.

@Sippingmytea I have asked that over and over again on every thread. What is Israel's plan - what do they want? I've seen govt ministers say they will turn Gaza into a 'car park' - okay, what then? This constant 'Palestinians needs saving from Hamas' is turning into a trope. It's also taking away Palestinian autonomy, as though they can't be trusted to decide their own government. How will they be saved from Hamas? It's an ideology, as well as an organisation, how do you kill an idea? What's the plan for administration and government in the region if you destroy Hamas?

Bombing Gaza like this is a dirty way of solving the Palestinian problem and freeing up land for Israel.

@Weddingpuzzle exactly. Does Israel not understand that the starting point for peace needs to be 1) stop bombing 2) stop the occupation / apartheid system within Israel and the West Bank and 3) end the blockade of Gaza. The only way to get rid of Hamas is to give the Palestinians freedom and hope.

Interestingly it’s the first time I can recall the Guardian referring to what’s going on as ethnic cleansing.

There are some MASSIVE claims from Israel's defence minister coming out live right now:

1. Hamas have proven they are worse than ISIS - okay, how? What's the basis for this?

1. We are exerting a massive bombing campaign on the ground to protect our ground troops. Okay - how are you protecting your hostages?

1. Lebanon are a shield to Hamas and ISIS so we will react - how do you know that and what's your plan to react?

1. We want to dismantle and collapse Hamas - okay, understand you want to react but AGAIN - once they are dismantled and collapsed what happens then exactly? Nobody is talking at all about what will happen the day after this is achieved. Nobody really wants to answer it. Why?

I think the lack of forward thinking and acting purely out of retribution is incredibly dangerous. I expect my toddler to behave like that, not international powers. It is going to further radicalise people who see no hope and could make our world a much more dangerous place. If Israel manages to wipe out Hamas by destroying Gaza - what replaces Hamas? Has Israel thought that far ahead? Has our government?

No, she’s just following the multiple reports of mass murder and ethnic cleansing (as reported by eg the Guardian today), just like everyone else with access to mainstream media.

I’ve just seen a video of the IDF bulldozing homes in Northern Gaza. What is the point of that? Shouldn’t they be searching for hostages?

Egypt isn't a wealthy country, they already host a large number of refugees from various places in Africa and the Middle East. They can't cope with another 2 million refugees.
