Where are all the Autumn lovers?

Please cheer me up with all the wonderful things to look forward to in Autumn.
I have had enough of heatwave after heatwave. Especially as a dog owner. Ive just stuck on Gilmore Girls as a means of escape!

So please join me here if you can't wait for Autumn and share any of your Autumn joys!

It's finally raining here and been quite dark for the past hour. Trying to ignore how fricken hot it is though! Craving my Autumn PJ's but the short, thin, summer dressing gown will do for now.

I'm looking forward to Autumn baking, lots of mixed spice, nutmeg, cinnamon... in cakes, deserts, biscuits...

Stews and pies cooking away while we have the dogs out on walks. Coming back to a dark home, heating on... Candles and background lights setting the vibe...

Rereading The Familiars by Stacey Halls. What a beautiful cover it has too. Here for any witchy type/Autumn book recommendations! Found alot I love on Audible but love a good, real, book.

I could go on but the one thing I will miss about Summer... Well, not the ironing and putting away, is getting all the laundry washed and dried, sofa cushions, curtains, rugs... I love feeling like I'm giving the house a thorough clean! But again, will be glad not having to make beds every few days, or feeling like carpet washing every few weeks just because it's hot and I feel like I should be making the most of it!

Couldn't get in to Gilmore Girls so any other suggestions for telly watching, I'm here for those too! This could be an amazing thread to get in the mood while waiting for Autumn to get a shifty on 🍁

Im watching Gilmore girls whilst drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream, pretending it is not a hot balmy summers evening.

I always start watching Gilmore Girls in the last week of the summer holidays to get me ready for September, I’m excited already!

Anyone got any recs for films with gorgeous autumnal backdrops?

I always feel this is the arse end of summer- everything stinks (including me!), is rotting and dying. I can’t wait for the dignified decay of Autumn, wearing proper clothes as PP said, cooking and baking again. My garden is fucked, we need rain!

Literally can’t wait. I’ve been eaten alive my mosquitos and the itching is off the scale. Worse here than when I was on holiday. Poor dog is boiling. Hate this hot weather. Parched garden. Can’t wait for crunchy leaves, darker evenings, clothes that cover my mosquito bite covered legs.

I love Autumn, I have hated this summer. I have never had such bad climate anxiety as I have these last couple of months. But...I've just bought a watermelon, so I'm now a bit torn. Autumn will have to wait a day until I've eaten it.

I love this little corner of mumsnet! Cant wait to shut my front door and walk into warmth, lush hot dinners made in the slow cooker, fluffy socks and great tv 😊 🍂 🎃

Me too! I love the first sniff of Autumn when you can feel the season changing, it’s like something in the wind, a fresher breeze and the sun lower in the sky. Packing away Summer clothes and arranging a minimalistic wardrobe. Getting the slow cooker out and enjoying the comfort food recipes on cooking programmes.

I’d rather see ‘cosy’ any day than blasted ‘hygge’ which IMO was just a very clever marketing ploy to get us to buy even more candles and throws.

I’m really looking forward to the season of mists and mellow soupfulness*, not to mention rain, oh, please, 🙏.

*Multi (seasonal) veg soups are my signature dishes and they’re lovely and cheap to make, which is even better, since we could do with ‘going on frugals’ as my DM used to call it, for a while.

I’d forgotten about brushed cotton bedding! We used to always have it on the bed when I was little ( big old rickety house, damn cold in winter!, ice on the insides of the window!)
As I now live with DP and Ddog, and an electric blanket, I doubt if I need the extra warmth… but I am tempted. DP always moans about my lovely percale cotton bedding being cold even in this heat, so hmmmm?
At least we can cuddle together in the winter… he’s far too warm in the summer, as is the dog!
It got dark around 8.40 last night, and we had a sharp rain shower. It went cold! Oh the joy! I was under a pile of blankets, feeling very “October” 😀

‘hygge’ must have passed me by - I just had to google it and I see it’s a cosy synonym. How do you pronounce it?

I thought it might be related to ‘hug’ so looked it up in my colossal fat etymological dictionary, and sure enough, it would seem to be, via Old Norse courtesy of the Vikings.

Actually I just put a random episode on (it’s on Netflix) and it was lovely, autumn, lots of people walking around a small town, thriving independent shops, everyone was happy and industrious, it looked like a cross between a grown up Enid Blyton story and a bunch of people on happy pills 😂.

I shall definitely be watching it from the beginning.

Would recommend Sweet Magnolias on netflix for a cosy vibe (although its a bit religious, but i just ignore that)

Halloween, Bonfire Night, amazing leaf colours, mashed potato and gravy instead of salad, gorgeous boots and scarves, crisp frosts, the first Christmas song on the radio/ film on the tv/ holiday advert, seeing your breath, being able to nosey a split-second snapshot into people's living rooms because they've forgotten it's dark and they haven't closed the curtains, not to intrude but to share living in the same neighbourhood, prepping for Christmas, the temporary death of nature with the certain knowledge (for now at least!) that Nature will recharge rebirth and Spring will come again. Snow, closely watching the weather forecast to make sure you're prepared (this might just be those of us who live rurally). Knowing that no matter what is going on in your life, Mother Nature will keep on keeping on regardless.

Sorry, I got carried away and waxed enthusiastically lyrical there. Suffice to say - embrace every day and season, 'cos the alternative is a bit shit.

I follow this group on Facebook, beware if you're the type to get fomo though... I'm now an owner to the TKMaxx Martha Stewart ghost cushion after seeing someone's haul 🙈 it's not all about buying, it's decor ideas, nature... just all round Autumn vibe.

Also, I've just remembered, White Company 'Autumn' oil is an absolutely beautiful scent and it's my go-to Autumn scent 😍 sorry this is a bit consumerism(?) but thought I'd mention it!

I’ve had some really nice summer moments but autumn has my heart. Can’t wait for coats and boots and not having cooked skin and endless daylight.

What's everyone's favourite autumnal films? I always think of when Harry met Sally, dead poets society and of course spooky films....i love Halloween (the original), the craft, goosebumps....i have eclectic taste!
Also love the familiars and have a stash of spooky books lined up...might finally read the turn of the screw this year after loving the haunting of Blye Manor on Netflix.

I am normally such an autumn person; I find too much heat oppressive, and the summer holidays mean everywhere is too busy and there are annoying roadworks everywhere! I don’t know what’s happened to me this year; I just feel like the year has gone too fast, and I’m not remotely ready for summer to end yet! Maybe it’s because I’ve just turned 40, and because our lovely dog is 14 - she’s starting to struggle, and I think I know this is probably her last year with us. She still loves a paddle in the river, and lying in the garden snoozing in the sun, so I want her to be able to do that for as long as possible. But this thread is reminding me of all the things I usually love about autumn arriving; the beautiful colours, the cool, crisp air, the quietness & tranquility, the smoky smell, wearing soft snuggly jumpers & boots, the cosy candlelit evenings, and the good TV! Thanks everyone! 😊
