This is a thread for ladies who have been ttc longer than 10 months who have started the ball rolling with tests and treatments. We are all here to support each other though these darker days to the baby shaped light at the end of the tunnel!

Hi lil not sure if you or any of the others could help me with a blood test question as well please? I went to see gp this evening to order blood tests for LH,fsh, prolactin, thyroid and progesterone but she has told me it's ok for them all to be done on the same day as the progesterone test?! I thought fsh and lh needed to be done on day 2/3? I said this and she said she didn't see why and always did them altogether. Is this right?

Also do the thyroid and prolactin tests need to be done on a certain day?

I'm confused a bit about progesterone too. Does it need to be 7 days after ovulation or 7 days before AF?

cluecu · 11/02/2015 19:23

Lucie I can't comment on the other tests (yet) but we did my day 21 progesterone test 7 days before my period was due. My cycles normally 30 -32 days so probably wasn't day 21 for me but doctor said it's better to do it 7 days before period. I did it twice as my period the first time round fell the wrong day Smile

lucieloos · 11/02/2015 19:35

Thanks Clue, just I am reading on some places 7 days after ovulation and others say 7 days before AF...sooo confusing!

victoria401 · 11/02/2015 20:18

I sneaked a peak at my progesterone result on the computer system at work and yes they do do the other hormones at the same time. But they do need the first half of the cycle (follicular phase) as well as the luteal phase. I am not sure what they look for when though...

I have my docs notes in front of me right now about when to do day 21.... It says... 7 days before your earliest expected period. I had told her that I had varying lengths of cycle so she said come in cd21, 25 and 29 (if I hadn't started by then). You need enough time after ov for the progesterone to reach it's peak and before it starts dropping off again if fertilization hasn't happened to maintain the progesterone.

Plus I just thought it makes sense as I do have regular periods and can clearly see their presence whereas ovulation not so easy to determine hence all the tests!

lildottie · 11/02/2015 20:42

FSH and LH are done on day 2/3 to look at the ratio of one to the other. I think this is to look at ovarian reserve. LH surges later in cycle (causing ov) so that's why it's day 2/3. I didn't have these done so not 100% sure. the alternative us they test amh on same day as prog as this can be done on any CD. this is supposed to be a good measure of ovarian reserve and/or quality. I'd get phone drs and ask if they are also testing amh. I think the LH/FSH ratio is also used to diagnose pcos but again not 100% sure

oh and yes 7 days before AF. I think that is better because ic you had a short lp (which can mean implantation can't occur) you'd get a low result and therefore the referral!

I have to say I recommend charting to pinpoint ovulation to che k for things like lpd (leutal phase defect) as that can be fixed with vit b complex (must be complex and all sorts of other Gubbins about taking it online). and if you think you aren't ovulating soy isoflsvones could be worth a try while you await referral. its natures clomid apparently.

victoria401 · 11/02/2015 20:49

New thread! Mark your places and bookmark!

I didn't get my AMH until well into the referral process but it may be different elsewhere. I think it's an expensive test they only do once a week. Yes the LH:FSH ratio looks for PCOS and I think really high on FSH is bad as it can mean you are entering early menopause! And I mean REALLY high. Not just a bit higher than LH.

Ok great thanks everyone. I had my AMH tested last year so sorted for that one. I have an appt for prog blood test on Monday when I should be 5dpo and 7 days before af. I hope that's right.

I'm not sure what to do about the fsh and lh now. I'm booked in for them on Monday now. Not sure whether to go ahead or ask the nurse if she could possibly do them on cd2 instead? Or else I could just get them all done
Monday and if needs be fork out £30 or so and get it done privately on cd2. It's going to take 2 weeks for me to get the results back as it is.

Lalala! Filling up this page for lil (but actual interesting post on new thread)

lildottie · 12/02/2015 12:19

how about a poem to fill it up

When do I stop?
When do I realize it's enough?
Why does it have to be me
who has it so tough?
There are many out there
who are evil and perverse.
Yet do You burden them
with an infertility curse?
A 16 year old delivers
a healthy baby boy
then throws him in the garbage
like some old broken toy.
A drug addict
has 3 beautiful little ones
and beats them black and blue
for nothing they have done.
A worn-out woman
with already more than she can bear
sighs dissapointedly
when she sees two lines are there.
God give me one, just one
to cherish all my days
And I promise that to You I'll give
all glory, credit and praise.
Make it stop
this intense longing and fear.
Please give me a child
that I can hold near!

Lauraqc · 12/02/2015 20:46

Aww lovely poem. It definitely strikes a chord with me how lots of people who don't really want children just make a mistake and end up with them :( really upsetting.
